Lot 70

Lot No: 70 - Ref No: 065 King Ot and Princess Lutra By Deirdre Slocombe ''I've always been fascinated by Ancient Egypt and the Moor Otters in 2017 reminded me of 'Mummies'. In my design I decided to unite the two, not as 'Mummies' housing the dead but representing 'living' personalities - hence the original idea for King Ot and Princess Lutra. I wanted to feature qualities of both otters and Dartmoor as well as Egyptian artefacts; for instance, knowing otters ate fish, frogs and eels I depicted these creatures in some form, such as the eel bangles and the fish amulet which protects against drowning. I learnt about the rare Blue Ground Beetle on Dartmoor and thought it appropriate to use in place of Egypt's sacred Scarab; the buzzard pectoral replaces the falcon-headed god Horus and the viper replaces the cobra. The panel on King Ot's back represents Dartmoor inhabitants as do the moth, butterfly and damselfly although at its top I've painted a 'Wedjet' (eye of Horus) for protection. I have three grown-up children, have lived in South Brent for about forty years and have a BA (hons) degree in Fine Art. I sometimes use my maiden name, Farrell, and have done a variety of artwork, often commissioned, which include illustration, commemorative cards and murals. I've never, however, had the chance to paint a large 3-D figure until now and am grateful and delighted to have been given this opportunity.''

Lot No: 64 - Ref No: 055 From the Heart of Dartmoor By Zoe Curley A chance meeting a few days before the collection of these otters lead me to investigate Dartmoor's 'Little Five' and so my otter took shape. An Ash Black Slug, Blue Ground Beetle and Marsh Fritillary joined the two otters; just the fifth to go. The original vision of a perching Cuckoo just didn't sit right, so the challenge of creating a bird with wings outstretched began. You can't fail to notice the five's extra companion; a Southern Damselfly perched on the youngster's head. The inclusion of this rare insect represents the importance this project. 'From the Heart of Dartmoor' evolved from two symbols of love in a simple habitat over the little one's heart. The otters and their friends represent Dartmoor, and the beauty of even the smallest of creatures. The protection and conservation of this, and other habitats, is what's important today more than ever before. As for me, I can often be found on Paignton Beach, pen in one hand and a cuppa in the other. I create images inspired by my surroundings. I'm never quite sure how my work will turn out - it truly evolves and grows just like my otters did; From the Heart.
