A rare Dinky Toys Avro Vulcan Delta Wing Bomber (749) one of only 500 produced in 1955-56. Based on the series 1 Vulcan with the strait wing leading edges (series 2 were curved). This example is Dinkys second version with clipped wings as the metal was notoriously difficult to reach the wing tips in the original moulds. Finished in its original silver livery with RAF roundels and tail markings. Complete with undercarriage. VGC-Mint (as produced). Signs of factory repair to one wing tip and casting flaws to the underside of the wings, evidence of how difficult it was to produce these rare toys. Plate. See back cover
Autograph – Art and Architecture – Robert and James Adam document signed by both being a lease to Peter Day carpenter for a piece of land on the north side of Devonshire Street lying between ground let to Stephen Morris and William Adam. Document on vellum incorporating a diagram of the plot of land soiled to outer but clean inside. Signatures of Robert and James Adam the celebrated architects of the mid to late 18th c are rare.
Scotland – the Highlands roads fine als of Lord Macdonald dated April 28th 1809 concerning the building of various roads in the Highlands as well as the ferry landing stage for the Island of Skye : ‘Respecting the improvements suggested by Mr Telford and communicated to you by Mr Hope I am certainly of the opinion that whatever has the effect to open the communications with the continent must be of especially advantage to Skye – I am therefore most willing to pay my share of the expense of making a landing place in Ardavasor Bay as also of the road leading to it...’ Telford launched his ambitious plan to transform totally the communication network in the Highlands in 1801. The project was to take 20 years to complete. Letters of this nature relating to Telford’s work in the Highlands are rare.
Ephemera – broadsides two rare broadsides advertising Hen Aston Barker’s panorama which was set up in Leicester Square in 1817. The first advertises the panoramic view of the Battle of Waterloo and the second the view of St Petersburgh Russia. Original folds and a little creased but otherwise fresh images. Barker’s panorama was one of the wonders of London and ran for a considerable time. The Panorama was housed in a special spherical building and Ruskin said it was ‘...and educational institution of the highest and purest value...’
Autograph - Music – Ivor Novello three typewritten documents signed dated May 31st 1934 and December 23rd 1935 being the lease documents for the rooms on the third floor of Aldwych Chambers Aldwych London where Novello lived and wrote some of his most famous theatrical productions. Rare. Documents of this nature rarely appear on the market.
Dorset – antique map – miniature map of the county by Van Langeren/Jenner c1643 or later showing the whole of the county with principle towns marked outline colour and a large distance grid and list of towns villages etc. A very pleasing and rare miniature map which was the first to feature distance tables. Approx 7x5.5 ins.
Theatre – Gilbert and Sullivan – The Sorcerer a fine example of the famous poster by Brock advertising the D’Oyly Carte Production of The Sorcerer – a much lesser known G&S operetta. This again was produced for the first runs of the operetta and reissued in later years – a rare piece of G&S memorabilia.
Miscellaneous good group of miscellaneous documents ephemera etc including two very attractive bills issued by Trouncer & son brewers with engraved vignettes an early 18th c tax assessment with window tax listed a decorative advert for Rudge Cycles a printed notice issued by the Leominster Canal Company (rare) dated 1772 a share certificate for the Bishop’s Castle Gas Light and Coke Co a printed booklet on the history of the Bishop’s Castle Railway a small group of almanacks. A county cycling map of Surrey (c1930s) and a few other items.
Autographs – Circus a fine album compiled by Lionel Baker of Pontypridd S Wales who ran away to be with the circus in the early 1930s comprising photographs of the various performers in Bertram Mills Circus many of them signed including stilt walkers clowns animal act performers human cannon ball etc. A rare album showing one of the leading British circuses in the heyday of the genre before WWII.
Ireland – the great potato famine fine ms letter dated New York July 1st 1847 addressed to the Central Relief Committee of the Society of Friends in Dublin confirming the shipment of corn meal by order of the Relief Committee of Louisville Kentucky ‘for the relief of the distressed poor in Ireland...’ Rare.
WWII – an extremely rare copy of the ‘Deutsche Inzelzeitung’ – or the Jersey Evening Post – for November 2nd 1940 with front page entirely in German and with the remaining three pages in English. A historic newspaper. When the German’s took over the Channel Isles they renamed the local paper in Jersey and ordered that the front page should be published in German for the benefit of the occupying troops. However in the following year the paper re-assumed its English identity as the Jersey Evening Post and was published entirely in English. Original copies of this remarkable newspaper are extremely rare on the market.
WWII – Nazi sticker book Manner im Dritten Reich 1934. Sticker book profiling all the leading members of the Nazi party at the beginning of Hitler’s tyranny – many of whom he had assassinated before the outbreak of WWII. In fine condition and with a pack of unused stickers. Rare. It is most uncommon to find one of these books with packs of unused stickers. Each one has a colour portrait illustration of one of the Nazi members.
WWII – German soldier’s photo album containing a variety of original snapshots including scenes of fleet refugees Jewish prisoners scenes of destruction dead bodies (possibly executed) the destruction of Warsaw and scenes inside the Warsaw Ghetto. Albums of this nature are rare. The Warsaw Ghetto has long been established as one of the most horrifying aspects of the Nazi holocaust regime and the images in this album underline the cruelty and barbarity which was meted out to innocent Jews in Poland’s capital city.
American Fascists Look to Germany the Heart of Europe by Stanley McClatchie from the USA 1st edition 1937 published by Heinrich Hoffman pictorial boards and a large qty of photographic illustrations to accompany the English text extolling the virtues of Hitler and the Nazis. Extremely rare. “Look to Germany” was written in 1936 by American Stanley McClatchie who had lived in Germany prior to the NSDAP’s ascent to power in 1933 & was impressed by the industrial technical & social revolution under the Nazis. He knew that his book would be seen as Nazi propaganda & it certainly was. To this day the book is considered to be too dangerous to be read in Germany & other European countries. Nearly all copies were destroyed by the Allies thus it became generally unavailable. Original examples are very scarce.
WWII – Nazi poster – occupation of the Channel Isles poster carrying the ominous message : ‘Any persons found marking walls with ‘V’ signs or insults against the German Armed Forces are liable to be shot. A reward will be paid to any persons giving information that will lead to the arrest of these offenders. G V Schmettow General German Military Government. Printed on white card slight browning in places approx 10x8 ins. Rare.
WWII excessively rare handbill given out to the exhausted and defeated people in Berlin in the very last days of WWII with the legend on the obverse ‘Die Russen sind in Berlin. Wofur kampft ihr weiter ? [trans] ‘The Russians are in Berlin- shall we continue the fighting ?’ Printed on a buff coloured piece of paper oblong 8vo.
WWII – naval original signal log received by HMS Warspite during the period Friday/Saturday March 28th/29th 1941 cyclostyled on 15 leaves foolscap rectos only. This provides primary source information on the activities of the Royal Navy during the Battle of Matapan and is a fascinating insight into WWII naval operations. Matapan is the southernmost cape of the mainland of Greece and the log reports on a number of encounters with the Italian navy including the sinking of an Italian Cruiser : ‘...1st two broadsides hit causing orange flashes and denser volumes of smoke from below bridge structure - remaining broadsides were difficult to spot owing to smoke. When she turned away there was a first amidships still burning. Judging by the number of splashes short 6 inch probably straddled...’ During the battle the British fleet under Admiral Cunningham sank and entire Italian squadron. Documents of this nature are rare on the market.
Art and Artists – autograph – Sir Philip Burne Jones series of original sketches by Burne-Jones in a group of autograph letters signed to his uncle (by marriage) the equally famous artist Sir Edward Poynter together with the Sotheby sales catalogue of April 24th 1918 in which Poynter’s art collection was sold with ms annotations almost certainly in the hand of Burne-Jones a further catalogue by Christies of the sale of works by Poynter again annotated in ms and probably in the hand of Burne-Jones – also an autograph letter signed by Charlotte Knollys to Poynter thanking him on behalf of Queen Alexandra for explaining his exhibition to the Queen. The sketches in the style of cartoons include representations of Burne-Jones himself and offer a rare opportunity to obtain original work by one of the leading Pre-Raphaelite artists.
WWII – The Holocaust The Kitchener Camp Review for April 1939 being the journals of the Kitchener Camp for Refugees at Richborough near Sandwich written for and by them. Cyclostyled on 11pp folio with orange paper printed cover this was issue number 2 of a rare and legendary magazine produced for the thousands of mainly Jewish refugees who were coming to Britain in the wake of the Nazi purges at the start of what was to become the holocaust. The Camp was designed for 3500 but by the end of the war more than 15000 male Jewish refugees were housed there. The Journals were produced on a monthly basis and are one of the most poignant reminders of what happened to these people and of the warm welcome which they received from the British people.
WWII – a good example of an RAF Sector Clock which is apparently in working order and which conforms to the type manufactured by F W Elliott during 1939 with mechanical movement and made to what was described as ‘pre-war spit and polish’ standard with a mahogany surround in a nature finish and with a polished brass bezel. A later version came in 1941 and had a darker varnished finish with a matt black bezel. The face of the clock is divided into the 24 hours of the day with sectors in differing colours for ease of recognition. At the centre of the face is the RAF emblem. Overall diameter is approx 17ins. Face has been scratched in places no doubt through constant use but otherwise this is a fine example of an increasingly rare piece of RAF memorabilia.
WWII – Operation Bernhard an excessively rare example of a fake British £20 note produced by the Germans as part of the notorious ‘Operation Bernhard’ – the attempt by the Nazis to flood the British economy with fake money in order to bring the country to its knees. The money was made under force labour conditions by Jews in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. The Nazis had 100 agents who attempted to put the fake money into circulation. The total produced amounted to more than £134million. The operation proved a failure as British intelligence got to hear of the idea as early as 1939 and steps were taken to identify and stop the circulation of the money. Remarkably of the almost 9 million notes actually produced the Bank of England only records one as having been paid out. Ironically for the Germans the possession of this money became a major factor in identifying German agents – leading to many successful arrests. Examples of these banknotes are now considered excessively rare. The operation was halted by the German High Command in early 1945 – with the majority of them believed to have been consigned to the bottom of Lake Toplitz in Austria. Divers rescued some examples from the lake and they continued to turn up in circulation – with the result that the Bank of England withdrew all notes with a value of larger than £5 from circulation and it was not until the 1970s that notes with the denomination of £20 started appearing again !
WWII – Adolf Hitler – Mein Kampf a fine copy of the special edition of Mein Kampf issued to celebrate Hitler’s 50th birthday in 1939. Bound in blue leather with gilt title and sword device to top cover. Slight blemishes to spine but interior contents fine. Title page bears the indication that this was the anniversary edition. A rare and highly sought after edition of Mein Kampf. Copies of this particular edition are extremely rare on the market mainly because few in Germany could afford such a sumptuously produced version of the book – and also by that time the majority of the population already had one of the many editions which had been produced since 1925.
WWII – Adolf Hitler Mein Kampf pocket edition 1940 signed by Adolf Hitler to inside cover on a page bearing the embossed Nazi eagle and swastika devices. Black cloth boards with Nazi eagle and swastika device in embossed metal to front cover in ‘as used’ condition. Excessively rare. Copies of Hitler’s book signed by him rarely appear on the market. The last to appear in these rooms – a pre-publication second edition of 1925 bearing a lengthy inscription signed by Hitler to one of his fellow inmates in Landsberg Prison where he wrote the book – sold for £18000. This is a later edition. Hitler’s signature in black ink is bold and clear. We are informed by the vendor that the signature was obtained by his grandfather who was a radio operator for the German army in Norway. He also lived in Nuremberg and he is believed to have obtained the signature personally from Hitler in that city.
WWII – Adolf Hitler – Mein Kampf two volumes in one – being the second edition of the first part and first edition of the second part. This is a pre-publication copy of the 1926 edition. Bound in red cloth gilt title slight blemish to top of spine upper hinge slightly weak but otherwise appears unblemished. On the inside front cover there is an autograph inscription signed by Hitler to Emil Danneberg : ‘...in memory of our shared imprisonment Adolf Hitler Munich 20 December 1925.’ This is one of the rarest books obtainable on the market. Hitler was imprisoned in Landsberg gaol in 1923 after his infamous ‘Munich bierkeller putsch’ – his attempt to overthrow the Government by armed insurrection. He spent two years in prison and during time wrote the first part of Mein Kampf [My Struggle]. This appeared in 1925 as an edition of 500 copies only. It was reasonably successful and this (plus Hitler’s intense personal impetus) led him to write a second part which appeared with the first part in 1926. The present volume bearing Hitler’s personal date of December 20th 1925 is therefore one of a few pre-publication copies which were supplied to him as author for distribution to relatives friends political colleagues etc. Very few of these copies ever appear on the market. We have seen only one other copy which sold in these rooms in August 2009 (lot 320). The dedication on that copy was dated ‘Christmas Day 1925’ in Hitler’s hand and the recipient was a Johann Maurer. In that inscription Hitler as here indicated that Maurer shared Hitler’s imprisonment in Landsberg though the wording was slightly different : ‘In memory of our time together in prison in Landsberg’. In the case of Maurer there is scant information on him though he was believed to have been an early official of the Nazi Party. In the same respect information on Danneberg the dedicate of this volume is scant – though clearly from the dedication in Hitler’s hand he was in Landsberg during Hitler’s imprisonment there. Danneberg is not listed as a co-conspirator in the Bierkeller Putsch and it has been speculated that he might have been a prison guard. This seems highly unlikely given the wording of the dedication, It is much more likely that Danneberg was a fellow inmate – either because of his political activities or simply because he was a common criminal. However whatever his status in Landsberg he clearly earned enough respect from Hitler to be given one of these exceptionally rare copies of Mein Kampf and to receive the personal autograph dedication of Adolf Hitler.
