From The Master's HandNo. 3 of 8 Copies OnlyJoyce (James). De Honni-Soit a Mal-y-Chance. Mesures, 15 Janvier 1936. [French translation of Joyce's essay From a banned writer to a banned singer,a tribute to the singer John Sullivan]. Sm qto, 9pp, stapled (centre pages loose) in printed paper covers, French-style glassine wrapper, probably original. No. 3 of only eight numbered copies (offprints from the periodical Mesures) on stamped Alfa Navarre paper. Signed by Joyce on f.f.e.p. and extensively corrected in ink in his hand, about ten separate corrections, mostly to spelling but including one insertion of an extra word. Staples slightly rusted with a little staining, but in excellent condition, EXCESSIVELY RARE. 'A titre de Kerryosité, dis, a quoi rime un Sullivan?'Joyce first met the Irish-born tenor John Sullivan or O'Sullivan in late 1929, at the urging of his brother Stanislaus. Sullivan was Cork-born, like Joyce's father, and had established himself at the Paris Opera. Joyce was overcome with enthusiasm when he heard him sing there. Joyce was himself a promising singer in his youth, and for several years he devoted much time and energy to promoting Sullivan among his friends, and trying to secure better opportunities for him. He claimed that Sullivan's career had been held back by the jealousy of others [see Ellmann p. 619-21]. His tribute From a banned writer to a banned singer was first published in the New Statesman and Nation, 27 Feb.1932 [S&C C81]. This French translation by Arnold Petitjean (stated to have been reviewed by Joyce) was published in the French magazine Mesures, 15 Jan. 1936 [S&C D34]. Just eight numbered offprints of the translation were issued for Joyce and signed by him. Of the eight copies, the present item appears to be the only one surviving with manuscript corrections by Joyce. There is a copy in the NLI, without the corrections. We have not traced the other copies, and it may be that they have not survived.Almost certainly a unique Joyce item, extensively corrected in the writer's hand, and testifying to an enthusiasm which preoccupied Joyce for several years in the 1930s. Horton labels and a pair of Horton headstamped 'dummy' cartridges, the lid outer marked 'WALTER MACFARLANE. SARACEN FOUNDRY. GLASGOW.' Provenance: The makers have kindly indicated that the serial number places the gun as having been made circa 1906/7 The name on the case will likely refer to Walter Macfarlane II, nephew to Walter Macfarlane, founding partner in the company Macfarlane & Co. Ltd., Scotland's premier manufacturer of ornamental ironwork. Macfarlane II (1853 - 1932) joined the firm in 1871 and became a partner in 1880. When his uncle died in 1885, he took over as owner and set on a course to both modernise and standardise the company and its products, to great effect. Utilising the skills of some of Glasgow's best architects, their designs for street lamps, drinking fountains, railings and bandstands were exported throughout the entire British Empire. They also designed and supplied the building interiors for clients such as Selfridges (London, 1928) and the Art Deco Burtons building on Argyle Street (1930) The Saracen Fountain in Alexandra Park, Glasgow was originally a showpiece, exhibited at the 1901 Glasgow International Exhibition before being generously donated to the city by Macfarlane.S2 - Sold as a Section 2 Firearm under the 1968 Firearms Act

A RARE .650 PERCUSSION CARBINE, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'ROYAL DOCKYARD BATTALION ISSUE', no visible serial number, circa 1850 and of similar form to a Constabulary Carbine (q.v), with smoothbore iron 26 1/2in. barrel, block fore-sight, no provision for rear-sight, solid rounded top-tang, borderline engraved bar-action lock marked 'RL. DOCKYD. BATTN.', walnut full-stock with brass furniture, rear iron sling swivel (front absent), variant Hanoverian bayonet catch and dome-headed iron ramrod Other Notes: The Dockyard Battalions were first formed around 1846 when the development of steam-powered vessels provoked worries about a surprise invasion. A Royal Commission recommended strengthening the defences of the Royal Dockyards hence the Dockyard Battalions were formed and a sum of £20,000 was granted for their establishment in 1847. The battalions had many different aspects including infantry, artillery, boat battalions, sappers and musicians. The officers of the battalions were usually employees holding high office in the dockyards. In 1847, the strength of the battalion was 10,000 men and officers - 2,000 in Portsmouth, 1395 at Chatham, 1784 at Devonport, 1057 at Deptford, 994 at Woolwich, 890 at Sheerness and 817 at Pembroke excluding officers and sergeants. Men from victualling yards in Gosport and Plymouth were also recruited. Employees between 18 - 55 years were eligible for entry which was voluntary at first but became a condition of employment afterwards. Officers were not gazetted in the normal way by London but were described as "esquires" for Captains and "gents" for Lieutenants. The uniform was a duck fatigue dress and forage cape loaned free of charge. Drills took place in summer months for which the men were allowed to go home early from work and then return for drill, for which they received two hours extra pay. Failure to return for drill resulted in half a day's pay being docked. Although small arms drill was undertaken mainly by men under the age of 36, most of the drills were for handling heavy guns and the management of launches and gunboats. Retired Royal Marine instructors acted as the drill instructors. The Battalions were all disbanded in 1857.

Coming so soon after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, The King was determined that his power should be further reinforced by a coronation to surpass the lavish ceremony held for the former emperor in 1804 – the result was the most expensive coronation ever held in Britain (costing over £9.5 million in today’s money). The costumes worn by the participants in the procession from Westminster Hall to the Abbey were one of the most notable aspects of the coronation. King George, with his personal interest in costume, assisted with the design of some of the outfits which were loosely based on the clothing of the Elizabethan and Stuart periods. John Fane, 10 th Earl of Westmorland (1759 – 1841), was a British Tory politician who served in most of the cabinets of the period, primarily as Lord Privy Seal, a position which he held for thirty-five years from 1798 (except for the years 1806 and 1807).
