A Fine & Rare 17th Century Twelve Branch Chandelier. The scrolling candle branches set in two graduated tiers of six and connected to the ball knopped stem with tenons & mortises numbered by a series of corresponding dots and secured by turned pins. The candle sockets having screw threads fastening the drip trays. Terminating with a large pendant globe with knopped finial and measuring 38 ins (97 cms) in height, 32 ins (82 cms) in width.
A Rare 17th Century Oak & Yew Wood Cross-banded Escritoire Cupboard on Stand. The deeply moulded cornice above two cupboard doors; opening to reveal a single shelf interior. The escritoire fall front enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon holes and small drawers surrounding a smaller cupboard door. The stand having two short and one long drawer divided by mouldings above an arched apron front & sides defined by a cock-beaded edge. The six S-form legs joined by curved stretchers and terminating on compressed bun feet. 74½ ins (190 cms) in height, 43 ins (109 cms) in width, 16¾ ins (43 cms) in depth.
A Rare 16th Century Oak & Elm Dovetail Jointed Coffer. The lid having a double moulded edge. The front board divided by chip carving into two panels; each centred by a wrythen whorl radiating fanned flutes contained in a roundel with conforming quadrant decoration to the corners and a gouged border of repeated lunettes. The two panels separated by a spiky palm rising beneath an iron lock-plate with zigzag staples. The applied base rail moulded with horizontal grooves and having a scalloped edge. Standing on V-cut end boards, 32 ins (81 cms) high, 55 ins (140 cms) wide, 19¾ ins (50 cms) deep.
A Rare & Unusual Late 17th Century Lancashire Armchair of joined construction. The shaped top rail having a domed centre above an open back with an ornamental silhouette cut projection rising from the base rail flanked by silhouette cut side splats. The plain uprights surmounted by pyramidal finials. The scroll end arms resting on turned posts leading down to a generous planked seat on turned front legs and rear stiles united by peripheral stretchers.
A Rare Double-sided Westmorland Joined Oak Court Cupboard believed to have been taken from a cottage in the Lake District village of Kirby Stephen where it had been built into the wall and served as a room divide. The `parlour` side having a moulded cornice above a frieze of carved S-scrolls centred by marriage initials GB and date 1723, with turned pendant finials overhanging either side. The recessed upper cupboard with horizontal fielded panel doors flanking a vertical fielded centre panel. The base section housing three drawers with applied edge moulding above two large panelled doors flanking a panelled centre. The plainer `kitchen` side having an offset door accessing the upper cupboard above two drawers and a panelled facade composed of ten panels set in two rows of five within a groove-moulded framework, 74 ins (188 cms) high, 67 ins (170 cms) wide, 27½ ins (70 cms) deep.
A Rare 17th Century Carved Joined Oak Chair. The foliate lunette carved top rail above a demi-panel back with arched underedge, ornamented with two tulip heads issuing bold stylized foliage enriched with incised & nail punched details. The plank seat above finely turned ball & reel legs and front stretcher.
A Rare & Important 16th Century Carved Gothic Oak Bed, now lacking canopy and having later top rails and finials, but with original side rails. The head board composed of six panels; the upper three richly carved with entwined stems of flowers and foliage within chip-carved borders, divided by moulded muntins ornamented with repeated flowers head and diaper work stiles. The foot board ornately decorated with intricate chip-carved ripple moulding and having turned finials surmounting the carved & canted posts. (Note: English beds of this age are extremely rare and this is a good example showing fine carving).
A Rare 16th Century Oak Buffet. The planked top having an applied moulded edge above a cupboard door ornamented with scrolling iron hinges and centred by a raised horizontal diamond moulding. The flanking panels similarly applied with vertical diamonds above a single long drawer. The lower shelf having a panelled back and fronted by two long tapered columns with raised rings. Standing on block feet 53½ ins (136 cms) in height, 35 ins (89 cms) in width, 18 ins (46 cms) in depth.
A Fine & Rare Late Elizabethan Oak Buffet of small proportions. The two plank top having a run-moulded front edge and a carved frieze enriched with foliate sprays between the initials R WA S; defined against a recessed punch-work matted ground and branded EG above a scalloped apron forming a downswept pinnacle at the centre. The middle shelf having a guilloche carved frieze and conforming central pinnacle, the lower shelf on nulled rails. Each tier joined by two silhouette cut tapered columns highlighted with fluting; one branded with the initials WB. Standing on compressed block feet. 43 ins (110 cms) in height, 35 ins (89 cms) in width, 18 ins (46 cms) depth. The Exchequer, Five Pounds, 29 July 1697, bearing interest of a Farthing a day, signature of Sir Robert Howard, auditor of the Exchequer. Cancelled with inked X across middle, tiny hole at upper left, short tear in bottom edge, a couple of ink splashes and many endorsements on back, otherwise very fine, rare Interest-bearing Exchequer notes were introduced in 1696, two years after the opening of the Bank of England
A good rare ukelele banjo by Richard Shellard, the fingerboard decorated with mother of pearl, the body and neck inlaid with geometric banding. The head with a mother of pearl tablet with the name of Des Philp, for whom this ukelele banjo was made. Original case. NB: Richard Shellard was a known violin maker and was encouraged by The George Formby Society to make a few select ukelele banjoes. (See illustration)
