East India Company, Seringapatam Medal 1799, 48mm in tin as issued to other ranks, very fine, some edge corrosion, RARE * As Napoleon invaded Egypt attempting to cut off the British Empire`s eastern possessions, in India Tipu Mysore readily joined the attack. The quick victory of the Egyptian campaign left Mysore in an awkward position; Lord Arthur Wellesley had mustered forces that Mysore could not hope to resist. The capture of the capital Sriringapatnamtook place in May 1799; in the attack Tipu Sultan was killed; this medal was issued for the Officers and troops involved.

Lieut.-Col. J. Stevenson-Hamilton The Low-Veld: Its Wild Life and Its People 8vo. An unusually nice crisp copy of this book in the original brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. The cloth has some very minor marks and a few tiny bumps but is near fine. There is an ownership signature on the ffep. but otherwise the book is internally clean and unfoxed. In the rare dw. which has a 7x3cm. chip at the top of the fore edge of the front panel, some lesser chips and tears and some staining of the front panel(see pictures). Foreword by J.C. Catherine Andras (1775-1860) - Rare wax model of Rose Bruce, widow of Samuel Bruce, Minister of Shand Street Meeting House, Dublin. The figure is seated and wearing a lace bonnet and grey dress, the period glazed gilt gesso framed case with contemporary hand written script to the reverse ‘The hand carved effigy of Rose Bruce, widow of Samuel Bruce Minister of Shand Street Meeting House in Dublin. This exemplary woman, left a widow when little more than 38 years of age, with 5 Sons and Two Daughters, the eldest not having attained his 14th year, devoted herself to the welfare, and by unexampled economy ability and firmness inspired by the tenderest maternal affection, obtained her great object of giving the most liberal education and some accomplishments to all her children, except the youngest Son, who died an infant, fitted her Sons to fill respectable situations in life, instilling into them principals of honour and religion, that assisted them to maintain the stations they obtained, without reproach. The whole income with which she managed to effect these objects, being considerably under £300 per ann: and without assistance either pecuniary or otherwise. Her eldest Son, Michael, died 31st Dec: 1778, a Merchant. Her surviving issue are William a D.D.Principal of the Belfast Academy, an eminent Minister of the Gospel. Robert, established in Bristol, as a Merchant, 30th Oct: 1782 Samuel, a Stock & Insurance Broker in Dublin in 1780 Elizabeth & Mary, who live in their Brothers house in Dublin un-married, where they have resided in ease and comfort with their venerable Mother, since 1796, and when she died in peace and honour on the 9th of Dec: 1806 in her 79th year. She was the eldest Daughter of Robert Rainey of Magherap Co, Antrim, born 11th July 1728, married in 1751 - her husband was born 17th march 1722 and died 12th Feb: 1767. This effigy was model’d from the life in 1799 while she was on a visit to her Son, Robert in Bristol, by Catherine Andrews (sic), now of London. Robert Bruce 1807’. The figure 18cm high, the case 33cm high The case is in original condition with some minor nibbling and losses to the gesso, the back panel with the hand written script is rather ragged around the edges and lifting, in probably the 1930`s somebody has typed out this script which remains with the

A rare framed and glazed envelope & letter dated 27th March 1900 and posted in Mafeking, South Africa. The letter was sent to the vendor's grandfather by Walter Wissing (the envelope is stamped Wissing Brothers, Mafeking, Bechuanaland to verso) and reads: 'Just a line to say we are safe & well - we have been besieged since 12th Oct last but we think we will soon be relieved. We are having a very heavy day of it today, having had several hundred shells into the town already and some 100 pounders! (72 of these latter up to now). I am chiefly writing you to furnish you with these stamps as they are only procurable for bona fide postage purposes' The envelope has six stamps with Mafeking Besieged overprints Strip of three Cape of Good Hope 1d on 1/2d green SG1 Cape of Good Hope 3d on 1d carmine SG3 British Bechuanaland 6d on 3d lilac & black SG10 British Bechuanaland 1s on 4d green & purple brown SG11 The above have 30th March 1900 postmark. Affixed to the front is a 3d deep blue on paper SG20, postmarked 11th May 1900 & to verso a 1d pale blue SG17 also postmarked 11th May 1900 The siege of Mafeking was the most famous action of the second Boer War and took place over a period of 217 days from October 1899 to May 1900.

1796 (31 December) eyewitness account of the failed French invasion at Bantry Letter from Colonel Thomas Balfour of the North Lowland Fencibles to his wife in Orkney. We have been marched here in consequence of an alarm spread by a French fleet appearing off Bantry Bay....one officer and four seamen ... landed have been made prisoners"" . With postal charges ""via Donaghadee"" [to Portpatrick].""Expedition d`Irlande"" was a 15,000 strong invasion force gathered by the French Directory for landing in Ireland in December. The fleet left France on 15 December 1796 but the operation was abandoned at Bantry on 29 December. This is a rare eyewitness account of the failed invasion.

Hamilton, Edwin (Ed.), Pat"" [Irish Periodical] Vol. 1. No. 1 - 26 & Vol. 2. No. 1- 51. 15th January, 1881 - 31st December, 1882"" (77 issues). ill. John Fergus O`Hea. Dublin: Swan, 1881. 4to. Hard Cover. Good 77 issues bound in one vol. Colour & black & white illustrations. Covers worn and stained. Internally very good. Rare. Pat was an Irish weekly satirical journal published in Dublin by W. P. Swan, beginning in December 1879. It was founded by cartoonist John Fergus O`Hea and writer Edwin Hamilton, who had previously worked on Zozimus and Ireland`s Eye. Pat`s political sympathies were for Home Rule, although it also featured apolitical material. The character of Pat, the honest Irishman represented as a handsome, good-natured tenant farmer, would appear in cartoons by O`Hea and others in other publications. Pat temporarily stopped publishing in September 1880, but resumed publication in January 1881, with cartoonist Thomas Fitzpatrick joining O`Hea on the title. It finally folded in March 1883, after which Hamilton founded the short-lived magazine The Irish Diamond.

The Irish Times. The Irish Times Newspaper, Tuesday 25th April, 1916 Two Special Extra Issues of the Newspaper 1916. Good two copies of the Irish Times of 25 April, 1916. The first of 8 pages gives a full report of events and was withdrawn on government orders at 8 a.m. The second of 6 pages excludes all the reports but includes two government proclamations with a brief statement Sinn Fein Rising in Dublin.........the authorities have taken active & energetic measures to deal with the situation."" Loosely with them is a notice from the Manager of the Irish Times to the effect that: "" Permission to issue this paper was withdrawn at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, 25th April, 1916. The paper subsequently issued to the public on that day was considerably reduced in size."" Rare.

1921: (February-September) IRA prisoner mail to and from Ballykinler Camp. A correspondence between Patrick O`Loughlin, Prisoner No. 975, Hut 38, H Company, No. 2 Camp, Ballykinler, Co. Down, and his parents at 39 Lower Kevin Street. Comprises 20 letters from the prisoner, all with stamped envelopes postmarked BALLYKINLER CAMP, and 12 letters to the prisoner, all with stamped envelopes and camp censor manuscript markings, also some empty envelopes and some other letters and cards. Also included is a photocopy of O`Loughlin`s Internment Order of 29 December 1920. A rare primary source on life in the War of Independence prisoner camps and in Dublin city. (48)

1939-46 Emergency Mercantile Marine Medal with three bars - rare special issue for SS Ardmore crew This issue, apparently from a cast of an original medal, is gilded. It was ordered by the Minister of Defence in 1998 to be awarded to the families of crew of the SS Ardmore. SS Ardmore, which was carrying cattle and agricultural produce from Cork to Fishguard in Wales, was reported missing in heavy seas on 13 November 1940. The crew comprised twenty sailors and five cattlemen. Two bodies were washed up on the Welsh coast in November 1940. It was only in 1998 that divers located the wreck off the Saltee Islands and confirmed that the ship had been sunk by a mine. This medal was awarded to the family of James Power, and is accompanied by a manuscript account of the SS Ardmore written by a relation of James Power, memorial service booklets, a video S.S> Ardmore - The Final Chapter"" and a bronze maquette of the memorial plaque erected in Cork Docklands, as well as extensive notes on the ship and its crew including copies of relevant documents and correspondence.

Smith 4. One of the great novels of the 19C. In later issues a leaf containing a list of the illustrations was added to volume one and the publisher’s name was added to the spines. A most desirable rarity of English literature with an Irish connection. (3)
