Ca.500 BC. Rare bottle created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique. This example of Gnathian ware, however, displays no figural work but rather a fine-line netted pattern embellishes the rounded body in white pigment added to the black-slipped ground after firing. In addition, the painter took a generally highly ornamental approach to the neck and lower body i.e. the white horizontal bands as well as a wide red horizontal band adorning the shoulder leading to a series of white vertical bands that are capped by more white horizontal bands as well as the white and red bands wrapping the lower body. The form is just as elegant, boasting a stunning silhouette with a globular body, a neck that narrows gracefully to a wide rimmed spout, all upon a raised narrow foot. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skilful technique and an overall polychromatic effect characteristic of Gnathia. A Rare and Important Melon-Form Silver Handled Jar and Cover, Tang Dynasty (618-907)Raised on a short splayed foot, the eight-lobed globular body decorated with engraved panels including birds, deer, tiger and ram amongst blossom and foliage, all on a ring-punched stippled ground, the shoulder surmounted by a pair of recumbent mythical bixie beasts supporting a tapering D-section swing handle, the cover double-domed and rising to a tear-shaped finial.Height 17.3 cm Provenance: An old Scottish Estate, acquired prior to 1980 [Notes: This silver jar is an example of the fine craftsmanship and sumptuous tastes of the Tang Court. Despite China’s strong history of using silver in ornaments and smaller vessels, it was not until the 6th Century that this material was considered one of the premier luxury materials. The vessel was analysed at Oxford University and determined to be of very high fineness (99.7%), comparable with other Tang silver. Its design is unique in both its shape and decoration. The lobed form and depiction of fantastic beasts was introduced through trade along the Silk Road. Despite being used as Chinese decorative motifs since the Bronze Age, the two mythical bixie on the shoulders are also influenced by creatures from Central Asia. Assuming the form of a single-horn winged lion, these animals are known to ward off evil and bring wealth in the form of gold and silver coins to their owners. With its large size and attractive workmanship, this vessel would have been a prized possession within the Tang upper-class. The presence of a cover is quite remarkable, the double-dome and finial of which are reminiscent of a Buddhist stupa, offering up the possibility that this vessel was used for religious ceremonies in a high-ranking temple. For a similar container of this shape, see Carol Michaelson, Gilded Dragons, Buried Treasures from China’s Golden Ages, London, 1999, Fig. 82, a handled jar and cover at the Shaanxi History Museum. Both have similar rounded forms, swivel handles supported in the mouths of mythical beasts, and engraved depictions of animals and foliage, the latter lacking the lobed body of this specimen; an eight-lobed parcel-gilt silver and gold box sold through Sotheby’s London, 27 November 1973, lot 30, and another example published in Eskenazi’s Early Chinese Metalwork in Gold and Silver; Works of Art of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, London, 2011, page 33; the bold four-square stature of the deer can be compared to that of a repoussé standing rhinoceros on a silver dish sold at Sotheby’s London Masterpieces of Chinese Precious Metalwork, 14 May 2008, lot 59; and the large lush foliage can be compared to similar designs on a silver bowl and a bowl and cover that were sold in ibid., lots 53 and 64. The last three examples were all featured in Bo Gyllensvärd, Chinese Gold and Silver in the Carl Kempe Collection, Stockholm, 1953.]

Christabel Pankhurst RARE hand written 6 page letter 31st July 1911 on Womans Social and Political Union letterhead to MP Noel Buxton regarding a Womans Suffrage Bill being a rival to the Circulation Bill and a speech. Noel Buxton. British Conservative politician who served in various Cabinet posts in the Conservative and National governments of the 1920s and 1930s. He was Secretary of State for Air during most of the 1920s. As Secretary of State for India in the early 1930s, he authored the Government of India Act 1935, which granted provincial-level self-government to India. Dame Christabel Harriette Pankhurst, DBE, was a British suffragette born in Manchester, England. A co-founder of the Women's Social and Political Union, she directed its militant actions from exile in France from 1912 to 1913. In 1914 she supported the war against Germany. CHRISTABEL PANKHURST'S BATTLE FOR FEMALE SUFFRAGE COMES TO A HEAD: Christabel was at this time running the Women's Social and Political Union, while her mother Emmeline spent most of her time campaigning in the provinces. Our letter was written by Christabel to the editor of the leading Liberal newspaper after Asquith's victory in the 1910 general election. The Irish Women's Franchise League had been founded in 1908 and was the most outspoken and public manifestation of women's discontent and radical feminism in Ireland; its primary aim being to secure women's suffrage within Home Rule. In 1910 a Conciliation Bill - whereby votes would be granted to around a million women - had been introduced to Parliament but had failed. Another was debated in May 1911. This had been passed by a majority of 255 to 88 votes as a private member's bill, and was promised a week of government time: 'Christabel, although full of doubts that Prime Minister Asquith would ever grant votes to women, nevertheless hoped that a settlement could be reached by peaceful means, since she believed that mild militancy was played out. The suspension of militancy, announced at the end of January, remained in force until 21 November 1911, apart from one week during 1910. When Asquith stated on 7 November 1911 that the government would introduce next session a Manhood Suffrage Bill that could be amended to include women, Christabel denounced his scheme as disreputable, and appealed for one thousand women to march to Westminster two weeks later. While the demonstration was taking place, however, a smaller group armed with bags of stones and hammers broke windows of government offices and businesses. Convinced that the government would not concede women's suffrage until they were forced to do so, the WSPU engaged in further window breaking, this time on a mass scale, in early March 1912; the policy had been jointly agreed by Christabel, her mother, and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence. On 5 March, the police rushed to Clement's Inn with a warrant for the arrest of the leaders. Christabel, however, now lived in a flat nearby. Warned of what was happening, and fearful that the movement would collapse if all the leaders were in prison, she fled to France where a political offender was not liable to extradition' (June Purvis, ODNB).
