The Life of Mr.Thomas Cooke, late of Pentonville. (A Miser), third edition, engraved frontispiece of Cooke and his wife, advertisement leaf at end, frontispiece defective at upper outer corner just touching image (repaired), text rather foxed, contemporary half roan, 1814, both rubbed; and 5 others on London, 8vo et infra (7)⁂ Thomas Cooke (1725/26-1811) seems to have been the son of an itinerant fiddler. He was variously employed as a porter in a Norfolk paper factory and as an assistant to a London sugar baker. He married a rich widow, worked as an excise man and eventually bought his own sugar factory. His parsimony was notorious, however, and this work is both a graphic record of his miserliness and merciless exploitation of others, and a detailed account of his acquisition of enormous wealth. To his credit, in his will he left large legacies to a whole raft of charities. All early editions are rare with a mere 4 copies in total listed by Library Hub, and a single copy only of this third edition (BL).

The female sitter is Elizabeth Cooper, daughter of the print publisher and seller Edward Cooper. The original verse beneath read 'Beauty commands Submission as it's due / Nor is't the Slave alone that owns this true / Much fairer Youths shall this just Tribute pay / None Fate deplore, but thankfully obey'.

Woman writer.- [Behn (Aphra)] Love-letters between a nobleman and his sister; with the history of their adventures. In three parts, fifth edition, lacking divisional titles to parts 2 and 3, general title chipped (affecting inner corners of border) and laid down, some spotting and staining, mostly lightly browned throughout, preliminaries a little heavier, new endpapers, contemporary panelled calf, sympathetically rebacked, spine in compartments and with black leather label, corners worn, rubbed, 8vo, Printed for D. Brown, J. Tonson, J. Nicholson, B. Tooke, and G. Strahan, 1718.⁂ All editions are rare at auction. The work was inspired by a contemporary scandal, which saw Lord Grey elope with his sister-in-law Lady Henrietta Berkeley.

The coal-meters were licensed to verify the weight of coal sacks and type of coal contained therein.

At the end of the 18th century there was a movement in Germany to revive the ancient exercises of the Greeks, and by 1820 no school curriculum was considered complete without a course of gymnastic exercises. Pickering & R. Mason, 1852.⁂ A very good copy of a rare work. T.E. Lawrence considered Kidwelly Castle to be 'splendid', which he qualifies thus: 'The state of it is good (just ruined enough to be interesting), and although quite plain, it is very large and strong. I did not draw a plan because it was wet and late, but on my next visit I will have much photography and planning to do. Specially remarkable features were the ovens and dungeons.'.

Wilkie, 1781 § [Chester.] An Act, for better Regulating the Poor; maintaining a Nightly Watch; Lighting, paving, and cleansing the Streets, Rows, and Passages; providing Fire-Engines and Firemen, and regulating the Hackney-Coachmen, Chairmen, Carmen, and Porters, within the City of Chester, ink mark to title, lightly browned, contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, rubbed, corners worn, 1772, 8vo (2)⁂ Thomas Gilbert (c.1720-98), land agent, lawyer, and poor law reformer, devoted much of his mature years, certainly from 1765, to the cause of poor law reform. Despite making attempts at legislative progress during the 1760s and '70s none actually reached the statute book. Eventually, the Act which became known as Gilbert's Act was enacted in 1782.The second item is a second printing, in different format, of the Private Act 2 Geo. III.c.45 first printed in 1761. Both printings seem to be rare with only 4 UK copies listed of this 1772 edition (BL, Department of Health, LSE, and Chetham's Library in Manchester), plus 2 in America..

March, sold by B. White...and at Faversham, by the Author, [1784].⁂ With loosely-inserted typed sheet listing 'Field Meeting to Faversham, Kent, on Sunday 2nd. May 1965' led by Michael Kerney for the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, with the purpose of collecting Acicula fusca "for which this is the type of locality" and referring to both this work and Montagu's Testacea Britannica. "About a dozen other species of land and freshwater Mollusca are recorded by Walker from the neighbourhood of Faversham, and it will be interesting to see how many of these can still be found today".Also inserted is a photocopy of Kerney's article 'Non-marine Mollusca from Faversham, Kent, figures by George Walker in 1784' for the Journal of Conchology vol.29 1976.

It is rare with Library Hub recording only one copy of this first edition (Manchester Public Library). The extensive list of subscribers is almost entirely made up of Liverpool residents including the banker, lawyer and art-collector William Roscoe. The second item is one of two editions listed by ESTC, of 1774 and 1788 respectively. Both are extremely rare, ESTC lists only the British Library copy of either.

Focusing particularly upon the state of existing masts and sails, the author promotes the funding and provisioning of improvements in naval equipment, at the same time as also revealing the subtleties of the command structure and the professional expectations of the officer class in the Royal Navy. Rare, with only 2 copies on Library Hub (BL & National Maritime Museum, although third edition specified) and WorldCat adding 2 copies in America.The Royal Naval Annuitant Society had been established in 1823 to provide annuities for dependents of deceased members. Lt. Richard Bastard served in the Royal Navy from 1798-1834. Library Hub lists a few of the Society's Rules and Regulations but none earlier than 1825 (although Plymouth Library does apparently have a copy of this 1824 edition).

It is the first work of science fiction by a Scottish author.The third item is a political verse in the form of almost a running commentary on Lord Liverpool's Tory administration. Rare; Library Hub lists one copy only (BL).

A RARE AND LARGE POLYCHROME WOOD FIGURE OF THE PRINCE SHOTOKU TAISHIJapan, dated 1840 by inscriptionThe large figure depicting the semi-legendary regent Shotoku Taishi, standing with his arms folded before him, the wood treated with thick polychrome lacquer and pigments over gofun, the eyes painted behind crystal or glass. Shotoku has a long beard and his hair is tied into two knots covered by a long cloth which is draped over the head and shoulders. The prince's robe is adorned with shippo crests. The figure stands on a square base in the manner of a tatami mat and is inscribed to the base: 天保十一庚子、十月廿五日、仙臺(仙台)、御細工業、某、中川兵吉一山作之 Tempo juuichi kanoe-ne, juugatsu nijuu-go nichi, Sendai, on-saikugyo, nanigashi, Nakagawa Heikichi Issan kore o tsukuru [This is made by Nakagawa Heikichi (Hyokichi), art name Issan, a craftsman, Sendai, on the 25th of the 10th month, in Tempo 11 (1840)].HEIGHT 72.5 cmCondition: Some scattered losses and general wear. The lacquer is slightly loose and is prone to splitting. Overall the figure presents well.Prince Shotoku, or Shotoku Taishi in Japanese, is considered the founder of Buddhism in Japan. Immediately after his death around 622, stories of his miraculous achievements began to form a rich sacred biography, which in turn generated painted and sculpted icons of the statesman.

The exterior lacquered in nashiji and finely decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e to the cover with two confronting ho-o (phoenixes) with wings and tail feathers continuing over to the sides which are similarly decorated with various floral and foliate mon, some of which are variations of the kiri (paulownia) mon. The interior lacquered in nashiji and fitted with a removable compartment holding two boards similarly decorated with flowers and grasses and fitted with a suzuri (ink stone) and moon-shaped silver waterdropper (suiteki).SIZE 10.5 x 22.5 x 18.1 cmCondition: Good condition with some wear, small dents and few minor tears to silver rims, few minor age cracks.With a wood tomobako inscribed 梨子地鳳凰蒔絵、御硯箱 "Nashiji-ji hoo makie, on-suzuribako" [Suzuribako in the nashiji lacquer finish, with the design of Hoo birds].The kiri mon is one of the five major family crests in Japan, and one of the two imperial crests, along with the kiku (chrysanthemum) mon. More than 140 designs of the kiri mon exist. Originally, the paulownia seal was the private symbol of the Japanese Imperial Family, from as early as the sixteenth century. The Toyotomi clan, led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, later adopted the paulownia seal for use as the crest of his clan. After the Meiji Restoration, the seal was eventually adopted as the emblem of the Japanese government.Both the ho-o bird and the paulownia (kiri) tree are imperial symbols of Japan. According to legend, the ho-o, a bird similar to the phoenix that represents the eternal rebirth of the soul, only settles on the Kiri tree. In the hope of attracting this auspicious bird that blesses people with wisdom, health and happiness, the trees are planted in courtyards and gardens.

Provenance: British collection.Kinjo Ikkokusai III perfected the takamori-e design technique and won an award for excellence at the Kyoto Exhibition in Meiji 9 (1876). His son Kinoshita Chisai did not succeed to his father's name, which went instead to his younger brother, who became Ikkokusai IV. A RARE NOH MASK OF YASE-ONNAJapan, 19th centuryFinely carved and decorated in creamy white and polychrome pigments over wood to depict a gaunt, emaciated woman with heavy-lidded eyes and slender red lips, the eyes and mouth pierced, the back with the signature within a recessed reserve reading Kurozuru 黒鶴.HEIGHT 20 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear, a small age crack to the chin, minor flaking to lacquer around the edges.Provenance: From a French private collection.Kurozuru 黒鶴 literally means 'Black Crane'. This name is likely based on Shakuzuru ('Red Crane'), a master Noh mask carver from the Nanbokuchu period (14th century).Japanese Noh theater is magnificent and rarefied - a living Buddhist performance art more than 700 years old with roots and formal elements much older. In the 14th century, the performer-playwright and head of a performing clan family Kan'ami Kiyotsugu (1333-84) wrote the play Motomezuka (“The Sought-for Grave”), which tells the plight of a maiden who committed suicide after two young men killed each other when fighting over her. Kan'ami's son, Zeami Motokiyo (c. 1363-c. 1443), further refined both the artistic and spiritual qualities of the play. A VERY RARE ANTIQUE EROTIC SET, MEIJIJapan, early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)These sex toys, carved from multi-hued horn, known as "laughter devices," were made for practical use. Comprising one hollow dildo, which could have cotton wadding soaked in hot water placed inside it, the hot water making the dildo soft and warm. A striking toy called ´armor and helmet' (Dōkyō no yoroi-kabuto), this was worn on the penis to give it a ribbed texture, the 'armor' was worn on the shaft of the penis and the 'helmet' over the glans. In this set we can see two kinds: in one, the armor and helmets are separate; in the other, they form a single piece. There are also four examples of rings to be worn around the penis, one made from lacquered wood, two finger dildos and six metal balls. Condition: Good age-related condition with expected traces of wear and use. Minor material loss along the margins. Only one card with a crease. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands, acquired from the above. J.W.N. van Achterbergh was an important collector, expert, and patron of Dutch post-war ceramics. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world's leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Dimensions: 5.5 x 3.5 cm each In the late 19th century, Nintendo began as a playing card manufacturer, a tradition it still continues today, showcasing Japan's beauty through its decks. Hanafuda is a floral-covered card game representing different seasons with suites like plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, peonies, chrysanthemums, and maple leaves. Nature holds great significance in Japanese art, textiles, and tattooing. Hand-stenciled Nintendo cards like this one are rare, dating between 1900 and 1930. The cards were printed using the kappa-zuri technique, combining hand-stenciling and woodblock or copper plate printing. Hanafuda was once associated with illicit gambling but is now played during the Japanese New Year.

A RARE INLAID LACQUER SINGLE-CASE INRO WITH A FINE RYUSA STAG ANTLER NETSUKE, MEIJIJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Of horizontal rectangular form and oval section, bearing a lustrous roiro ground finely decorated in gold takamaki-e and aogai inlays to depict shimenava motifs, one side with three lanterns (chochin), the other with a paper charm and a pine sampling, the interior of roiro and neatly divided into two sections. With a coral ojime and a Ryusa style kagamibuta netsuke carved with a design of scrolls and fitted with a shakudo plate. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small age cracks. A POWERFUL AND RARE WOOD TONKOTSU IN THE FORM OF A HANNYA MASKUnsigned Japan, 19th centuryWell carved as a Hannya mask for the role of Kiyohime, with bulging eyes double-inlaid in pale and dark horn, the mouth wide open in a ferocious scream showing tongue and teeth flanked by sharp fangs, the hair neatly incised and wrinkles deeply carved, the interior of the hinged cover carved with a striker, forming a himotoshi underneath.LENGTH 9.6 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear, light scratches. A small repair to the edge of the cover. The Hannya mask represents a female serpent-demon filled with malicious jealousy and hatred. The mask is worn by the protagonist (shite) in the second acts of the Noh plays Aoi no Ue, Dojoji, Kurozaka, and Momijigari. The first two plays depict women betrayed or spurned by their lovers; the second two portray demons who first appear in human form to trap the unwary. Several traditions account for the name Hannya: the most plausible account traces the origins of the mask to the mask carver Hannyabo who was active in the late 15th or early 16th century. The bell striker, which forms the cord attachment in the present tonkotsu, indicates that this particular Hannya mask was used for the Dojoji play for the role of Kiyohime.
