AUTOGRAPH LETTER to 'Cher Monsieur', SIGNED. Paris, 1 April 1910, 3pp., ink on paper, some tears and folds, 12mo. Et l'on m'a dit aussi que je n'étais pas de notre siècle'...The letter is signed Henri Rousseau, artist-painter Rue Perrel 2 Bis.Le Rêve was painted in 1910, the woman depicted is inspired by Yadwgha, a Polish woman the artist was in love with. When Rousseau painted this canvas, Freud was working on the dream. It was on a sofa similar to that of the Douanier Rousseau that the psychoanalytic sessions were held. Is Douanier Rousseau at the origin of psychoanalysis without knowing it? The surrealists would answer positively. We attach an autograph note by the janitor of the rue Perrel after the death of the Douanier Rousseau on September 2, 1910, the year of his famous painting, Le Rêve'H. Rousseau est décédé insolvable à l'Hôpital Necker il n'a même pas laissé de quoi payer les frais des obsèques'.« Le Rêve » is exhibited at the MoMA, New York.Footnotes:ProvenanceCollection particulière, France. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

She was employed by all the leading late 18th Century architects. From about 1777 she began her engraved designs, which were published in 1784 in a catalogue of over 700 items entitled A Descriptive Catalogue of Coade’s Artificial Stone Manufactory. Then in 1799, the year she entered into partnership with her cousin John Sealy, she issued a handbook of her Pedlar’s Lane exhibition Gallery. The firm became Coade and Sealey from this date and following Sealey’s death in 1813, it reverted to Coade and in 1821 with the death of the younger Eleanor Coade, control of the firm passed to William Croggan, who died in 1835, following bankruptcy. Coade’s manufactures resembling a fine-grained natural stone, have always been famed for their durablity.Great Saxham Hall in Suffolk was rebuilt following a fire  in the Palladian style  by the architect Joseph Patience, a student of Sir John Soane and was finished in 1798. An extremely rare Coalbrookdale Osmunda fern pattern cast iron seatcirca 1870fully stamped Coalbrookdale and with diamond registration stamps, registration number and pattern No 57194cm longSee engravingIn 1708 Abraham Darby took over a blast furnace in Coalbrookdale and established perhaps the most famous of names associated with cast iron, the “wonder material” of the 19th Century, namely the Coalbrookdale foundry. The company was responsible for producing the ironwork that made the famous iron bridge across the river  in 1779, the first of its type in the world and which has subsequently been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.In the Mid 19th Century the company decided to add decorative castings to their range of products and the new seats, urns, fountains and ornamental gates won great praise as well as several medals at the Great Exhibiton of 1851. The company employed leading designers of the day such as John Bell and Christopher Dresser. The largely naturalistic seats for which the firms name became synonymous were so popular that production lasted into the 20th Century and even today the designs seem as fresh as when first produced. The design was registered and patented by Coalbrookdale at The Public Record Office on 29th May 1873, and is listed as number 57 in their 1875 Castings Catalogue, Section III, page 261. Due to the omplexity of the casting very few of these seats were ever produced as compared to the more common fern and blackberry pattern seats. The Victorians had a great passion for ferns and this passion was expressed, among other ways, through the production of a wide range of 'ferny' decorative objects made in pottery, glass, metals, textiles, wood, printed paper, stone and other materials.Although the main period of popularity of ferns as a decorative motif extended from the 1850s until the 1890s, the interest in ferns had really begun in the late 1830s when the British countryside attracted increasing numbers of amateur and professional botanists (male and female). By 1855, Charles Kingsley had recognised the prevalent passion for ferns as a phenomenon and in the course of encouraging the study of natural history in his book 'Glaucus', coined the term 'Pteridomania', meaning 'Fern Madness' or 'Fern Craze'. Garden ornamentGarden bench
