Casteras, The Substance of the Shadow: images of Victorian Womanhood, exh. cat., Yale, 1982, p.73, under no.30 William Etty (1787-1849) was one of the first British painters of nudes and still lives, often incorporating his figures into history paintings in the grand manner which, during the early nineteenth century was widely regarded as the noblest genres of painting. Born in York, Etty moved to London in 1805 to study at the Royal Academy, also spending a year in the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence in 1807. Between 1822 and 1824, Etty embarked on an extended Grand Tour of Italy, spending nine months in Venice. Influenced by the work of the Old Masters and in particular the Venetian School, Etty exhibited a number of works at the Royal Academy throughout the 1820s with much more success that in the previous decade. With all but one of the works he submitted during this time including a female nude in an historical setting, he soon gained a reputation for indecency, despite being commercially successful. Etty was elected an Associate of the Royal Acedemy in 1824, and a full Academician in 1828. The present lot Phaedria and Cymochles on the Idle Lake was exhibited, with another six works by the artist, at the Royal Academy in 1835. Inspired by Edmund Spenser’s epic poem The Faerie Queene [Book II, Canto 6], it tells the tale of the knight Cymochles, ‘a man of rare undoubted might’ but ‘given all to lust and loose living’ who sets out to avenge the death of his brother Pyrochles but is interceded by Phaedria, the lady of the Idle Lake who symbolises immodest mirth. First published in circa 1589 (Books I, II, III) and then republished in 1596 (with Books IV and V), The Faerie Queene is one of the longest poems in the English language as well as the origin of the verse form known as Spenserian stanza. During the nineteenth century Spenser’s poem had enormous appeal to the Romantic artists on account of its wealth of pictorial incident and its Renaissance pedigree. Etty himself had previously turned to Book III of the poem as inspiration for Britomart Redeems Faire Amoret which was exhibited in 1833. Indeed, the present lot is the second attempt by the artist to depict Phaedria and Cymochles in this scene. The first version, now at Princeton University Art Museum, New Jersey and the studies for which can be found at the V&A museum, London differs from the lot offered here most conspicuously by the absence of Cupid who has been added to the left of Phaedria. The positioning of the two central figures has also been altered and the rudder held by Phaedria in the earlier work has been replaced by a garland of flowers. Each work, when exhibited at the Royal Academy, was accompanied by different lines from Spenser’s poem which emphasise the changes in the composition. In both cases the rich colouring characteristic of Etty’s work demonstrates the artist’s debt to the Venetian Old Masters, most noticeably Titian. The artist’s interest in the nude and his aptitude for depicting both the male and female form are clearly demonstrated. In 1835 when it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy, despite a largely positive reception, the critic for The Times wrote that the work was: ‘…a most disgusting thing, and we wonder that in these times the people who have the direction of this exhibition venture to permit such pictures to be hung. Phaedria is the true representative of one of the Nymphs of Drury lane, and Cymochles looks like an unwashed coalporter…; they are only fit for the contemplation of very old or very young gentlemen, and ought to be reserved for the particular delectation of those classes of persons.’

ƟAbu 'Ali al-Husayn ibn 'Abdallah Ibn Sina, known as 'Avicenna', Al Qanun fi al'Tibb (The Canon of Medicine), first edition, printed in Arabic [Rome, Typographia Medicea, 1593] title in Arabic with publisher's details in Latin, 6 parts in one volume, comprising the title, preface (5 folios), Book I (pp. 1-112), Book II (pp. 113-280), Book III (pp. 281-610), Book IV (pp. 1-176), Book V (pp. 177-268), the index (32 leaves) and a further “Compendium of Ibn Sina” (pp. 1-85), ornamental woodcut head and tail-pieces, text printed in double ruled border, overlining to headings and important phrases throughout in red by hand, a few early personal ink seals (of seemingly Persian origin), a few contemporary annotations to margins, first and last 4 leaves with margins repaired at outer edges, some of these mounted on stubs, leaves a little browned and some light water-staining throughout, overall a very good copy of this rare text [Adams A2322, Schnurrer 393] 326 by 220 mm.; nineteenth-century quarter morocco, covers in green cloth, fraying a little at outer edges, morocco spine with 5 raised bands, a little rubbed The first printed edition of the most authoritative medical text in the Islamic world Avicenna (d.1037) was a Persian physician and astronomer whose literary contributions formed much of the foundations of medicine in the Islamic Golden Age. This particular text, the Canon of Medicine, was used in Western and Islamic universities alike as the standard medical encyclopedia from the Middle Ages until the eighteenth century. This monumental printing was carried out by the Typographia Medicea, the Medici Oriental Press of Ferdinand de Medici, who were responsible for many of the earliest Arabic printed texts. They became known for their mastering of printing in foreign languages and translating Christian texts into these languages to spread Christianity across the Islamic world. Their famous Arabic translation of the Gospels precedes this work by 2 years, and the final section of this codex includes Christian anecdotes and teachings which were an addition to the standard text by the Medici press. This religious content may be the reason for the scarcity of this final part of the work, and interestingly although the present volume has been in the Middle East for a few centuries, the final section has remained. Only three copies of this scarce work, all fragmentary, have appeared at auction in the past four decades: that from the library of Camille Aboussouan (Sotheby's, 17 June 1993, lot 445), another from the Haskell F. Norman Library (Christie's, 18 March 1998, lot 26), and most recently in our rooms (28 November 2013, lot 362). None of these copies was complete, most lacking parts IV, V and the “Compendium of Ibn Sina”. Ɵ Indicates that the lot is subject to buyer’s premium of 25% exclusive of VAT (0% VAT).

A RARE CHINESE EXPORT COVERED TUREEN RECOVERED FROM THE SWEDISH EAST INDIA COMPANY SHIP G Ö THEBORG , WRECKED 1745, RECOVERED FROM THE MID-1980s decorated with deep blue and gilt work with gilt flower bud knop to shaped lid – 11½in. (29cm.) wide; together with two dishes and a plate of similar design (4) £250-350 ~~*~~ Built for the Swedish East India Co. in 1738 and named for its home port, the 850 ton Götheborg had made three successful trips to China. In 1745 she returned laden with a full cargo when, just 800 meters from her berth in fair and clear weather and despite the presence of a highly experienced pilot, she struck a notorious rock which lifted the bow some 4½ft from the water, and stuck taking on water fast. Whilst much of her cargo was saved, her wreck remained above the waterline for many years and, when it finally sank, it was forgotten about. In 1984 a local diving club discovered it again in about 4-5 meters of water and brought up a number of artefacts - much of it porcelain shards, but also intact pieces and much else besides. A total of 5,750 artefacts were ultimately raised, and generated enough interest to cause a copy of the ship to be built and sailed.
A RARE HAMBURG-AMERIKA LINE TRAVEL AGENTS ADVERTISING BAROMETER/THERMOMETER/HYGROMETER FOR THE S.S. IMPERATOR , CIRCA 1912 the gilt-embossed chromolithograph of the ship titled and inscribed The Quadruple Screw and Turbine Express Steamer IMPERATOR the largest Vessel in the World set in black glass with bevelled edges secured to wooden back and inset with 6in. aneroid barometer with curved bar thermometers; separate thermometer and hygrometer -- 24 x 16½in. (61 x 42cm.) ~~*~~ If not immediately the most successful liner of her day, the 52,117 ton Imperator was certainly finely appointed within and could boast every modern conveniance then expected. The Kaiser insisted that the ship, perhaps uniquely, be referred to by masculine pronoun and so it was that he was laid up for the duration of the Great War. Given to Cunard in reparations for Lusitania , he required an extensive refit and at this time lost his striking double-headed eagle figurehead. Renamed Berengaria 'he' had a successful career as flagship under their banner, but was laid up from 1938 when 'his' aged wiring caught fire and was broken up in 1946.
