Klavdi Lebedev was celebrated for his historical and genre compositions, featuring themes of Russian history of the 16th and 17th Centuries. He was especially well known for his paintings of the lives of the Boyars, of which the present lot is a superb example.Lebedev, born into a peasant family, lived and worked in Moscow and later St. Petersburg. He studied at the Stroganov Institute and Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from 1875-1881, with Perov, Sorokin, and Vladimir Makovsky, with whom his work is often compared. Lebedev later taught at the same schools from 1890, as well as the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1894-1898, where he was named an Academician from 1879, and a member of the Academy from 1906. He was also a member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) artists group as of 1891, with whom he had exhibited since 1884.Boyarina was purchased circa 1937 in Paris by Mr. Leon Leonidoff and his wife Madeleine. Leon Leonidoff was the Chief Producer of Radio City Music Hall in New York City, where he worked from 1932 until 1974. Under Mr. Leonidoff's direction, Radio City Music Hall developed into the legendary theater that it is today, known for its extravagant productions featuring orchestras, choruses, soloists, and of course, the Rockettes. Born in Dubosari, present-day Moldova, to a prominent and well-to-do Bessarabian grain dealer, Mr. Leonidoff was a legendary and widely respected figure in the New York theatre world.

Denisov (1878-1957). Colonel, major general, lieutenant general. The Cossack commander S.V. Denisov, who was active in the opposition to Soviet power in South Russia in 1918, was raised at the Lugansk stanitsa in the territory of the Don Cossack Host and, having entered military service in 1896. In the wake of the October Revolution and the disintegration of the old army, Denisov commanded a column of Cossack in rebellion against Soviet power before becoming commander of the Don Army. He resigned from that post on February 1919, when the Krug of the Don Cossack Host passed a vote of “no confidence” in him. Following his resignation, Denisov immediately emigrated. While in emigration, he lived in Turkey and Germany before settling in the United States in 1923. Denisov was a founder and active member of the Cossack Union in the US, serving as a chairman. Denisov died in Stratford, Connecticut.V.K. Vitkovskiy (1885-1978). Colonel, major general, lieutenant general. One of the most dynamic leaders of White forces in South Russia. In the White movement, Vitkovskiy participated in the great march from Jassy to Novocherkassk, commanded the 3rd Infantry Brigade and the 3rd Rifle Division of the Volunteer Army, entered the Russian Army of General P.N. Wrangel, before beign evacuated with his men from Crimea to Gallipoli. Vitkovskiy subsequently lived in Bulgaria (1921-24), as commander of the 1st Army Corps, and as a chairman of the Society of Gallipoliits, before moving to France and then, after the Second World War, to the United States.

LOT NOTESThis is Volume II in the two volume English language translation of a Russian book published in English in 1818.The set is an account of the voyage of the Russian ship Diana to Japan and the capture of it's Captain and part of the crew by the Japanese. The author and the part of the ship's crew were held captive by the Japanese for two+ years. This is a narrative of that voyage, the captivity and eventual release of the Russians. The first volume is a continuation of Golownin's account of his captivity by the Japanese. The second volume is an account by Captain P. Rikord (Imperial Russian Navy) of his successful negotiations to obtain the release of Golownin and his crew.GOLOVIN, Vasiliy Mikhailovich (1776—1831), trained at the Kronstadt Naval Academy and from 1801 to 1806 served as a volunteer in the British Navy. In 1807 he was commissioned by the Russian government to survey the coasts of Kamchatka, the Kurile Islands and Russian America.

An extremely rare George II Channel Islands silver chamber stick, maker's mark IG struck once with pellet above in an oval (Jean Gavey, Jersey, c.1715-1775), the urn form nozzle with gadrooned rim and pedestal on a dished circular base, with gadrooned border and loop side handle with reeded thumbpiece, with engraved crest, the underside with three counter form feet on fine foliate cut card mounts, 5½in. (14cm.) diameter, 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high. * This is believed to be the only known example of a Channel Islands silver chamber stick in existence, which was probably a special commission from a client who had seen such pieces in England or on the Continent. Contrary to most English examples, it does not feature a fitting for a separate snuffer.

A very rare Bilston enamel souvenir patch box with Guernsey interest, c.1780, the hinged enamel lid decorated with a central picture of a frigate flanked by the words 'A Trifle from Guernsey', within a border of laurel leaves on a white ground, the brass rimmed lid opening to reveal a mirror and a white enamel void for storage, the main body sky blue in colour, 2in. (5cm.) long.

(96.5cm.), with remnants of leather scabbard. * Provenance: Believed to have been discovered in an attic in Victoria Road, St Peter Port in the 1980s.
