Lot 99

Ca. 900–1100 AD. Viking Age. A rare cross axe head with a triangular rounded blade, a round socket with rectangular flanges above and below, and a and long rectangular poll. The blade is only partially solid: the openwork design features s a cross inscribed in a rectangle. Research indicates that such axes were robust enough for practical use. However, it is more likely that they were reserved for ceremonial purposes. Cross axes belong to the later Viking period. Though the Christianisation of the Vikings marks the end of the Viking Age, the introduction of Christianity to Scandinavia progressed slowly since the 8th century AD, and the Viking art forms reflect the process in a gradual inclusion of Christian motifs through these centuries (Graham-Campbell 2013, 10). Therefore, we find several examples of syncretism between Christian and Norse symbols in Viking Art (see Graham-Campbell 2013, 178–186). The owners of these cross axes were not necessarily Christian, but the axes reflect the strong Christian currents that existed in this part of the Viking period. To find out more about the Vikings and their art, see Graham–Campbell, J. (2013). Viking Art. London: Thames and Hudson Ltd. For a similar cross axe head from Ludvigshare, Denmark, now in the National Museum of Denmark see https://en.natmus.dk/historical-knowledge/denmark/prehistoric-period-until-1050-ad/the-viking-age/weapons/axes/ Provenance: Private UK collection; Formerly acquired on the European art market from pre-2000 collections. Size: L:180mm / W:125mm ; 600g

Lot 3

Ca. 202 BC–220 AD. Han Dynasty. A hollow-formed terracotta cream-coloured rhinoceros shown standing four-square with a well-cast head with two horns of different length, rose-coloured ears pricked back, small eyes, overlapping muzzle sensitively cast along the upper edges of the mouth with folds in the skin, which can also be seen in the skin of the neck. Excessive hunting led to the near extinction of the rhinoceros in Han-dynasty China, occasioning their importation from southeast Asia. The anatomical accuracy of the present example indicates that the artist must have modelled his work after a living animal. Very rare. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. The TL certificate with its full report will accompany this lot. Provenance: From the private collection of a Somerset gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s on the UK /European art markets. Size: L:280mm / W:590mm ; 8kg

Lot 68

Ca. 202 BC–220 AD. Han dynasty. A beautiful and rare Chinese Han dynasty pottery duck with bronze legs. The duck is standing on its detailed bronze legs which support a globular, squat body and a short neck terminating in a red coloured head with a light-coloured beak and open, attentive eyes. The body is decorated with brownish and green glaze, imitating the animal's plumage. The Han Dynasty, which ruled between 202 BC-220 AD, brought great prosperity and stability to China, reigning over a golden age of classical Chinese civilisation during which China saw major advances including the widespread development of a monetary economy and the invention of paper, as well as much progress in the decorative arts. To find out more about the Han Dynasty and its art production, see Milleker, Elizabeth J. (ed.) (2000). The Year One: Art of the Ancient World East and West. Exhibition catalogue. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art. Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong. Size: L:130mm / W:135mm ; 430g

Lot 119

Ca. 1000–650 AD. Western Asiatic, Urartu. A rare, intact bronze belt made of a wide lateral bronze band embellished with geometric, floral decoration as well as depictions of animals all over. The borders are decorated with circles. These wide bands are joined by a thin band of bronze at the back and a closure at the front fashioned in the shape of two interlaced snakeheads with incised decoration. Bronze belts first appeared in the 2nd millennium BC in Urartu, one of the ancient metalworking centres of the ancient world. From Iran, representations of belts in art are known from two regions: Susiana, Elam, and their adjacent districts, on the one hand, and north-eastern Iran on the other. (Neo-)Elamite belts are characterised by being narrower than their predecessors and sometimes decorated with a zigzag pattern or rosettes. For more information on ancient belts, see Moorey, P. R. S. (1967). Some Ancient Metal Belts. Their Antecedents and Relatives. Iran 5, pp. 83ff. & Calmeyer, P. in Reallexikon der Assyriologie III, 1957-71, pp. 689-93. Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York Size: L:385mm / W:98mm ; 380g
