Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978)Portrait of Florence Forsyth Oil on panel, 60.7 x 47.4cm (23¾ x 18¾'')Signed Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the sitter's family, prior to 1931; thence by descent. A fine example of a vivacious portrait of a young woman, Florence Forsyth, holding a sprig of snowdrops, against a stylised mountain backdrop by Gerald Leslie Brockhurst. Thought to date from the late 1920s, when Florence was a singer in London, it was commissioned by her father.Celebrated as a society portrait painter from the early 1920s through several decades, Brockhurst was also recognised as a printmaker of rare ability. Born in Edgebaston, Birmingham in 1890, he suffered from recurrent ear infections as a child and wrote poorly, but was precociously good at drawing. So much so that he was accepted in art school aged 12, first in Birmingham, then London. His self-portrait aged 15 is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. A travel scholarship brought him to France and Italy, where he was particularly impressed by the work of Piero della Francesca, Botticelli and da Vinci. His beautiful, Renaissance-style portrait of an unnamed woman, titled Ranunculus, (in Sheffield City Galleries), like Florence clutching a sprig of flowers, is judged an important work in pre-war British art by Kenneth McConkey in ‘The British Portrait.’ He also met, and in 1914 married, Anaïs Melisande Folin. They spent the war years mostly in Ireland, and visited Connemara. Besides painting some landscapes, Brockhurst painted Folin as the personification of Ireland against a mountainous Connemara setting (now in the Hunterian Gallery in Glasgow), and several portraits including those of Co Clare-born poet Francis McNamara (like Brockhurst part of Augustus John’s social circle) and Thomas Bodkin’s fiancée Aileen Cox (now in the National Gallery of Ireland collection, with several of Brockhurst’s Irish graphic works). Back in London from 1919, Brockhurst quickly became known as a printmaker and portrait painter. Although he was a slow, meticulous worker and demanding of his sitters, he became the portraitist of choice. Subjects included Margaret, Duchess of Argyll (now in Tate Britain), Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor and the society beauty Florence Lambert, wife of composer Constant Lambert.Brockhurst’s portraits are brilliantly lit. He had the instincts of a skilled Hollywood lighting-cameraman and his ability to lend his sitters a film star gloss was often noted. In the 1930s he could demand 1000 guineas per commission. But when his relationship with his model Kathleen ‘Dorette’ Woodward became public his marriage ended acrimoniously and he and Woodward moved to the United States, settling in New Jersey (they married in 1947). His services were as much in demand as ever and his subjects included Merle Oberon, Marlene Dietrich, J Paul Getty, several of the Rothschilds and many more. But by the time of his death, in 1978 (Woodward lived until 1995), he was a relatively neglected figure. Since the turn of the century, however, there has been renewed interest in his work, with several exhibitions in the US, and he is increasingly recognised as a significant 20th century printmaker and portrait painter.

Architectural: A rare bronze door knocker in the form of a Cockatrice by Anton Dominik Fernkorn circa 1860 34cm high Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813-1878) was born in Erfurt near Leipzig and studied sculpture under Johann Baptist Stiglmaier and Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler in Munich, from 1836 to 1840. His first sculptural project, “Saint George and the Dragon” for the courtyard of the Montenuovo palace, attracted attention, and the Austrian government appointed him director of the imperial bronze foundry at Vienna, in 1840, where he was part of the movement against the Neo-Classicism. He rediscovered Baroque sculpture and used it as the basis for his equestrian statue of Archduke Charles (1859), who had defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern in 1809. This unusual bronze door knocker, baroque in style, is virtually identical in modelling to a large scale cockatrice made for the medieval Trsat castle in modern day Croatia. (see picture) This cockatrice, the so-called Dragon of Trsat, was a mythical creature cast in bronze that grew to become one of the best known symbols of the city. There are two, both commissioned by Austrian Field-Marshal and Count Laval Nugent who purchased the castle in the 19th century. A big history buff, Nugent, originally of Irish descent, was particularly keen on the legacy of the Frankopan, one of the leading noble families in Croatia from the 12th to the 17th century. As Trsat Castle used to belong to the Frankopan dynasty, Nugent was happy to acquire the edifice along with another similar estate, the Frankopan castle in Bosiljevo. The cockatrices, by Anton Dominik Fernkorn were installed in front of the central object on the castle grounds, guarding the gate to what is now Nugent’s mausoleum. For the Cathedral of Speyer, in 1858 he completed six of the eight free-stone statues of the German emperors buried there. He also made a statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy, but by unveiling in 1865 he was mentally ill and no longer able to work. He is well remembered for his portraits, and these include a bust of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and the funerary bust of Carl Ludwig Freiherr von Bruck in 1862. He was also a noted animalier, producing works such as the Lion of Aspern in Vienna. He died at the age of 65 in the hospital for mental patients in Saint Radengundu near Graz. Literature: Anton Dominik Fernkorn, Monument to Josipu Jelacicu, ISBN-86-7460-001-11 (a copy which is included with this lot) Published Zagreb, 1990.

Garden Statues: A rare Coade stone figure of a seated man stamped Coade, Lambeth 1840 60cm high by 56cm wide Eleanor Coade (d.1821) opened her Lambeth Manufactory for ceramic artificial stone in 1769, and appointed the sculptor John Bacon as its manager two years later. She was employed by all the leading late 18th century architects. From about 1777 she began her engraved designs, which were published in 1784 in a catalogue of over 700 items entitled A Descriptive Catalogue of Coade’s Artificial Stone Manufactory. Then in 1799, the year she entered into partnership with her cousin John Sealy, she issued a handbook of her Pedlar’s Lane exhibition Gallery. The firm became Coade and Sealy from this date and following Sealy’s death in 1813, it reverted to Coade and in 1821 with the death of the younger Eleanor Coade, control of the firm passed to William Croggan, who died in 1835, following bankruptcy. Coade’s manufactures resembling a fine-grained natural stone, have always been famed for their durability. This piece, made in the last years of Coade’s production would have formed part of a larger group, perhaps as an individual commission on a building.
