VICTORIA CROSS: John Manners Smith (1864-1920) Lieutenant Colonel in the British Indian Army, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Nilt Fort, India, on 20th December 1891. A.L.S., J Manners Smith, three pages, 8vo, Newbury, 7th December 1912, to Lauder. Smith states that he is pleased to hear that his correspondent has been awarded the Royal Humane Society`s medal `for your brave action in saving my life...a cutting about the presentation was sent to us today...I feel it is quite impossible to express how much I owe to you & shall never be able to discharge the debt of gratitude. The more I think of it the more I realise the risk you took for me.`; Thomas Orde Lawder Wilkinson (1894-1916) Canadian Soldier, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at La Boiselle, France, on 5th July 1916. Rare D.S., T. O. L. Wilkinson, in pencil, one page, small 8vo, n.p., 4th October n.y. (1915). The printed postcard takes the form of a letter giving various message options, the irrelevant ones struck through in pencil by Wilkinson. Signed and dated at the conclusion. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album; Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Indian Mutiny on 2nd January 1858. L.S., Fred Roberts, two pages, 8vo, Head Quarters Camp, 4th January 1886, to `My dear Nawab`, stating that he was disappointed to learn that his correspondent has to leave Delhi `just before our manoeuvres commence` and inviting him to the camp tomorrow morning. HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. A rare, unusual signed 7 x 4.5 photograph depicting Hitler standing in a three quarter length pose, in profile, alongside a number of other Nazis, each wearing their uniforms and with armbands featuring the Swastika. Standing inside a wooden panelled room, Hitler and his associates are all photographed making the Nazi Salute. Signed by the Fuhrer in dark fountain pen ink, largely across a clear area of the image, and dated Konigsberg, 4th October 1935 in his hand. VG Signed photographs of Adolf Hitler making the Deutscher Gruss, a salute adopted by the Nazi Party to indicate loyalty and subservience to the Fuhrer, are extremely rare. The salute became the embodiment of Hitler`s cult of personality throughout Nazi Germany.

Rare D.S., Heydrich, one page, folio, Berlin, 24th January 1939. The partially printed document, in German, appoints Walter Hess to be an assistant detective superintendent. Signed by Heydrich at the foot on behalf of the Reich Minister of the Interior. With blind embossed Nazi Eagle and Swastika seal. With blank integral leaf. Four central folds and two file holes to the left margin. VG

Committed suicide & FRITSCH WERNER VON (1880-1939) Wehrmacht officer, a member of the German High Command. The second German General to be killed in World War II. A fine, large signed 15.5 x 13 photograph by both Beck and Fritsch individually, the image depicting the two Generals, each wearing white uniforms, seated either side of a desk. Fritsch studies a map which is laid dout before him. Signed by both with their names alone in bold fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount. An extremely rare pair of signatures, particularly so in this form. VG Provenance: Originally sold in a Charles Hamilton auction on 18th October 1979, Lot 194.
