A rare and important WWII D.F.M. medal group to 1115187. Sgt. D.W. Chapman R.A.F. comprising the Distinguished Flying Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945, with matching miniatures, and the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, also a Distinguished Flying Medal to 956072. Sgt K.P. Leach R.A.F.Sergeant Chapman was a pilot during WWII and Sergeant Leach was his navigator. Chapman joined the RAF in 1940 at the age of 20, and earned his wings after training in South Africa in November 1941. He joined 235 Squadron in 1942 and was teamed up with navigator Sergeant Leach to fly Beaufighter aircraft. Chapman was awarded his D.F.M. first, after an offensive patrol in the Bay of Biscay on 26th November 1942. They managed to destroy one enemy aircraft and damage another, but took heavy damage themselves. According to the squadron's commanding officer in his citation, despite one engine failing, with Leach giving navigational instructions from the rear of the plane, Chapman managed to continue attacking the enemy and evading their fire "until the enemy aircraft were either dispersed or shot down." In another incident in December of the same year the two managed to evade an enemy attack and crash land a damaged plane. It was during a reconnaissance mission on 2nd February 1943 off the coast of Stavangar in Norway that the battle that would earn Leach his D.F.M. took place. The crew were "jumped by two F.W.190 and attacked for twenty eight minutes." Whilst taking evasive action, Leach was wounded in the foot and Chapman in the shoulder. Despite his foot wound, Leach helped Chapman with his injury, giving him medication, whilst also issuing instructions for evading the Germans. The pair once again made it back to base with a heavily damaged plane and had to make another crash landing. When Chapman heard that command wished to give him another D.F.M., he instead insisted that it went to Sergeant Leach as he would not have been alive were it not for his actions. He said "If Ken doesn't get it, then I don't want it". When Leach passed away some years later, his family passed the medal on to Sergeant Chapman, stating that it was the only appropriate place for it. Denys Walter Chapman died in August 2012 and left instructions for his family to sell his medals after his passing.Included in the lot is a large quantity of related paperwork and ephemera including citations, recommendations, maps, a damage report for the Beaufighter after the 1943 attack, photographs, letters, birth certificate, medical history, details of sorties, books, Beaufighter pilot notes, etc. CONDITION REPORT: This collection is from the family of Sgt. D.W. Chapman and has not been tampered with in any way. It does not include the Silver Jubilee medal certification, however does include the medal itself which was awarded to Chapman.Dates log book covers include - July 31st 1941 - January 11th 1944.

The National Maritime Museum note in one of their letters that they only have two other Vernon buttons in their collection, both of which have had their shanks removed, and they note a third example being present in the British Museum. A large mid 20th century photograph album of approximately 50 pages of which 30 are well filled with annotated images. Taken by a British army chaplain. In the album, within a Kodak wallet stamped with the name of a Benghazi photo studio are a quantity of small, loose photographs. Most are taken in India, some are dated 1937. Eight other, extremely interesting photographs show the arrival of well dressed civilians in an army transport plane being greeted by British officers. One photo shows two British officers which we believe to be General Montgomery (Commander in Chief, Middle East Command, August 1942 - January 1944) and General Auchinleck, Commander in Chief, Middle East Command July 1941- August 1942). Others include a military parade and inspection by Montgomery. These are unposed, personal snapshots of a meeting between two of the most important military commanders of WWII. Montgomery's assumption of command in North Africa proved pivotal to the war. There are very few images of the two men together, as such, these photographs are extremely rare. The first half of the album filled with tourist images from India, The Khyber Pass, Lucknow, all the major sights of Delhi, Bombay, Lahore (including some interesting shots of a Hindu festival) Simla, Peshawar and Amritsar. A book of 16 postcards of views of Lucknow. There are also many interesting images of street scenes, beggars, traders etc. After the Indian section of the album, the images move to Malta, Gibrata and Tobruk. There is a photograph of the Empire Windrush leaving Tobruk, unexploded mines, a Tripoli caravan of camels and post war ruins of Tobruk. Also many images of Benghazi including several pages of photographs of Remembrance Sunday services in Benghazi in 1950, 51 and 52 leading us to speculate that the owner of the album was stationed there during this period. Other images: The enthronement of the new R.C. Bishop of Benghazi dated 29th June 1952. The Royal Army Chaplaincy Dept training centre at Bagshot and many tourist images of San Rhemo, Cannes, Nice, Paris and Port Said. (See illustration)
