This appears to have been a ‘used’ volume. Rare. This is the original first edition of this work – which was re-titled the following year as ‘The Settler’s New Home^ or Whether to Go and Whither ?’ A fascinating insight into emigration to the USA and Canada at a time when the potato famine in Ireland and deprivations in the UK generally were forcing people to seek a better life on the other side of the Atlantic. The book provides a practical guide to emigrants: choice of ship^ where to go^ local climates etc etc.

REEL: Rare early Yawman & Erbe, Rochester, New York Automatic Dec 7th 1880 Patent fly reel in 3 7/8" diameter, light alloy ventilated drum with brass pillar drum core, makers detail stamped to face, rear central mounted linear foot (lacks screw, easy replaced) and release lever A/F, good honest condition, few seen.
REEL: Rare Hardy all brass Perfect trout fly reel 2.5" diameter wide drum, in superb condition, large/small perforations to dished face plate, white handle, Rod in Hand, straight line and bordered oval logo, strapped tension regulator with Turks lock screw, correct smooth brass foot, cross drilled and centrally bore, retaining virtually all original finish.
LURE: Ex rare 4" solid silver Gregory style fishing lure, date stamped 23 June 1864, fully scaled hollow body on central bar, intricate detail in the fin, tail and head scale pattern design by the silversmith, Victorian Date kite Mark to tail (as per image) dates this lure to 23rd June 1864, twin fins with holes for traces, central bar with rings. Silver tested and returns positive for solid silver content.This bait resembles a few others from the Birmingham and Redditch area. Similar scale patterns are illustrated in early catalogue images c 1860-80s, makers showing these lures include and especially Allcock`s, Woodfield, Laight & Co and others. Non-make reference to a silver bait. The cost and specialist work involved in the making such a lure would suggest it was not for shop retail but perhaps an exhibition piece or even factory display.
LURES: (6) Rare Wyers Freres, Redditch and Paris 3" nickel/brass Reflex Devon, maker`s name stamped to fin, pair of early Farlow London Sole skin Phantom minnows, 1 complete with flying trebles, a Hardy nickel Hogback spoon 2", Hardy 1" rolled nose early Devon with fluted tail, 1897 and a Hardy fly spoon.
LURES & WALLET: Rare S. Maw & son London leather pocket lure and cast wallet in book form, 7"x4"x1.25", maker`s oval logo to underside of lid, opens to show a 6 compartment fitted base, containing assorted lures incl. Devons, fly spoons, phantom and bait mounts and a quantity of Landem Loach, Allcock`s sole skin Devon and others in Hardy card advertising box, 6.75"x2.5" and a further tin of assorted hardy baits mounts etc.

REEL: Extremely rare Hardy "The Silex Multiplier" 2.75" diameter with external copper oil pipe, raised gear housing stamped with maker`s details, black handle, shaped white brake trigger knob, correct ribbed brass foot, rim tension regulator to ivorine dial scale, retaining virtually all black lead finish.
