[Directory and Guide to Prostitutes in the Sporting District of New Orleans], [New Orleans, circa 1912], [96]pp., containing lists of ladies names and address, divided by skin colour (white, octoroon, colored), black & white illustrations and advertisements for spirits, tobacco etc., original blue printed wrappers, upper wrapper slightly creased, ink stamp to lower wrapper for New Orleans Jazz Museum, yellowing to spine, minor marks and light soiling, small 8vo, 15.1 x 11.2cm (6 x 4.5 inches), with loosely inserted card with annotation "This very rare item was bought by me at the Jazz Museum, Dumaine St., New Orleans LA: on 5th November 1966, H. Gihise[?]" The volume comprises a directory of the prostitutes of the city of New Orleans, who worked in a defined area called the Tenderloin District or Storyville. "This is the boundary in which the women are compelled to live, according to law." The women are categorized by their race - white, coloured or octoroon - then listed alphabetically. Including descriptions of various establishments e.g. "The Little Annex..., Lizette Smith, the Jolly and popular mistress of the 'Little Annex,' is certainly a lovely woman.... She has some of the most beautiful and select girls in the district, who know how to do things as you like 'em". The listings are supplemented by pages advertising restaurants, nightclubs, cigars and spirits. The Blue Book in this format was produced from 1909-1915 by Billy Struve on the 2nd floor of Lulu White's Saloon. (1)

Darton G1074(3): the first edition of 'Youthful Sports' was published in 1801, and all editions are rare. It contains descriptions of such games as: Battledore and Shuttlecock; Quoits; Blindman's Buff; Flying the Kite; Bow and Arrow; Stilts; Marbles, Peg Top; Trap Ball; Air Balloons, Dressing Dolls; Bird Nesting; Whip Top; and Badger the Bull, or Bait the Bear. Darton G649 (noting the original pine box, but listing later editions of three of the volumes: Birds, Quadrupeds, and Roman History, all 1812). A rare set. 'Natural History of 48 Birds' includes an engraving of a Dodo. (8)

*Jigsaw. Prince Lee Boo, [James Izzard, 1818?], hand-coloured engraved wooden jigsaw puzzle, with thirty-six pieces forming twelve scenes, each with printed caption below image, lightly dust-soiled, three lugs lacking and one piece supplied in facsimile, 26 x 19cm (10.25 x 7.5ins), together with a new edition of The History of Prince Lee Boo, published by Wetton, circa 1828, disbound, 12mo Hannas, pp.129-30. Extremely rare early jigsaw. The only other copy we have traced is that in the private collection of Linda Hannas; her copy is housed in the original box, which carries the (partially erased) imprint on the label. The National Library of Australia holds a similar puzzle telling the story of Prince Lee Boo, published by William Darton in 1822 (with three replacement pieces). The Harry R. Beard print collection in the V & A has an uncoloured undissected engraving by Izzard in the same format, titled 'Gulliver or the Island of Laputa', published in 1818. (1)

*Jigsaw. [Bowles's Moral Pictures, or Poor Richard Illustrated. Being Lessons for the Young and the Old, on Industry, Temperance, Frugality, etc. by the late Dr. Benj. Franklin, printed for and sold by Bowles and Carver... Published as the Act directs, 29 Sepr. 1795], engraved wooden jigsaw puzzle after Robert Dighton, twenty-four (of 25) pieces each with oval scene illustrating a proverb (except one with portrait of Benjamin Franklin), lacking edge pieces and fourth oval from left on second horizontal row, toned and slightly rubbed, with some minor surface loss, each piece 11.5 x 9cm (4.5 x 3.5ins), divided into four groups (one of ten pieces, two of five, and one of four), each in matching frames, glazed Hannas, pp.114-15 (plate 10): 'The varied and detailed scenes of town and country life make this an exceptionally interesting puzzle'. Rare: whilst copies of this engraving as a broadside, or mounted on linen and folded into cloth boards, appear at auction occasionally, the only other copy we have traced in the form of a jigsaw is that in the collection of Linda Hannas. Frolics in Fairyland, As Seen by Louis Wain, The New Double Dissected Puzzles, Making Six Pictures Dissected..., n.p., circa 1910, three double-sided colour lithographed jigsaw puzzles, each side with a captioned illustration of a classic children's tale featuring anthropomorphic cats as the characters, printed titles to upper margin: Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp/Robin Hood; The Forty Thieves/Beauty and the Beast; Sindbad the Sailor/Cinderella, occasional minor surface loss, several lugs broken or chipped, and one lug missing, each 33 x 23.5cm (13 x 9.25ins), without instructions, contained in original wooden box, mounted colour lithograph on sliding lid, lid rubbed and with vertical break Rare Louis Wain jigsaw set; we have been unable to locate another. Pinchbeck According to Act of Parliament, circa 1734, folding paper fan, the hand-coloured etched leaf showing figures promenading along a river, with an angler and a pleasure boat, and classical buildings on the right, browned and some staining, a few short splits to folds and one small hole, mounted on wooden sticks, guard sticks with carved chevron design, 25cm (10ins) Rare. Not in the Schreiber Collection. The only other copy we have traced is an uncoloured, unmounted fan leaf in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. (1)

The Home Rule Procession Broken Up, 1893, folding paper fan, the leaf chromolithographed by William Mecham ("Tom Merry") depicting a brawl in a crowded street, a cat with 'Home Rule' label attached and turnip flying through the air towards the occupants of a two-horse open carriage, and banner on left 'Let Tories Quake', trimmed to fan shape and embellished with hand-painted gilt border, a trifle rubbed in places, mounted on hand-painted ivory-backed mother-of-pearl sticks, 35cm (13.75ins), contained in gilt-decorated cardboard fan box, rubbed and a little worn Rare chromolithograph: the only copy we have traced is that held in the British Museum. We have found no other example in the form of a fan. (1)

Ten Little Nigger Boys in Rhyme and Picture, [1936], ten thick paper leaves, each with a full-page colour illustration on recto, and a black & white illustration on verso, each leaf with a cut-out head of a negro boy at the top, with varying comical expressions, first page lightly toned, original cloth-backed pictorial boards, cut-out for faces on upper cover with minor repair on verso, oblong 4to Rare: we have only traced three other copies in institutions (British Library, Oxford University, National Library of Scotland). Symes (Michael). An Account of an Embassy to the Kingdom of Ava, sent by the Governor-General of India in the year 1795, printed by W. Bulmer & Co., 1800, initial blank & half-title, dedication leaf, two folding engraved maps (larger with repaired short closed handling tear), twenty-five engraved plates (some folding), one or two plates a little close trimmed, overall toning and some damp-staining, presentation inscription 'from the author to Ed. Paul Pilcher, 1805', to half title, 20th century ownership inscription to front free endpaper, slightly later half calf, a little rubbed and scuffed, 4to Cordier, Indosinica 445. One of the best eighteenth-century accounts of Burma (Myanmar) giving authentic details of the Burmese Empire, which was then an almost unknown land. Symes's account is rich in topographical, historical and anecdotal detail. The first 288 pages provide a valuable historical account of the Ava Empire, and the final part of the work includes descriptions and illustrations of rare and curious plants. (1)

Si tratta di due missive probabilmente indirizzate allo stesso destinatario fittamente vergate e in alcune parti lacunose a causa dell’acidità dell’inchiostro che trattano di lavori del grande scienziato, allievo di Evangelista Torricelli e di Galileo Galilei. Essays by Belfast Naturalist Robert Patterson Manuscript: Patterson (Robert) Essays on Logic and Belles Lettres, 1820. A thick 4to volume containing approx. 750pp of manuscript in a clear hand. The essays were written in 1818-19 when Patterson was a student at the Belfast Academical Institution and the volume begins with a testimonial from his professor William Cairns. There are some 25 essays on varying topics such as syntax, philosophy, memory, the senses, poetry and figures of speech. As a m/ss w.a.f. Ex. Rare. * Robert Patterson (1802 - 1872) was a distinguished Belfast naturalist and businessman. At the age of nineteen he was one of the founders of the Belfast Natural History Society and he played a leading role in its affairs for the rest of his life including the establishment of Ireland's first museum to be built by public subscription. He published many learned articles and several books and was also a successful businessman, and a leader of the movement for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Among his descendants were several prominent naturalists, including the siblings Rosamond and Robert Lloyd Praeger. The present manuscript is an important insight into the studies of a prominent Irishman at a formative stage in his career.
