LOUIS XI: (1423-1483) Louis the Prudent. King of France 1461-83. A rare L.S., Loys, one page, oblong 8vo, Montils-lez-Tours, on the 5th day of January [n.y.], to `Dear and Beloved Cousin, Count of Comminges, Marshal of France´, in old French. Written in the hand of the clerk, the King offers his help, troops and military weapons to his correspondent, stating `Monsr le mareschal pour ce que aurez besoing d'artillerie et que Jay entendu quil en y a a lyon, Jescriz a ceulx de la ville, quilz facent ce que leur ordonnerez, et me semble que devez faire fondre celle quilz ont faite et en faire faire des pieces quil vous semblera qui vous seront necessaires pour mener avecques vous´ ("Monsieur the Marshal, for what you will need of artillery and having been told that there is artillery available in Lyon, I write to those of the city in order that they do what you will order them. And it seems to me that you must melt down the ones they have made and make them in pieces as you think you will need them to carry with you") Countersigned at the base by Tillhard. A very slightly light signature although perfectly legible and visible by the King. Addressed to the verso. Overall age wear, small staining and slightly trimmed right and bottom edges, with a very small repair to the left edge, otherwise G The castle at Plessis-lez-Tours, near Tours, also known before as Montils-les-Tours, was the Royal residence of three Kings of France, Louis XI, Charles VIII and Louis XII.  It was the first building in bricks and stone in the Loire and was initiated by Charles VII and Louis XI, the last bought the estate of Montils in 1463 and finished the building of the castle, making it the Royal residence of the King of France. A small cottage next to the castle gave shelter to Francis of Paula (1416-1507), an Italian mendicant friar and founder of the Roman Catholic Order of Minims. Francis of Paula was never ordained a priest. He died and is buried at Montils-lez-Tours  Jean de Lescun d´Armagnac (? - 1473) Count of Comminges, known as the Bastard of Armagnac. Appointed marshal of France in 1461, the year Louis XI ascended to throne. The historically important ordinance of Montils-lès-Tours, well-remembered for the reformation of custom, was promulgated by Charles VII (1403-1461), the father and predecessor of Louis XI, in April 1453. It was an ordinance which defined the jurisdictional competences of the Parliament of Paris, the extent of the Royal domain, the rights relating to Royalty, to Peers of France, to prelates, etc.. It is especially important in the history of law because the King requests the writing down of customs, which till then were almost an exclusive matter of private law.

‘I have sworn a great oath never to use or countenance the use of the name “Lawrence”, as referring to me, again, in public or private’ LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British army officer, archaeologist, diplomat and writer, renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-18) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-18) against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. An excellent A.L.S., T E Shaw, one page, folio, Karachi, India, 5th January 1927, to an unidentified correspondent (although evidently a writer whom Lawrence held in some esteem). Lawrence announces, 'I have sworn a great oath never to use or countenance the use of the name “Lawrence”, as referring to me, again, in public or private', continuing 'So that would settle the question of my introducing your book, I'm afraid' and explaining 'Of course I write, or rather I try to write, occasionally: unsigned articles, or articles signed by virgin names. They are worth two guineas a thousand words, which I am told is a better rate than usual. They cost me more than that, in trouble, even at my R.A.F. rate of 3/6 a day! And no publisher would be moved to publish your work, because it had an unknown man's introduction before it.' Shaw, however, offers his advice and a further clarification of his decision to his correspondent, 'But why should you think an introduction necessary?......Probably the right man will take what you have written on its merits, and that should be much more gratifying than to be helped. I did twice, in the old days, help people by introducing their books: but one, Richard Garnett, was dead, and that pardoned the offence. The other, Doughty, was a special case: I had been trying to persuade all London to reprint him, and at last one beginning-publisher said “I will, if you'll preface it” :- and what could I do? Doughty was very nice about it: but it felt like scratching one's name on Westminster Abbey. Introductions to publishers I will (and do) willingly give. Several people with good stuff have been helped by me into print. It's a matter of knowing the proper tradesmen. Have you tried Cape? He is enterprising, and the best producer of commercial books in London (for format). If you will send me a sample of your stuff I'll see that it reaches his reader (Edward Garnett, a critic of genius) with my opinion. I have no doubt that it's the right stuff: and it should be exactly right for the particular public. If Cape says “NO”, I'd suggest Faber and Gwyer for second string: but Cape an easy first. Secker is too difficult: and the big men too staid'. A rare letter of fine content in which Lawrence affirms his desire for anonymity and proves himself to be a good guide in the intricacies behind the scenes of publishing. Some very light creasing and a few minor tape stains to the lower central area of the letter, only very minimally affecting a few words of text and part of the signature, otherwise about VGFollowing his legendary exploits in Arabia, Lawrence had become a household name by the early 1920s and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in August 1922 as an aircraftman under the name John Hume Ross. However, less than a year later, his identity was exposed, and he was forced out of the RAF in February 1923. Changing his name once again, to T. E. Shaw, he repeatedly petitioned to re-join the RAF and was finally readmitted in August 1925. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom was published in December 1926 and the renewed publicity it brought resulted in his assignment to bases as Karachi, from where the present letter was written, and Miramshah in British India, where he remained until the end of 1928. Herbert Jonathan Cape (1879-1960) British publisher who founded the London publishing house of Jonathan Cape in 1921, remaining at the head of the firm until 1960. Cape established a reputation for high quality design and production and published a range of English-language authors including Robert Frost, Ian Fleming, James Joyce and T. E. Lawrence.Edward Garnett (1868-1937) English writer, critic and literary editor who was instrumental in the publication of D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. Edward Garnett was the son of Richard Garnett (1895-1906) English scholar, librarian, biographer and poet, who is also referenced in the present letter.

Je vous l'enverrais de suite si je n'imaginais que peut-etre n'aimeriez-vous pas qu'elle courut les champs a votre adresse' (Translation: 'I find at hand this drug that I copied for you [most likely the recipe for a medication] I would send it to you immediately if I did not imagine that perhaps you would not like it to run the fields to your address'), concluding by exclaiming 'Sargat Junior. Votre Mar.[seillaise?] vous attend. Si vous la voulez, venez la chercher. Il est bien rare que je sorte avant midi, ou une heure' (Translation: 'Sargat Junior. Your Mar.[seillaise?] is waiting for you. If you want it, come get it. It is very rare that I go out before noon, or one o'clock'). HASENCLEVER WALTER: (1890-1940) German Expressionist poet and playwright. A rare A.L.S., Walter Hasenclever, one page, oblong 8vo, Clamart, 14th December 1925, to 'Mon cher confrere', in French. Hasenclever explains that it was only today that he had had an opportunity to read his correspondent's kind letter, continuing to remark 'Le grand malheur est que je n'ai precisement aucune maxime de vie. Car, si j'ai avais une, je serais oblige de me suicider, persuade, que la vie entiere ne suffirait pas a la realiser' (Translation: 'The great misfortune is that I have precisely no maxim of life. Because, if I had one, I would be obliged to commit suicide, persuaded, that the whole life would not be enough to realise it'). Annotated at the head of the page in the hand of the recipient, 'Maximes de vie des ecrivains contemporains du monde entier' (Translation: 'Life maxims of contemporary writers around the world'). Autographs of Hasenclever are rare as a result of his untimely death, by suicide, at the age of 49. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGHasenclever's books were banned and burned by the National Socialists after they took power in Germany in 1933. The author went into exile in Nice and during World War II he was imprisoned twice as a 'foreign enemy' in France. When France fell to Germany he was in the Camp des Milles prisoner camp and on 22nd June 1940 took his own life with a barbiturate overdose so as not to fall into the hands of the Nazis.

(AGW=0.2355 oz.)Composition: 917.0/1000 Gold. The CoinDescribed as “impressive and very elusive” in the Bentley Collection, the 1853 proof sovereign is a wonder of British numismatics. It was originally issued both in sets and singly either for or on behalf of the Royal family through the Court Jeweller “Hunt and Roskell”. The 1853 proof sets are the rarest ever produced by the Mint in all of British pre-decimal coinage. It is quite possible that these sets, with their altered initials, were issued in memoriam of their late designer, the great William Wyon (1795-51).Described conservatively as R3 by Wilson and Rasmussen and later more accurately as R4 by Marsh, the 1853 proof sovereign is very rarely offered and extremely sought after. So rare is this popular issue that no example was included in the extensive Slaney Collection, so praised for its near exhaustive completeness. The coin itself is extremely attractive, featuring a full cameo very rarely seen on other examples. The fields are flashy and unworn perfectly showing the surface texture of the polished dies. Moving the coin around in one’s hand the dark and deeply mirrored surfaces jump to life and glow with a new shade of gold at every angle, while the satiny devices shimmer with a controlled and delicate lustre. The true beauty and rich contrast of a cameo proof is on full display in this so skilfully struck example. No graded example with an Ultra or Deep Cameo designation has been offered publicly in recent history. There are no serious marks or distractions to the design, only light chatter as indicated by the grade. This is a premium example of a legendary proof issue.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. No other fees, including live bidding. (AGW=0.1155 oz.)Composition: 916.0/1000 Gold. The CoinThis is an extremely rare pattern issue by the great Richard Yeo in his prime. Only five examples, including this one, have traded publicly in the last two decades. This particularly delicate and well-proportioned bust exists on no other issue. This is also the joint finest graded example of this unique bust. The svelte slopes of neck, cheek and shoulder are so perfectly and subtly engraved, giving the impression of freshly pressed snow. A velvet lustre shimmers and dances over each curve breathing life into the regnal depiction. Flipping the coin over, a bold and precisely engraved royal shield meets the eye. This contrast perfectly complements each side of the coin, accenting both the softness of royal flesh and the cold strength of aristocracy. All of this boldly stands out against beautifully reflective fields of a subtle olive tone that under direct light erupts into a blazing yellow. Truly a world class example, having graced the Dangar Collection, Slaney Collection and British Collection. Befitting only of the cream of numismatic collectors. Richard Yeo (c.1720-79)Richard Yeo first came to prominence in 1746 upon his creation of the official medal for the Battle of Culloden. From 1749, he was assistant engraver at the Royal Mint under the great John Sigmund Tanner. In 1775, Yeo officially succeeded Tanner as Chief Engraver at the mint. However, as a result of Tanner’s failing eyesight and other health issues Yeo had been acting effectively as Chief Engraver since 1760 but without the appropriate pay. This was amended in 1768 when he was awarded £500 for past labours. Tanner designed and engraved British coinage as Chief until his death in 1779. Yeo was an extremely accomplished engraver producing several patterns and circulation issues throughout his career and his particularly fine style brought a delicate realism to coins of the period.Yeo was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1761-91) and founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his works at the Academy in both 1769 and 1770. The Slaney CollectionThis coin was a member of the prestigious Slaney Collection – one of the most revered collections of British coinage ever assembled. For decades collectors had wondered where the cream of the numismatic crop liquidated in the 40s and 50s had disappeared to, only to find most of it in the Slaney Collection, which was sold by SPINK in two sales in May 2003 and May 2015. The collection sold for over £4 million; broke numerous sale records; is considered a milestone in British coinage; and ushered in a new era of serious growth in the market. A choice example, with a good strike, minimal wear and considerable lustre. Very rare in this condition. NGC Census in this grade: 4.NGC Census in higher grade: 5Total NGC Census: 29Reference: Bull-660; Fr-349; KM-587; MCE-365; S-3685Diameter: approx. 21 mm.Weight: 4.12 g. (AGW=0.1237 oz.)Composition: 916.0/1000 Gold.Edge: MilledDesigner/engraver: John Croker (1670-1741)The CoinThe half guineas of George II are a series plagued with surface issues, with a large number of examples having been found in water and exhibiting related surface problems. This coin features no such issues and with just a handful of examples graded higher (undoubtedly including resubmissions) this is one of the best examples of the issue available to collectors. The coin has beautiful surfaces that glint and glimmer with a subtle, swirling lustre - extremely rare on these issues. The strike is good for the issue and Croker’s strong and characterful design exists here proudly. A world-class example of a problematic series.John Croker (1670-1741)Johann Croker, who later anglicised his name to John, was born in Dresden, Saxony in 1690. As a child, Croker lost his father, an accomplished cabinet maker, and was then taken under the wing of his goldsmith and jeweller godfather. The budding artist flourished under this apprenticeship and upon its completion made his way to England, via the Netherlands, where he worked as a jeweller and medallist until becoming an assistant to Henry Harris, Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, in 1697 – not long after a not-yet-knighted Isaac Newton joined the mint as Warden. In 1705, the same year Mr Newton became Sir Isaac, Croker was appointed as Chief Engraver. Croker, working closely with Newton, engraved nearly all dies of Queen Anne, King George I, and many of George II. Few engravers have left as great an impact on British coinage as John Croker. In 1729, a 24-year-old John Sigmund Tanner (1705-75) was appointed his assistant. With Croker’s death in 1741, Tanner carried on the torch of Chief Engraver.PLEASE NOTE: 6% Buyer Premium + VAT on this lot. No other fees, including live bidding. Lot 159

Marion Adnams, British 1898-1995 - La Ronde, 1963; oil on board, signed lower left 'Marion Adnams' and inscribed with title, date and artist's address on the reverse of the frame, 76 x 101.8 cm (ARR) Note: this enigmatic, large work focuses on anthropomorphised trees, a subject that the artist would return to throughout her career. In her earlier works, such as 'L'infante égarée', 1944 (Manchester Art Gallery) and 'Medusa Grown Old', 1947 (Rediscovering Art by Women Collection), these would serve as a backdrop to her figures, their winding forms and shadows creating an additional tension to the work. Here, however, these leafless trees or perhaps vines become the subject themselves, twisting like ancient figures in an expansive landscape. Standing in a ring, one coloured deep red, they become evocative of an ancient ritual. Similar works by the artist, 'For lo, winter is past', 1963 and 'A Time to Be Born and a Time to Die', 1965 can be found in Derby Museums, near where the artist lived. The artist stopped painting in the late 1960s due to her deteriorating eyesight, sadly shortening her career as she was making some of her most important works and making her intricate works quite rare. Marion Adnams was a highly significant British artist associated with Surrealism and had her first solo show at Jack Bilbo's celebrated Modern Art Gallery, London, in 1944. Artists including Emmy Bridgewater and Max Ernst were also exhibited at the gallery during this period. Recently her work was included in the Dulwich Picture Gallery show 'British Surrealism' in 2020 alongside Ithell Colquhoun and Leonora Carrington, and a solo show at Derby Museum in 2017-18.
