A Louis Vuitton cabin trunk 1920s, covered in the famous LV monogrammed fabric with remnants of original travel labels including Cunard White Star, with `LV` tooled leather edging, wooden lid banding, and brass corners, catches and lock, the fabric lined interior with Louis Vuitton branded webbing inside the lid and original orange & gilt paper label, no. `792218`, lacks inner tray, complete with the rare and original canvas and leather outer case, the sides with stencilled lettering, `RWH`, 32 x 18.5 x 14in. (81 x 47 x 35.5cm.) * This trunk was originally owned by Robert Hathaway, second husband of Dame Sibyl Hathaway, and was probably purchased in New York. The sides of the outer case bear his initials, `R.W.H.`.

Crinitus (Petrus) De honesta disciplina 1508 title printed in red and black and with large woodcut printer`s device woodcut initials early ink marginalia throughout and an 8pp. index in the same hand at end a few worm holes throughout turning into a large trace on last 6 ff. of text affecting a few letters on most ff. but with no loss of sense 19th century half calf rubbed and soiled [Adams C2949; Renouard Ascensius II 350-351] small folio [Paris] [Josse Badius & [for] Jean Petit] 1508. ***Rare. We can trace no copy of this edition at auction in the last 25 years. De honesta disciplina is considered to be a source for the works of Nostradamus..
Wine.- Mousin (Jean) Pandora Bacchica 1614 translated by Charles Cachet title with small woodcut ornament some light browning contemporary polished calf spine in compartments and richly gilt spine ends a little chipped and rubbed lower corners worn rubbed [Simon BG 277; Vicaire 611] 12mo Toul Sebastian Philippe 1614. ***A very good copy of the rare Latin translation of Discours de l`Yvresse also published by Philippe at Toul in 1612. We have only been able to trace one other copy at auction (Sotheby`s 17th June 1999). The work is divided into 67 chapters and provides much information on the wines table manners banquets and feasts of earlier generations. It also discusses drunkenness; it`s effects and ways of curing oneself of it. .
Coffee & Tea.- Aignan (Francois) 1696 first edition errata at end contemporary speckled calf spine in compartments and richly gilt joints splitting head of spine chipped stained Paris chez Laurent D`Houry 1696. ***Rare. We can trace only one other copy at auction (The John Lyle Collection at these rooms 5th June 2003). With chapters on Arabic and French coffee French tea and fermentation and with references to quinine Lullus and Arnaldus de Villanova. Aignan cultivated barley and rye in Brittany which he roasted to produce a "French coffee"; a cheaper alternative to arabica beans. He also produced a natural remedy tea made from dried balm leaves..
Norfolk.- Edward I (King of England D. manuscript in Latin on vellum in a fine charter hand with an illuminated 2-line initial "E" for Edwardus and witnessed by Gilbert de Clare earl of Gloucester Anthony Bek Archdeacon of Durham Hugh son of Otto [?de Grandson] and 2 others 12 lines docketed on verso by Peter Le Neve with his initials "PL" also 2 medieval dockets initial "E" with slight surface wear of gold a few small holes repaired folds slightly creased and yellowed but in remarkably good condition lacks seal 150 x 244mm. Shuldham [Shouldham] 18th January 1281. ***Royal charters of this nature are exceedingly rare. Written the year before Edward I commenced his war in Wales. Gilbert de Clare [called Gilbert the Red] (1243-95) earl of Gloucester and of Hereford; one of the largest landowners in England and one of the most important political factors in the de Montfortian wars of the 1260s first aiding de Montfort in his subjection of Henry III and then helping to overthrow de Montfort by aiding the Lord Edward Henry`s son. Truculent self interested and wayward de Clare was nevertheless a firm friend and political ally of Edward I and would have been much in evidence at court "Between January 1278 and May 1286 he [de Clare] witnessed more royal charters than any of his rank except the earl of Lincoln." - Oxford DNB. Anthony Bek (1) (c. 1245-1311) Archdeacon and later Bishop of Durham; royal official and diplomatist; personal friend of Edward I who helped him raise finance for both his Welsh Scottish and French wars. In 1281 Bek was "warned by Archbishop Pecham of Canterbury that unless he obtained a papal dispensation he would never be considered for a bishopric." Peter Le Neve (1661-1729) herald and antiquary; most of his manuscript collection were of Norfolk and Suffolk. North Creake north west Norfolk 3 miles south east of Burnham Market..
Two rare Watcombe Pottery Boat Race terracotta jugs, designed by Dr Christopher Dresser, printed and enamelled with the two teams racing, before a stylised bridge, fish below, in colours printed marks, chips 22.5 cm. high Literature Michael Whiteway Christopher Dresser 1824-1904, Skira, page 75 catalogue number 43 for a comparable example.
A rare Böttger porcelain fluted bowl and cover, Dutch-decorated in the famille rose palette with three Chinese figures beneath willow and flowering prunus, the cover moulded with fourteen impressions containing flower motifs, the underside painted with a peony, c.1720, slight chipping to the cover`s flange, 16cm. (2) Cf. Ingelore Menzhausen, Early Meissen Porcelain in Dresden, pl.31 for a similar covered bowl.
A rare and large pearlware blue and white mug, printed with a coat of arms and the motto "Itum Est in Viscera Terrae", within a border of oak branches laden with acorns, an Oriental landscape either side, c.1800, a flat footrim chip to the base, 15.5cm. The pickaxes, spades and motto of the coat of arms would indicate it relates to the mining industry.
A rare dated Napoleonic commemorative glass rinser, engraved with the Colchester coat of arms encircled with the inscription `Loyal Colchester Volunteers`, dated 1797 and bearing the initials "C.A.C" above husk swags, 13cm. Cf. Sotheby`s, 23rd April 2004, lots 279 and 280 for similar examples.

A rare, possibly unique, officer’s full dress embroidered pouch, c 1862, of the Volunteer Artillery Corps, Royal Demerara Militia, Royal blue cloth with silver lace border, 3 solid cannon within embroidered oak wreath and crown with scrolls “Demerara” “Artillery” below, silver plated mounts, together with a hand written presentation scroll, laid down on blue silk with wooden top and lower roller, from the “Members of the Volunteer Artillery Corps, Royal Demerara Militia, to Captain John Frederick Bourne on the occasion of his leaving the Colony: a token of sincere respect and a testimony to the uniform kindness and consideration which have characterized his connection with the Corps while serving under his Command. Near Very Good Condition. A rare Tower 10 bore flintlock long sea service musket, 53” overall, barrel 37” with Tower proofs; rounded lock with swan neck cock, the plate deeply marked with crowned “GR” and “Tower”; walnut fullstock with no fore end cap, the butt with good clear 1800 Ordnance storekeeper’s mark, regulation brass mounts including flat butt plate, early style trigger guard and bulbous finial, and large flat wavy sideplate, replacement steel ramrod. A rare and historically interesting garniture of 4 flintlock pistols, by Prosser, Charing Cross, London, c 1800, formerly the property of Capt John Sykes, Royal Navy, comprising a pair of 18 bore large travelling or small holster pistols, 9½” overall, flat topped round twist barrels 5”, the flat stepped locks with safety bolts through to the frizzens, swan neck cocks and rainproof pans, walnut fullstocks with typical Prosser flattened chequered butts with silver escutcheons engraved with the crest and initials of John Sykes, engraved steel mounts, and horn tipped ramrods, one with steel worm, also a pair of stubby 38 bore boxlock pocket pistols, 5½” overall, turn off barrels 1”, with London proofs, rainproof pans, rollers on frizzen springs, top safeties and hidden triggers, frames engraved with trophies and plain bag shaped walnut butts also with silver escutcheons engraved with the crest and initials of John Sykes. Both pairs of pistols in Good Working Order and generally quite crisp condition, the first retaining traces of original finish; in their original fitted oak case, the circular brass lid escutcheon with folding handle engraved “Capt. Sykes, Royal Navy”, the inside of the lid with trade label of “Prosser (late Cullum), Sword Cutler and Belt Maker to the King and HRH the Duke of York, No 9 Charing Cross, London”, containing a good red leather covered 3 way flask with compartment in the base for flints, 17 bore and 36 bore steel pincer moulds, wooden handled 2 way turnscrew, loading rod/mallet, wad punch, barrel key for the pocket pistols and a later cleaning rod. The whole in Good Condition. See front cover Note: Capt. John Sykes was the Commander of the naval sloop Nautilus which encountered the schooner Pickle conveying the news of the Battle of Trafalgar to England. On hearing the news he decided to inform the British Embassy in Lisbon. He then sailed for England sighting the Pickle again later. After encountering gales en route both ships eventually reached England. Lapenatiere, the Commander of Pickle reaching London with the news of the battle about an hour before Sykes. With the lot is sold a copy of the log book of His Majesty’s Ship Nautilus from 3rd April 1805 to 6th April 1806; also details of John Sykes naval service and biographical notes: retiring as Vice Admiral of the Blue 1848, Admiral 1855, Died 1858.
