Benighted, first edition, light browning to endpapers, bookplate, original cloth, spine slightly darkened, dust-jacket, a little spotted, very light discolouration to spine, some minor rubbing to tips of spine and corners, but a near-fine example overall, 8vo, 1927.⁂ A superb copy of this early Priestley title, his only foray into horror and rare with the dust-jacket in such condition. Benighted was adapted into the classic James Whale-directed 1932 film The Old Dark House and has been recently re-adapted for stage.

Tolkien (J.R.R.).- Printed programme for the New College School production of The Hobbit, adapted by Humphrey Carpenter with music by Paul Drayton, 4pp., illustrations, with map by Drayton to final p., signed by Tolkien on upper cover, minor creasing, some light toning to margins of upper cover, [Hammond pp.23-24], 4to, 1967.⁂ A rare signed playbill for the second theatrical adaptation of The Hobbit.The first production of The Hobbit was performed at St. Margaret's School, Edinburgh for teachers and parents in 1953. This second production was a larger affair, performed over three nights, with the author in attendance on the final night. The play was adapted by Humphrey Carpenter and music composed by the school music teacher Paul Drayton (who also drew the map for the lower cover). Signed copies of the book were raffled off each night, Tolkien also signed copies of the programme for the performers.

His original influences were Toulouse-Lautrec and classical vase painting but the advent of Cubism helped him to develop his own distinctive style with its sparse lines and elongated figures. In 1914 he became an interpreter to the 12th Division of the British Expeditionary Force in France and spent much of his time sketching, producing these light-hearted but affectionate depictions of the British at war: marching with fife and drum, flirting with the local girls, soldiers in a bar, in camp etc.

The area is a popular mountain resort and the distillery is the highest in Japan at 850m above sea level. Traditional, small-scale, high-quality production is the aim, with wooden wash backs, small stills, and sherry casks from Spain, all contributing to the process. The environment is also ideal for whisky production, with low temperatures and high humidity. Karuizawa is the gold standard of rare Japanese whisky. The distillery closed its doors in 2011, although it had not been producing whisky for over a decade. This particular whisky from Karuizawa was distilled last 1984 in a single Bourbon Barrel #3660 for about 26 years before being bottled in 2011. It is presented in an original box. Eighteenth century half calf, covers in marbled paper, lower outer corners scratched . Spine with 4 raised bands, gilt title on leather lettering-piece. Red speckled edges. Manuscriipt owner's inscription on verso of the title-page and at the portrait, 'Ego Jovanes Baptista Ferialtus [?]', the second one dated 1702. Very rare edition of one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the Italian Seventeenth century. The work was imprinted in Venice in 1624, and subsequently reissued in 1630 and in 1655 with the only title-page changed, by scraping the original table. The copy presented here is exceptionally complete with 48 magnificent plates engraved by Odoardo Fialetti (1573-1637 / 38), pupil of Tintoretto. The author, Francesco Tensini (1579 / 81-1638) was one of the most renowned military architects of the time, and his Fortificatione is to be counted among the most complete ancient manuals of warfare engineering.

L'opera Lidoire fa parte dei dialoghi, attraverso i quali l'Autore mise in evidenza l'aspetto comico, le contraddizioni e i timori propri delle differenti classi sociali, accomunate solamente da una rara mediocrità, collocando i propri personaggi in una realtà che abbandona il quotidiano per entrare nel migliore teatro dell'assurdo.Courteline Georges. At the half-title author's autograph. Courteline was a French poet, writer and playwright, as well as a French academic. The opera Lidoire is part of the dialogues, through which the author highlighted the comic aspect, the contradictions and fears of the different social classes, associated only by a rare mediocrity, placing their characters in a reality that abandons the daily to get into the best theater of the absurd.

Dorso liscio con titolo e decorazioni impresse in oro. Elegant edition designed to describe the vicissitudes of the Kingdom of Italy from 888, the year of the coronation of Berengario I, to 1815, when Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo and consequently exiled to St. Helena. The work is illustrated by 100, splendid coloured engravings depicting the main characters of the narration.

Rara edizione originale di questa interessante opera. Bonarelli, nato a Pesaro nel 1563 e morto a Fano nel 1608, scrisse a Ferrara, diventata dominio pontificio, le sue opere più importanti tra cui questi Discorsi nei quali - parlando dinnanzi ad una accolta di eleganti e graziose gentildonne e di cavalieri - nega tutta la tradizione dell'amore unico ed eterno ed invoca l'esperienza del sensi e dei sentimenti contro Aristotele, Platone e Petrarca. 4° (189x148 mm). Preserved into the third volume of the Instituzioni, a manuscript letter dated 1875. Rare set uniformly bound and including the Opere and the Instituzioni di patologia analitica written by the Italian physician Maurizio Bufalini (1787-1875), one of the most important Italian clinicians of the nineteenth century. Bufalini is remembered for his innovative approach to medicine: among the most valid supporters of the inductive method of the clinic, he recognized the foundation of medical science as the analytical and experimental method. He was a senator and national member of the Accademia dei Lincei, as well as a member of the Accademia della Crusca.

NATHANIEL BERMINGHAM (BORN: IRELAND C.1720 F/ 1736-74) 'Portrait of Jonathan Swift, c.1774.' Head and shoulders, in white cut paper against black, wearing a curly grey wig. Oval. 11.5" (29cm) high x 8.5" (22cm) wide. The frame in carved sand gilt. With the Swift family crest and leaf-sprays. This very rare portrait by Birmingham shows in great detail the art of cut paper. Birmingham was noted for his small portraits and coats of arms, cut in paper or vellum. He headed to London c.1774 and exhibited his works at the Society of Artists. Including a portrait in cut paper of The Duke of Gloucester, his address was at 'Mr. Kelly's, The Cane Shop near Temple Bar'. In 2009 The Arms of John Boyle, 5th Earl of Cork and Orrery (1707-1762) was offered by Christie's, lot 53. Also in cut paper. It was part of the Glin Castle Sale, 7th May 2009. It measured 38 x 31cm and it sold for £20,000. The Victoria and Albert Museum have a cut paper portrait of Britannia mourning The Prince of Wales. Provenance: Rushbrooke Hall, Bury St. Edmunds. Originally the home of The Jermyn Family, with the Rothschild Family taking over the house in 1938. In 2015 there was an auction of items from the kitchens of Rushbrooke Hall which included this unidentified "Picture of a Nobleman." Swift refers several times to cut paperwork in his 'Miscellanies'. He quotes in 'Dan Jackson's Picture Cut in Paper,' "Clarissa drew her scissors from the case, to draw the lines of poor Dan Jackson's Face. One sloping line cut forehead, nose and chin, A nick produced a mouth and made him grin."
