A rare print and paint decorated early Tunbridge ware whitewood child's sewing pannier, probably Thomas Wise, the canted sides painted with flowers, the pin hinge lid with a central print titled to the interior 'New Assembly Rooms, Leamington Spa' within a floral border and outer black line hatched border, the swing handle painted with stylised green leaves, compartmentalised pink paper interior, 12 x 8.5 x 10cm max. This box appears for the first time to establish a link between the Tunbridge manufacturers and the Spa town of Leamington Spa.The image depicted is the Lower Assembly Rooms (later called the Parthenon), Bath Street, opened in 1821. The portico was removed in 1853, the building burnt down in the 1960's and was re-built c1970. The original architect was Samuel Beazley (1786-1851), a leading theatre architect and established London architect. No other Tunbridge box with a Leamington scene has previously been recorded, although pieces for Cheltenham and Oxford have. It is possible that this could have been a box later embellished with the print, but this seems highly unlikely as the image fits the lid and border well and the border detailing is typical of other Tunbridge pieces.I am grateful to Rob Gill of Gosford Books, Coventry for his assistance in identifying the image.

A rare copy of the First Edition Beano Annual published before the appearance of Dennis The Menace, the 1940 Beano book was issued around the outbreak of World War Two in 1939, it came a year after the weekly comic was first brought out by Dundee based D.C. Thompson in July 1938. The annual was published in relatively small numbers and it is extremely difficult to find a better copy than this one (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The overall condition of this annual is very good. The cover is bright, clean and unmarked which is partly due to the fact the vendor, who was the original owner, cover it in brown paper when he first got it. The corners are slightly bumped and there is a very small rip +/- 1 cm to the leading edge of the front cover and a 2 cm surface rip to the spine on the front cover. On the back cover there are brown marks to the bookends and the pages are browned commensurate with age. On the frontispiece the box that says “This book belongs to” has been filled in in pencil and opposite is the price of 2s 6d also in pencil. On page 25 there is a slight stain +/- 5 cm in length but this is light and in the margin (not covering text or picture). There is a similar mark on page 31, stain mark roughly the size of a thumb on page 34 reflected on page 35, on pages 66 and 67 there are slight stains some of which are on the text but the text is still clearly visible. On page 81 there are two tears at the bottom right hand corner both of +/- 5 cm, a slight stain on page 97 and small black fingerprint (not on text). The binding is tight and some of these marks may be able to be cleaned off. Overall we consider this book to be in very good condition. A similar copy was sold last year and this is definitely in better condition.

WW2 German KIA Luftwaffe collection. Fine set of 16 documents and two decorations for Wachtmeister Helmut Benecker, of 2 Fernaufklarungsgeschwader 101. He joined Luftwaffe in 1937 and serve with flak units until 1942 March, when he entered pilot training. Decorated with EK1 and 2, Frontfluspange bronze and silver. He was killed in a flying accident in August 1944. Documents includes, His Wehrpass with lots of entries for flying kit etc, Arbeitsbuch, Ahnenpass, EK1 and 2 citations. Award document for Tatigkeitsabzeichen der Flakartillerie, Award document for Flugzeugffuhrerabzeichen, Reischsportabzeichen award document, super studio photo of Benecke and several other documents relating to his academic and civilian life. Original Flugzeugffuhrerabzeichen silver medal, rare item and a cloth version of the pilots badge unworn, grey oilcloth backing. All original items scarce collection. Good condition Est.
