Lot 100

A RARE CHINESE WHITISH JADE CONCH SHELL BRUSH WASHER, the front spiral part of the shell with incised details, leading to the central cavity terminating in a swept end, sitting on waves, the back with some subtle russet markings, Qing, probably Qianlong, 3.25"" long. Provenance: The Collection of the late John Walden (1925-2013). The conch shell is a rare but highly significant subject to find in jade. It symbolises the pure and true teachings of the Buddha and is also a symbol of the Buddha`s voice, used to call worshipers together. Actual white conch shells are commonly used ritual implements in Tibetan Buddhism, to which the Qianlong Emperor adhered. This religious devotion was also a key political symbol of the Qing Emperor`s rule. It is significant that amongst the most precious objects placed in front of the Emperor a white conch shell took central place. Very few examples in jade have appeared on the market. Christie`s Hong Kong sold an exceptional white jade conch shell as Lot 2960 on 1st December 2010. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO INTERNET BIDDING PERMITTED ON THIS LOT

Provenance: The Collection of James Fairfax A.C., Stanbridge Mill, Gussage All Saints, Dorset. The wonderful spiral decoration on this meiping is exceptionally rare. No other vase in this pattern is recorded. An alms bowl is extant in The Burrell Collection, Glasgow, no. 38/462 (see illustration opposite). PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO INTERNET BIDDING PERMITTED ON THIS LOT

For a thorough discussion of Daoist liturgical robes see Verity Wilson ""Cosmic Raiment: Daoist Traditions of Liturgical Clothing"", Orientations Magazine, May 1995, pg.42-49. Provenance: Private collection, Cumbria.

Lot 299

A CHINESE BRONZE KNIFE COIN, of gently angled form with a curved end and ring handle, the upper surface with nine archaic characters, the handle with two horizontal lines, probably Warring States, 7.25"" long. Provenance: The Collection of Dr. Julian Deveron Redmill (1916-1993), and thence by descent. Probably acquired on the London Art Market in the 1950`s. This knife coin is unusually large, pointing to an early date, probably within the Warring States Period. It is very rare to find an example with so many characters on the blade. For a comparable six-character example, see Wang Yu-Chuan `Early Chinese Coinage`, 1951, plate 29.
