His family continued the business and the last of the Wombwell menagaries closed in 1884. Cf. Lot 597

RARE STAFFORDSHIRE 'DANDY-HORSE' & 'ACCELERATOR' CANARY YELLOW PRINTED JUG, c.1820, foliate painted neck above titled scenes 'A Visit From Richmond to Carlton House' depicting a lady and gentleman riding a dandy-horse and 'The Lady's Accelerator' depicting a lady driving a Pilentum or accelerator (horseless buggy), pink lustre rim, 13.5 cms h. Provenance: Private collection (West Wales) Auctioneer's Note: For camparisons, see Bonhams 10.8.07 lot 115 and Pitt Rivers Museum no. 1897.69.8 for similaryly printed nursery plates. Alison Petch writes: The image on the plate refers to George Augustus Frederick of Hanover, (1762-1830), known as the Prince Regent and later George IV, whose residence was Carlton House until 1820 when he ascended the throne. He is the best known resident in the house and the timescale fits (dandy horses were popular just before 1820 when he was Prince Regent and still resident in Carlton House). The Prince Regent was probably the ultimate dandy of the time. Carlton House was an opulent residence, which could be called a palace when the Price Regent was living there so lavish was its decoration. The house was demolished in 1825 and replaced by Carlton House Terrace. The reference to Richmond refers to Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756-1837). She was married to the future George IV in 1785 (her third marriage), but this marriage was considered invalid under the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 because it had not been approved by George III, his father. In any case, it would not have been possible to marry as she was a Roman Catholic. The relationship lasted until 1811. Maria Fitzherbert was known as the Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill. The jug is therefore a light-hearted political commentary about the scandal of their marriage and on-going relationship. The dandy horse may have been specifically chosen, not only to link George IV and Maria Fitzherbert on the same machine, but also because its name was synonymous with the high living of the early nineteenth century, which the Prince Regent epitomised. Comments: small chip to side of spout, hairline to neck beside handle, lustre slightly worn, some scattered enamel chips.

THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE RUSSIAN ORDER OF ST ANNE MEDAL OF DISTINCTION FOR FOREIGNERS TO SKIPPER DIXON RNR 1914/15 Star correctly impressed - W.S.A. 1777 A.W. Dixon SKR. .R.N.R.Condition = GVF Russian Order of St Anne, Medal of Distinction for Foreigners in gold. 1911 Pattern, enamel, and hallmarked '56' gold. Made in Edouard, St. Petersburg by Varvara Dietwald of Edouard. Engraved ' Imperial Russian Order of St Anne, conferred by the Czar on the most honored A. W. Dixon Skpr R.N.R 1915' Condition - near mint, the enamel is perfect. The pair and Mercantile Marine Medal are not present with the group; the family believe the recipient lost them while out on the town. Alfred William Dixon was born in Hull, Yorkshire, on 24th March 1883. Alfred spent his working life at sea; on 29th May 1903, he was granted a certificate of competency as a Second Mate of a foreign going ship. Dixon was granted his Masters rating on 31st Amy 1907. On 18th May 1915, Dixon joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a Skipper. He commanded the Hull-based trawler 'St CYR' In Spring 1915, the Germans tasked the Minelayer Meteor to undertake a mine laying operation in the White Sea. The aim was to stop incoming supplies to the Russian Army and exports to the allies. The Royal Navy responded by sending Minesweeping trawlers to remove them, ' St CYR' was among the group of 8 trawlers. Dixon's service papers note he was ' Awarded Medal of Distinction of the Order of St Anne of Russia' It is highly likely that he was awarded this for Operations in the White Sea. Sadly his service papers are very faint in some areas. They show Dixon was arrested in July 1916 for improperly leaving his ship unanchored. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was deprived of 20 days pay. Dixon was invalided out of the RNR in November 1916 due to being physically unfit. He did carry on working at sea, serving with the Mercantile Marine in the 1920s. Alfred died on the 12th of January 1939; at the time, he was on board SS Surreybrook of Fowey Harbour Cornwall. On the 5th May 1922, he shared Naval prize money with a Russian ships Captain, which may relate to his war service in the White Sea.

1998 Ford Scorpio Ultima 24V Auto EstateMake: Ford Model: Scorpio Ultima 24V Estate Year: 1998Mileage: 168074VIN: WF0NXXGAGNWY11249Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: R162PRETransmission: automatic In 24-valve Ultima form, this Scorpio was at the top of Ford's executive tree in 1998. The Ultima trim level was the highest one available, with a CD autochanger, climate control, leather seats, walnut veneer dash, cruise control, an automatically dimming mirror and electrically-operated seats as well as a variety of other enhancements over lesser models. The top-of-the-range Cosworth V6 engine gave 207bhp. With most of these flagship models being saloons, estates were comparatively rare. Rather fittingly, given that the Scorpio Ultima 24V could probably be regarded as the Rolls-Royce of Ford's line-up, this 1998 example was initially sold to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Crewe. The V5C is present, showing six former owners. Also in the paperwork file is the original document folder with owner's manual, engine immobilisation guide, audio instructions and service booklet, showing 14 stamps up to March 2011, at 123,358 miles. The MoT is valid until April 2022, and the certificate is included. There are past test certificates from 2016, 2017 and 2019. A check on the online MoT history for this Ford confirms the current recorded mileage of 168,075, in conjunction with the service history. A stack of invoices covers work done to the car up to 2016, including an automatic gearbox rebuild during that year at a cost of £2346 and a new radiator in 2016, at a cost of £387.60. A new battery was fitted in January 2019. The vendor describes the car as 'driving lovely and used daily', and it presents well, inside and out, in its smart metallic maroon shade. Some spares are included.

This car also has a brand new mohair hood, which was only fitted in October. The car comes with its V5C (recording five former registered keepers), its current MoT (valid until the end of October 2022) and two keys. The locking wheel nut tool is also included. The odometer reads circa 81,236 miles. In April 2018, the vehicle was recorded as a Category N insurance loss - no structural damage and repairable but insurer decided not to repair. 2003 Mazda MX-5 1.8iMake: Mazda Model: MX-5Year: 2003Mileage: 42000VIN: JMZNB18P200312993Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: VE53ZDDTransmission: manualThis Mazda MX-5, registered in November 2003, is in the rare colour of Splash Green and has been in the custodianship of a lady owner since 2015. However, advancing years have made it difficult to enter and exit, so it has been replaced by a more practical but less exciting Mazda 3. The car has covered just over 42,000 miles from new. The paperwork folder includes a selection of invoices and MoTs (from 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006) which help confirm the low mileage. Recent work includes a replacement rear brake caliper in June 2021 (£258.32). The car's MoT is valid until June 2022. The service book is stamped up to June 2021 at 42,173 miles, and the owner's manual is included. The V5C records two registered former owners from new and comes with a spare key and book pack. The vendor reports that the fabric roof is in excellent condition and there are no leaks apparent. The original tonneau cover is with the car, as is a cover for the hardtop to protect it when off the car. We are told that the car 'performs very well and is an absolute joy to drive'. The overall condition, inside and out, is very presentable, although there is some touch-up paint noticeable on the rear bumper. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 2ND NOVEMBER BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

Three former keepers are noted on the V5C. There is little other paperwork to accompany the car, with its last MoT expiring in January 2020. Aside from some minor bodywork blemishes, the car is in good condition, with a very tidy interior. Very rare and collectable scratch edition. A rare, right-hand drive manual car. This Audi was retained by the first owner from 1973 until 2005 and acquired by our vendor in 2007. Three owners from new. Comes with MoT history dating from 2007 until 2016 when last issued, a few receipts and several DVLA notices. The mileage is recorded at 69,695. 1967 Mercedes Benz 250 SE Auto CabrioletMake: MercedesModel: 250 SE Cabriolet Year: 1967Mileage: 89000VIN: 11102322087114Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: NRK881ETransmission: automatic Just 954 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE Cabriolets were built between 1965 and 1967, so even in their native Germany, they were rare machines. Here, they were even scarcer - it's believed that just 26 came to the UK in right-hand drive form. This is one of those cars, registered in January 1967. After its initial owner, the following one kept it from February 1969 until 2021 - the sales invoice to her being present in the paperwork. £7000 has recently been spent on recommissioning, including £149 on a fuel sender unit, £1330 on a stainless steel exhaust, £611 on a fuel injection pump, and £2400 on labour. The new parts fitted are detailed in an invoice. Included in the well-organised history folder is the current V5C, original green logbook, and Mercedes-Benz handbook and other booklets, including the bonus of a commercially-produced hardback work on the W110, W111 and W112 models. The MoT certificates include the current one, which expires in August 2022, as well as previous ones from 1990 and 2001. A handful of invoices from the 1980s to 2001 show that the transmission was reconditioned in 2001 at 88,638 miles, at a cost of £1030.92. One interesting curio in the file is an unstamped and unused fuel rationing coupon booklet dating from the 1973 fuel crisis. A tonneau cover is also present, as is the spare wheel, battery charger, a jack and a wheel brace. Externally, the car is in very good condition, with a clean, well-fitting hood and tidy chrome (save for some lifting on the top of the radiator grille, around the badge mount). The inside is generally well-preserved but there is damage to the wood on the dash-top - a common problem on these cars caused by sunlight through the windscreen - and a missing carpet in the driver's footwell. The leather seats show some patination commensurate with the car's age. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 20TH OCTOBER BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1956 Bentley S1 Hooper BodyMake: Bentley Model: S1 Hooper BodyYear: 1956Mileage: 83104VIN: B214ANConfiguration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: PSK886Transmission: automatic While most Bentley S-Series (and their Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud siblings) were built with Standard Steel bodies (effectively the 'factory' body), that the cars continued to use separate chassis construction meant that coachbuilders could still practise their art on them. Although Hooper was owned by Daimler, it still created elegant (and sometimes very flamboyant) designs for the chassis of other manufacturers, including Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Many of these had a distinctive frontal appearance with hooded headlamps, as is apparent with this very stylish ivory and black 1956 Bentley S1, built to Hooper design number 8430. It seems that just 39 cars to this particular pattern were constructed, with aluminium alloy panelling. So this was a very rare vehicle even when new, and much more so now. The vendor tells us that one of the previous owners (the V5C records three former keepers), a retired bank manager, cherished this Bentley throughout his 30-year custodianship of it. It is described as running well, although our examination of it reveals that it may benefit from some cosmetic attention in places. These include the roof, where there are some scratches and a little bit of bubbling and 'orange peel' texture to paint, and the rear wings, where the paint has cracked along the swage line. There are also a few age marks on the nose. The interior is very presentable, with sumptuous cream leather, an immaculate beige headlining and good wood. The mileage is recorded as 83,104 miles. The history file is very extensive, with a lot of correspondence from the mid to late 1990s when the car was in the process of being renovated. However, there are also copies of build specifications and diagrams from the 1950s, as well as many receipts (from the 1990s to the last decade), MoTs from 1996 to 2012 (when the last one was issued), tax discs and the original handbook. 1965 Fiat 1500 C LHDMake: FiatModel: 1500cYear: 1965Mileage: 65000VIN: 568349Configuration: Left Hand DriveRegistration: HKH813CTransmission: ManualAfter being stored for 20 years in the previous owner's garage, which helped guarantee its survival in good mechanical order, this rare example of Pininfarina's attractively angular small Fiat saloon of the 1960s was taken on by the vendor seven years ago, who tells us it was then restored over a number of years with parts sourced from across Europe. It has been British-registered since 2019. The odometer currently shows around 65,000km, but this is unwarranted. Included in the paperwork folder are a great many invoices for recent work running into the several hundreds. There's also the French FFVE document showing the transfer of the vehicle to the vendor, as well as a 1962 spare parts catalogue and the current V5C. 1994 Rover Maestro 1.3 ClubmanMake: RoverModel: Maestro ClubmanYear: 1994Mileage: 49097VIN: SAXXCHWA1AM710950Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: M939MDATransmission: manualIntroduced in 1982 as a replacement for both the Morris Marina and Austin Allegro, the Maestro remained in production until 1994. In its final year, just 4000 were built, making this late example quite a rare machine. This white 1.3 Clubman example is fitted with the venerable and robust 1275cc A-Series engine, developing 68bhp. Supplied new by Rover Central Garages in Torbay, the V5C records this car as having had four previous keepers. The expiry date for the MoT is May 2022, and the odometer records 49,097 miles covered. The history folder includes original owner's books in their Rover wallet. The service book is stamped up until 34,033 miles in 2004, but there is a handwritten note attesting to an owner service at 48,721 miles during July 2021. The oil was changed and a new distributor cap, thermostat and spark plugs were fitted, while the cooling system was flushed and refilled with Comma G48 coolant. There are also MoT certificates from 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2019, and a few older bills. A spare key is also included. This Maestro is very well-preserved and, aside from some scratches on the front valance, some marks on the grey fabric upholstery and areas of loose headlining, is in very tidy condition overall. Even the digital clock is working. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 7TH OCTOBER BY ACA OF THIS CAR.

1996 Toyota Starlet 1.3 Glanza V Turbo EP91Make: Toyota Model: Starlet Glanza V Turbo Year: 1996Mileage: 119243VIN: EP910164429Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: P539GPFTransmission: manualThe Glanza was the sporty variant of the final generation of the small Toyota Starlet. The S version was powered by a naturally-aspirated 1331cc engine, while the Glanza V featured the same motor albeit turbocharged. In the S, it generated 84bhp, but with the V - as here - turbocharging pushed the total up to 138bhp which, in such a lightweight machine, gave impressive performance. The Glanza was only officially available on the Japanese market, although some used private imports have made their way to the UK, such as this one. Registered in August 1996, we are advised by the vendor that it's a recent JDM (Japanese domestic market) import, which has just been given a new MoT with no advisories. The ticket is valid until October 2022. He also tells us that it 'drives superbly well' and is 'incredibly rare in such standard original form, with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) exhaust, intercooler, air box, stereo, CD changer, rear speakers, wind deflectors and JDM parking stick'. The odometer reads 119,243, which equates to 74,526 miles. There is little history; the paperwork folder consisting of the current V5C, 2020 and 2021 MoTs and numberplate authorisation certificate dated November 2020, from shortly after its import. Overall, this Toyota is in very good order, with just a few blemishes in its metallic black paintwork and few signs of wear to its blue interior.
