Captain Hiram Clift of Mystic (Connecticut) 1803-74, an exceptionally rare 19th century documentary scrimshaw sperm whale tooth, 7 1/4" long, decorated by Clift to commemorate the release of himself and his ship 'Hudson' following their arrest by the British in the Falkland Islands in February 1854; Clift had been hunting whales in the Falklands periodically since 1849. His arrest in 1854, ostensibly for poaching pigs on the islands, led to a military confrontation between the British and USS Germantown, which forced his release. The incident was discussed both in Parliament and Congress. Clift was a skilled scrimshander. Works by his hand held in the Mystic Seaport Museum include well crafted jagging wheels, a signed engraved coconut cup and a whale tooth finely worked to represent the USS President engaging HMS Endymion. The coconut cup and the whale tooth display the same motifs rendered in the same style as seen on the scrimshaw offered here; provenance- offered as a gift to an East Anglian family in the 1950's and in that ownership until it passed to the present vendor about 2 years ago.
