VERA KHLEBNIKOVA (RUSSIAN 1891-1941) Sun Bathing, 1920s oil on cardboard 40 x 51 cm (15 3/4 x 20 in.) [sight] signed lower left PROVENANCEAcquired by the previous owner from a private collection in Paris EXPERTISEA copy of a comparative artistic analysis provided by Maria Valyayeva, Moscow, 2008. (Copy available upon request). A Copy of a stylistic analysis report by Mikhail German, Saint Petersburg, 2012. (Copy available upon request) LOT NOTES The present lot is a very rare work by the artist Vera Khlebnikova, the younger sister of the leading Futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov. An exceptional painter, her works are delicate in character and composition, showing not only Fauvist influences but reminiscent of Vrubel and Nesterov as well. Khlebnikova's paintings come to market exceedingly rarely, the majority of them having been destroyed in a studio fire in 1930. Having began studying art at 14 in Kazan, she would later study in Kiev Moscow, and St. Petersburg, before coming to Paris in 1912, where she became the favorite student of Kes van Dongen at the Academie Witte. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work is appears in overall good condition. Some overall surface dirt. Notably bowing to the board apparent along the top. Vertical crack to the panel at the lower right, just below the nude woman's hand, 4 cm (1 5/8 in.) long. Small dent/scratch to her backside. Inspection under UV reveals no apparent signs of restoration or repairs. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Lot 64

Porzellan, farbiger Aufglasurdekor, Vergoldung. Modell 1113, Konisch. LiteraturVgl. Ponert, Kunstgewerbe I Keramik, Berlin 1985, Nr. 152.Model no. 1113. The well painted with a scene of Mount Vesuvius by night entitled “Eruption de Vesuve l'an 1779”. Blue sceptre mark with underglaze blue dash below, pressnummer 21. D 24.5 cm.Late 18th C.This rare and dramatic depiction was probably based on an engraving. The nocturnal volcanic eruption on 8th August 1779 was recorded in numerous prints based on eye witness accounts. The view is depicted seen from the harbour of Naples with the Lanterna del molo, the prominent lighthouse on Angioino Pier, on the left. The merchants on the harbour in the foreground and on the cargo barge are shown reacting surprisingly calmly to the scene. The eruption appears to have been viewed less as a threat and more as a spectacle. This plate almost certainly belonged to the series of similar pieces painted primarily with Neoclassical motifs now housed in the Belvedere in Charlottenburg. The pieces are thought to have originally been destined for the Russian court and were presumably also delivered there.ProvenanceCollection of Renate and Tono Dreßen.LiteratureCf. Ponert, Kunstgewerbe I Keramik, Berlin 1985, no. 152.

Lot 81

Porzellan, Goldfond, farbiger Aufglasurdekor. Blue sceptre mark, impressed sceptre mark and K.P.M., red imperial orb mark, blue mark I. Minor retouched wear to the gilding of the centre due to stacking. D 25.5 cm.1837 - 48.From 1837 onwards, King Friedrich Wilhelm III began presenting his godson Friedrich Franz (II.) von Mecklenburg-Schwerin with a set of six plates every Christmas. The resulting service grew considerably over the years until 1848 and eventually comprised 50 place settings. The pieces were decorated with views of Berlin and Potsdam, but also with reproductions of contemporary paintings, in this case the well-known oil painting by Louis Ammy Blanc, which exists in several versions. The first version was painted in 1834 and is now housed in the Landesgalerie Hannover whilst the second, dated version – painted in February 1837 – can be found in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn (inv. no. 67.268). The young lady in the painting can be identified as Gertraud Künzel, née Breitenbach, who was born in 1809 and died in 1834. She stands before a view of Cologne Cathedral, the unfinished state of which reflects her untimely death. Contemporary audiences were deeply touched by the work, and due to its popularity it was reproduced many times. Lempertz Berlin auctioned two other dessert plates from this rare and important service that were formerly housed in the Twinight Collection. These plates, painted with reproductions of works by Ludwig Heinrich Wittich, were sold on 7th November 2018 as lot 125.ProvenanceCollection of Renate and Tono Dreßen.LiteratureIllus. in cat. A RARE AND IMPORTANT ARCHAIC BRONZE SNAKE LAMP, WARRING STATES/EARLY WESTERN HAN DYNASTY, the sinuous snake gliding effortlessly up, his body bending six times as his wide jaws engulf one side of the three-lobed channelled oil tray with three prickets, all counterbalanced perfectly by his lower body loosely and naturalistically coiled along the ground forming the base, his lightly cast 'D' shaped scales expanding at the apex of the bend and shrinking on the opposite side, the overall surface covered in a green patina with light patches of malachite and cuprite encrustation. 52cm highProvenance:Sotheby's New York, March 31 - April 1, 2005, Lot 162 Gallery J J Lally, New York Note:Cast in the form of a snake, the simple design of this lamp suggests that it may have been influenced by the art of the Chu State. Snake form lamps are exceptionally rare; one other known example is a Zhou dynasty bronze ornament in the shape of a coiled snake in the Musee Guimet, Paris and illustrated in Alain Thote's 'Aspects of the Serpent on Eastern Zhou Bronzes and Lacquerware', Colloquies on Art and Archaeolgoy in Asian, no 15: The Problem and Meaning in Early Chinese Ritual Bronzes, London 1990, p152, pl 3. Far more common for the Han Dynasty were goose foot lamps; examples of which can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Shanghai Museum, China. Here, the body of the snake bends six times as it winds upwards, its jaws engulfing one side of the three-lobed channelled oil tray, whilst its tail coils at the base in perfect counterbalance. The body has lightly cast 'D' shaped scales; the surface covered in a green patina with patches of malachite and cuprite encrustation. The Bronze Age of China began in 1700 BC and declined after the Han Dynasty (206BC - 220AD). During the Han Dynasty lamps became the main source of lighting and an important household item. Lamps also provided light for the soul's path to the afterlife and most lamps in existence today have been excavated from tombs. The dating of this lot is consistent with the results of the thermoluminescence test, Oxford Authentication, Ltd, no. C204c75.
