Ephemera – visitors book a fine guest book produced in the style of the arts and crafts movement and with numerous entries from the early 1920s to the 1970s. Entries include the signatures of Big Chief White Horse Eagle who visited the house in 1930 when he was 108 years old and his queen Wa-The-Na as well as a fine sketch of African birds by the explorer and naturalist Capt C W R Knight. The signature of White Horse Eagle and his Queen are rare and sought after mainly because he toured the world claiming to be an ancient chief of the Osage Tribe – meeting heads of state and leading celebrities as a result. He met Hindenburg for example on a sensational tour of Germany in 1929 – having claimed to have similarly met Bismark on a visit in 1887. The problem with the Big Chief however was that he was a total fraud – his supposedly native people pointed out that he couldn’t speak a word of their language and knew nothing of their culture. Moreover he was African-American in origin and the only tribal god he subscribed to was alcohol ! Nevertheless his signature is rare and sought after by collectors of the more colourful American characters. This book is also of great interest in its style – very much reminiscent of William Morris and the arts and crafts movement.
Art and Artists – Ian Fenwick three original cartoons by Fenwick two with autograph notes signed by Fenwick dated January 1944 shortly before he was heroically killed. Each executed in line drawing with wash colour. Ian Fenwick was both a fine cartoonist a member of the original SAS and a war hero. A Major in the 1st Battalion SAS he was killed in action in June 1944 during Operation Gain – the clandestine sabotage mission south of Paris aimed at blowing up railway lines. He was killed in an attempt to rescue his men who he thought had been captured by the Germans. He attempted to take on a German column single handed but was killed instantly when his Jeep was ambushed. In civilian life he was a noted cartoonist working for Punch and other magazines. Original artwork by Fenwick is rare and highly sought after. A fine collection of 50 original cartoons by Fenwick are to be seen in the Royal Green Jacket Museum in Winchester.
WWII – German navy a rare log book of a German naval ship with a number of entries indicating that it was stationed in Norway. It covers a period from 1941-43. In good order throughout. WWII – the Nazi SS Das Schwarze Korps [The Black Corps] a bound volume of 23 issues of one of the most notorious publications issued by the Nazis the infamous newspaper of the SS. This volume includes editions of the paper from July 1935 to April 1939. It would seem therefore that this is a collection which has been subsequently bound rather than an originally issued bound edition. However the publication for obvious reasons is exceptionally rare- and of course it is full of the usual anti-Semitic and racist stuff
Gloucestershire – Forest of Dean – coal mining rare indenture on five leaves of vellum dated 1857 being a counterpart underdemise of the Whittington and Coleford High Delf veins in the Princess Royal Colliery in the Forest of Dean between William Higgins of Bristol and the Bristol and Forest of Dean Coal Co Ltd. Document in fine order with the embossed seal of the Company attached to the base of the document.
Autograph – Political – Lord Randolph Churchill autograph letter signed to Lady Jeune dated June 13th 1894 – at the very time he made his last speech in Parliament and six months before his death from syphilis. The handwriting and signature in this letter demonstrate just how ill Churchill had become by this time. A once brilliant orator and politician who could have so easily been a great Prime Minister he fell foul to disease and his health and political career suffered a long decline. By this time his speeches had become a rambling parody of the fire cracker wit of his earlier career and when he gave his final speech on Uganda at about the time he wrote this letter it was a painful failure listened to by the few who bothered to hear it with enormous pity. Letters of Lord Randolph Churchill from this period of his life are rare.
Almanack The Historical Almanack 1840. Broadside large folio approx 20x30ins featuring a large woodcut illustration of the Houses of Parliament from the Thames (before it was actually built) and 23 woodcut illustrations on the borders illustrating various important events in British history with central text in remarkably good condition considering its age and the somewhat flimsy paper on which it was printed. Rare. This is a most attractive broadside and it is unlikely that many other copies exist.
Industrial Revolution – the Bedlington Iron Foundry three fine autograph letters signed by Christopher Bedlington founder of the Bedlington Iron Works in the North East perhaps the most significant manufacturer in the early history of railways dated 1781 discussing his development of what he describes as fire engines – ie steam engines – for use in the Esholt Colliery in Northumberland : ...I have at present two first engines the conducting of and nearly completed. I wd think it a pleasure if I could by any means settle the matter in dispute to the satisfaction of the parties but that kind of business I do not like... It would seem that the business referred to here is that the existing engines in the colliery were not working properly as the other two letters refer to Bedlington’s agreement to visit the colliery and inspect the fire engines for himself and assess the materials used. At the time these letters were written steam engines were in their infancy and based on the principles developed by Newcommen. They were static enormous and largely used for the raising of water from mine shafts. They were naturally subject to considerable problems. Letters from such an early period referring to engines of this kind are excessively rare on the market

After abandoning Plain English’ in 1921 Douglas resurrected the newspaper the following year as Plain English’
Nazi Propaganda and the Britishscher Freikorps Munich – The Spirit of a German City. Bearing the stamp of Oflag VII B to inside cover. Printed in English this is a typical production of the Nazis propaganda machine which was distributed to British POWs in the hope that they could be turned to join the notorious Britischer Freikorps SS Platoon. This particular volume extols the virtues of Munich as : ...the scene of the first victims in the heroic battle for a strong Germany...the fountain of true joy of living and of pleasure-loving geniality...’ Rare.
WWII – Mosley and the British Fascists – Arnold Leese excessively rare letter sent to Leese via the German World Service deliberately unsigned (for obvious security purposes) referring to the Ritual Murder Number’ of Streicher’s notorious paper Der Sturmer : ...W is taking the necessary steps to get you a certified copy of the minutes of the court...’
WWII – the war against the Japanese rare intelligence review marked Secret and covering the immediate aftermath of WWII as it affected Indonesia – where some of the worst atrocities were committed by the Japanese against allied troops. The Review covers aspects of the military events – from the Japanese invasion and the eventual capitulation to British forces – but with fighting continuing long after the official surrender date. The report also deals with the sensitive issue of deserters particularly by Indian troops and mainly caused by the spread of venereal disease. It then deals with the desperate plight of allied POWs and internees – and refers at great length to the fact that the Japanese army was actually employed to maintain law and order particularly in Java. There is much in this document which will provide researchers with potentially new information about the immediate aftermath of WWII in this highly sensitive part of South East Asia and in particular the relationship between the allies and the defeated Japanese the rise of nationalism in Indonesia and the political steps to restore some semblance of order to the region in the wake of what happened.
WWII – Nazi Anti-Semitism The Kaiser’s Dream published by the leading anti-Semitic publishing firm Bodung Verlang featuring a large graphic showing Kaiser Wilhelm II with explanatory text. Rare. A notorious piece of Nazi propaganda. It purports to be the verbatim text of a document discovered in England by a German army officer in 1890 in which it clearly indicates that the events of WWI and the subsequent events leading to WWII were a plot by Jewish and Freemasonry interests in order to destroy Germany and therefore to allow them to achieve world domination. In order to get across its message as far as it could it was printed in three languages – English German and French. The original text was claimed to have appeared in a publication called Truth’ – which according to this pamphlet miraculously disappeared without trace.
WWII – Julius Streicher – Die Sturmer rare copy of this notorious anti-Semitic publication produced by one of the worst Jew haters in the Nazis Julius Streicher. This edition is dated April 1936 and carries the heading [trans.]’It’s never going to end’ with a front page cartoon showing a group of obviously Jewish people in a cafe with the caption [trans] They stick together these children of Satan’
