5th-3rd century BC. A carnelian bead with one flat and one domed face, intaglio reclining satyr, nude, resting on a ropework border, with kantharos held in one hand. See Hoey Middleton, S. Seals, Finger Rings, Engraved Gems and Amulets in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, Exeter, 1998 for discussion. 3.29 grams, 19mm (3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; part of his family collection since the 1970s; supplied with a museum-quality impression. Extremely fine condition. Rare.
1st-3rd century AD. A rock crystal vessel with facetted sidewall, chamfered shoulder, conical finial, two lateral right-angled handles; circular rim with applied gold sheath. 138 grams, 82mm (3 1/4"). From an English private collection; formerly acquired in 1968. Accompanied with geologic report No.TL003120, by geologic consultant Dr R. L. Bonewitz. Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, mentions a number of sources for rock crystal, such as Asia Minor, Cyprus, Portugal and the Alps, though he states the best came from India. The stone was fashioned into vessels in Bronze Age Greece as well as Cyprus, Asia Minor, Egypt and Mesopotamia. The use of rock crystal for vessels fell out of fashion in Classical Greece but was revived in the Hellenistic period where it was associated with the wealthy elite in such cities as Alexandria and Antioch. In the Roman Empire rock crystal was highly valued and according to Pliny, Livia, the wife of Augustus, dedicated a block weighing one hundred and fifty pounds on the Capitol; he also mentions a wealthy Roman woman paying one hundred and fifty thousand sestertii for a single rock crystal dipper. Suetonius mentions that Nero had two crystal cups carved with Homeric scenes that he broke when he received the news that the Senate had called for his execution. The high value placed by the Romans on rock crystal can be seen in the high degree of carving that the surviving pieces have, and their relative rarity compared to other stone vessels. Extremely fine condition. Rare.
1st-3rd century AD. A gold finger ring D-shaped in section with flat lateral faces, seven facets. Cf. Chadour, A.B. Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 388. 4.86 grams, 19mm overall, 15.49mm internal diameter (approximate size British I 1/2, USA 4 3/4, Europe 8.63, Japan 8) (3/4"). From the private collection of M.G.; formerly in a Southern German collection since the 1950s. Very fine condition. Very rare.
1st century AD. An emerald or rare chromium green chalcedony cloison, intaglio frieze depicting three figures on a baseline: a central bearded figure in armour with wreath to the brow holding a sceptre in the crook of his left arm, right arm bent around a spear held by an advancing figure in profile wearing a sagum (military cloak) and helmet with a spear resting on his shoulder, third figure in military dress, bareheaded with a spear and other object(s) in the crook of his left arm; set in a substantial later gold ring. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 202 for type. 24.11 grams, 27.66mm overall, 20.56 x 15.93mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q 3/4, USA 18 1/2, Europe 18 1/2, Japan 17) (1"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent, supplied with geologic report No. TL003122, by geologic consultant Dr R. L. Bonewitz. Dr. Bonewitz opines that emeralds of this size and colour were very rare in the Roman world but are not unknown. The other possibility – chromium chalcedony (also called chrome chalcedony) – is itself a rarity in ancient jewelry. Its source was in modern Turkey (then Anatolia), and the stone disappeared from Roman jewelry in the second century AD. The source was small and was not rediscovered until late in the 20th century. In either instance the stone is rare and unusual. [A video of this lot is available on the TimeLine Auctions website] Extremely fine condition. A large wearable size.
3rd-4th century AD. A square lead plaque with chamfered rim with laurel wreath in centre, to the reverse low-relief text to the face 'MY(.)H? / MHNO? / ???(.)? / APXOY', pierced to the upper edge for suspension. 314 grams, 64mm (2 1/2"). Acquired on the UK art market; previously the property of a German collector; acquired 1980-1990. A laurel (wreath) is a symbol of victory and honour. In Greek mythology, Apollo is represented wearing a laurel wreath on his head. Laurel wreaths were awarded to victors, both in athletic competitions, including the ancient Olympics at Olympia and in poetic meets. In Rome they were symbols of martial victory, crowning a successful commander during his triumph. Fine condition. Rare.
2nd-3rd century AD. A magical heliotrope intaglio engraved with a cock-headed anguipede holding a whip and shield. Michael, S. Die Magischen Gemmen, Berlin, 2004, 3.A.1a/15 and pl.48, 2. 0.54 grams, 15mm (1/2"). Property of a Dutch collector; formerly with Martin and Münzzentrum, Rheinland, Germany, sale 174, lot 1135. Fine condition. Extremely rare.
7th century AD. A bronze steelyard arm, square in section with one pyramidal and one knop finial, gradation marks and numeric letters to three faces, attachment holes and slot; marked in pointillé letters '????yrio' ([belonging to] Porphyry) with a pointillé cross before; with old collector's note on numeric values of the characters. 682 grams, 51cm (20"). Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired London art market, 1960s-1980s. [No Reserve] Fair condition. Rare.
8th-10th century AD. A bronze weight, round in plan with conical body and domed cap, concave underside; incised circumferential lines, engraved monogram with pointillé detailing. See Weber, K. Byzantinische Münzgewichte: Materialkorpus für 1-Nomisma-Gewichte, Schwelm, 2009 for discussion. 54 grams, 21mm (3/4"). From an important European collection, Munich, Germany; formed in the 1970s. Very fine condition. Rare.
6th century AD. A bronze mount of a long-necked bird with elliptical body and short tail; hollow to the underside, filled with cuprous corrosion products where it was attached to the rim of a hanging bowl; the creature's back with an elliptical panel of yellow enamel infill surrounded by a thin green enamelled outer border extending to the tail; the neck D-shaped in section and arched to form a hook, with the eyes and beak indicated on the upper face. Cf. the triangular mounts on a bowl from Ipswich in West. S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998, fig.69 and discussion in Bruce-Mitford, R. and Raven, S. The Corpus of Late Celtic Hanging-Bowls with an Account of the Bowls Found in Scandinavia, Oxford, 2005. 7.04 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Found Wiltshire, UK. The mount was used as one of a series of hooks by which the bowl was suspended. Hanging bowls formed part of the currency of prestige in 6th-7th century Britain; most of them appear to have been produced in British workshops and feature enamelling, a technique not often used by the Anglo-Saxons; they are mainly found in high-status Anglo-Saxon graves. It is likely that they formed part of tribute and dowry exchanges. Very fine condition. Rare.
9th-11th century AD. A bronze flat-section penannular bracelet with a bear's head in plan to each terminal, geometric ornament; Baltic workmanship. Cf. Sedov, B.B.
