DIM. 94 X 122,5 CM (37 X 48.2 in.) This student of both the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and painter Félix Barrias represents one of the rare female Orientalist painters. She started her carrier painting scenes of European life, but today is better known for her Orientalist works that capture, with great tenderness, the daily life in North Africa. She became a member of both the Colonial Society of French Artists and the Salon of the Society of French Orientalist painters. Her works, along with other painters, also served as illustrations along the packaging of the famous biscuit company LU. Her celebrated painting Tahadat et Khadija (former collection of LU) was used as a publicity poster. Our important painting presents us with a meeting of two very different people; a young black man richly dressed visits with an older wise man. The old man - scribe, well known writer, or religious scholar - sits writing, visibly concentrated in his work. Books and an ink well rest upon a thick mat where he also sits. The interior is bare, yet it has an emanating light that appears almost supernatural. The entire atmosphere is impregnated with the wisdom and peace of this old man. The young boss, who appears seemingly impatient, carries a bitter expression. On his right hand he wears a gold bracelet, a symbol of a man used to giving orders. As a sign of respect, he has removed his shoes. The entire scene appears tainted in blue. Marie Lucas-Robiquet’s paints with small brushstrokes, using a reduced palette of enormous sensitivity. Here, nothing is violent; the old man fills this space with mysticism.
Barbados 1938-47 set, 15 values (without 1d red, which does not exist) mint with gum, some values with ageing due to local storage. Each with the local ‘SPECIMEN’ handstamp (Bayley Type BAR 4, 17 x 2.5mm) in violet. BPA Certificate (2001). A very rare set, 6 of each originally existing. Bayley S231-4, 234-44, 245
Barbados 1938-42 ½d green and 1d red, perf 13¼ x 13. Fine used coil-join strips of 4, cancelled with Circulation Branch CDSs of 14 OC 41. The cancels fit together so these must have been adjacent on a cover. The top 1d shows the master Die flaw and faint re-entering of R11/5, helping to authenticate the strips. A very rare pair which we first handled years ago; we do not know of any others. SG 248, 249/CW 1, 3
Bermuda 1921 Second Tercentenary 6d, fine used showing ‘C’ omitted from watermark; the adjoining ‘A’ just overlaps the edge of the stamp. There is a minor water-stain coincident with the area of the variety, which is a shame with such a rare item (which is unpriced used). SG 72a (£1200 mint)
Ceylon Revenues. 1938 Die Proof of the 500r frame, initialled AER and dated 17/3/38 in pencil; marked ‘approved’ and further dated 17/3 in ink, numbered ‘C210’ at base. (The Die Proof ex the Crown Agents illustrated in Eric Yendall’s book is numbered C211.) Clean apart from hingemarks on the reverse, a rare and desirable proof
Lagos 1904 10/- green and brown, watermark Crown CA, used with part of the scarce (J)ebu O(de) CDS Proud D3. No question of authenticity here; Jebu Ode (or Ijebu Ode) was under Lagos administration until April 1906) but there is a greasemark (?) at top which may be treatable. A rare stamp properly used. SG 53 (£900)
Somalia 1948 Refugee Post cover to Modena, 16 FE 48 CDS and three cachets on front. Vendor states; ‘In 1948 during the January riots against the Italians living in the city/country, an emergency ‘Free mail’ was set up and officially granted the victims of the riots one free letter to send to relatives reporting that they were in good health etc. The triangular cachet was made out of ivory by a member of the refugee camp emergency council’. These covers, with the correct cachet and SERVICES DES POSTES cachet are rare these days, this cover being the latest one of the three that I have recorded.’ An interesting item
