Pilgrim's flask. Italy, XIX century.Glass and gilded bronze.Measurements: 45 cm (height).Pilgrim flasks are small metal or glass jars, which pilgrims used in the early Middle Ages to carry home water or oil from the lamps that burned in the sanctuaries visited. They also held oil that had been placed near the relics of a martyr and even earth piously dug from around a worshipped tomb. The present case, so richly ornamented, is a magnificent example of the exuberance of craftsmanship and design. The workmanship and decorative elements elevate them above the level of utilitarian decorative art to a sculptural level. This object typology has its roots in the leather water flask carried by the pilgrim or traveler of the Middle Ages. T. Schroder in "The Gilbert Collection of Silver and Gold," traces the development of the form to late 16th century French silver specimens; although described as "demijohns," they have the same pear-shaped, elongated neck and oval section of later examples. A rare French Renaissance example, with dragon-shaped chains, engraved with the arms of King Henry III, is preserved in the chapel of the Order of the Saint-Esprit, Paris. Particularly large flasks with fine card work were produced in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. A fine example by Anthony Nelme, dated 1715, is in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth, Derbyshire. Another bearing the arms of John, 1st Duke of Marlborough, by John Goode is in the collection of Earl Spencer, Althorp, Northamptonshire. Contemporary engravings, such as Martin Engelbrecht's depiction of the large silver buffet in the Rittersaal at the Berlin Schloss, circa 1708, indicate that they were arranged on side buffets during formal banquets. Placed in wine cisterns, they also served to decant wine.

Other examples of bowls displaying this scheme are a Basin dedicated to Qaytbay in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, a basin dedicated to Nasir al-Din Sidi Muhammad, son of Saif al-Din Uzbak, Atabek of Qaytbay, in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv.no.206.1892) and a bowl in the M.C. Lot 231

A fine and rare pair of repeating flintlock pistols from the personal armoury of Sikander Jah, Asaf Jah III, Nizam of Hyderabad (reg. 1803-29) Chidambaram, Pondicherry, dated AH 1214/ AD 1799-1800the steel barrels of circular form becoming multi-faceted towards the breech, decorated in gold inlay with vegetal motifs and cartouches containing inscriptions detailing a stylised description of the place of manufacture, the wood stocks mounted in silver engraved with foliate decoration, gilding to brass elements of mechanism, engraved inscriptions to receivers each 45 cm. long(2)Footnotes:ProvenanceSikander Jah, Asaf Jah IIIPrivate Dutch collection, acquired from Henk Visser. The Henk Visser Collection.Inscriptions: ya hazrat-e 'abbas-e'ali!/.... (?), 'O His holiness 'Abbas, son of 'Ali!', sanah 1214 hijri, 'The year 1214 of the hijra (1799-1800)', sarkar-e sekandar jah bahadur, 'Sarkar Sekandar Jah Bahadur'Repeating flintlock pistols made in India are exceptionally rare. The few that exist are copies of European weapons, either of Indian Manufacture, or made by Europeans working in India. One centre of European production was the French colony of 'Chalembrom' or Chidambaram, where an arms manufactory developed a system for repeating flintlocks where tubes below the barrel retained enough powder and balls for twenty shots. Such weapons are well attested from the armoury of the Nizams of Hyderabad such as a long gun of the same date as the present lot also made at Chidambaram in the collection of the National Rifle Association Museum, Fairfax, Virginia (Road to American Liberty Gallery, case 5). Other examples of long guns produced at Chidambaram are in the Royal Collection (RCIN90672 and RCIN90673), and the Musée de l'Armée, Paris (nos. M665-6). The present lot is the only known pair of pistols from Chidambaram. Below the barrel are two additional tubes for gunpowder and bullets. The barrel mechanism rotates when released by the lever in front of the trigger, depositing the round and charge in the breech for the next shot and cocking the action. Sikander Jah was the third Nisam of Hyderabad and during his reign was responsible for building the Rambagh temple in Attapur, an act which symbolised the communal harmony between the Muslim rulers and their Hindu subjects in Hyerabad. This pistols were made for him before his accession and the adoption of the title Asaf Jah III.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 222

A rare silver-mounted gold-koftgari steel repeating flintlock sporting gun and bayonet from the personal armoury of Tipu Sultan, by Sayyid Dawud Haidernagar, dated AH 1800/AH 1785-86the barrel of 20 bore, the first part polygonal, thereafter rounded, the silver foresight surrounded by interlaced vines in gold, an undulating vine around the muzzle, lug to one side for socket bayonet, the polygonal section profusely decorated in gold koftgari with eight panels of bubri pattern and two inscriptions, the first with the date and place of manufacture, the second with maker's name, all interspersed by floral vines, three lobed cartouches containing the 'Haydar' control mark at the point closest to the breech, three silver ramrod pipes containing silver-mounted wood ramrod to one side, foliate engraved lock, the steel lock plate engraved with floral interlace with two inscriptions in gold, the 21 shot repeating breech mechanism with gilt copper parts chased with foliate interlace, the two rounded chambers for shot and powder terminating in a gilt-brass base cover for the powder magazine release in the form of a tiger head engraved with bubri motifs surmounted by foliate motifs, the carved wooden stock with silver side and butt plates chased with floral sprays, the former with rack number '82' in Arabic, the latter containing a sprung trap for bayonet released by push button in the form of a flowerhead, the wood stock carved with foliate motifs around the barrel tang and inlaid with silver wire forming scrolling tendrils and foliate motifs, silver trigger guard with rack number '82' in Arabic, together with companion steel bayonet, the socket decorated in gold with an inscription detailing the same date and place of manufacture surrounded by bubri motifs 140 cm. long, the bayonet 14.9 cm. long(2)Footnotes:ProvenanceMajor Thomas Hart of the East India Company, acquired in the days following the siege of Seringapatam, and thence by descent until sold by the family in March 2019. Inscriptions: zarb-e HYDR (sic) [Haydar] negar 1200, 'Struck (i.e. Made in) Haidarnegar 1200 (1785-6)'; Signed, fadavi sayyid dawud, 'The devoted Sayyid Dawud'; the 'Haydar' control mark. The present lot is a rare example of a repeating long gun, though it is very closely related to another repeating gun from Tipu Sultan's armoury now in the Royal Armouries (see Robin Wigington, The Firearms of Tipu Sultan 1783-1799, Hatfield, 1992, pp. 45-48, no. TR3, plates 3a-e.), and another from George IV's Armoury at Carlton House (CH AA 540). Whilst almost all extant examples of firearms from Tipu's armoury are in excellent condition, the present lot was acquired in a damaged state following the battle, and had clearly been subjected to musket fire. It is therefore possible to surmise that, rather than being seized from the armoury after the battle, it was collected from the battlefield, and may even have been about the person of the Sultan at the time of his death. This opinion is further supported by the damage to the bayonet, which could not have occurred whilst in storage in the butt, implying that it must have been fitted to the muzzle and in use when damaged. The gun has since been professionally restored to return it to its original condition, the most significant work being the replacement of a fragment of the trigger guard, and the base cover for the tubular powder magazine release which has been expertly copied from the example on the gun from George IV's armoury. Of all the firearms from the personal armoury of Tipu Sultan which have come up for sale, this is the only example which includes the original fitted socket bayonet which is also inscribed 'Haidernagar' and dated AH 1200. When not in use, the bayonet can be neatly stored in the sprung trap within the butt. Tipu had a great interest in all things mechanical and it is likely that this innovation was introduced from Europe by one of his French technicians (see Wigington, 1992, p. 33 for a discussion of these short bayonets or 'sangin'). The present lot is also of increased interest in that it is one of only two known examples produced at Haidernagar (for the other see Wigington, 1992, pp. 75-8), and the only example made by Sayyid Dawud. Haidernagar was the new name given to Ikkeri in Bednore by Tipu's father Hyder Ali when he conquered it in 1763 and made it his capital. Interestingly our gun was made in AH 1200 which was the last year Tipu Sultan used the hijra date, after which he introduced the mawludi calendar based on the birth of the Prophet in AD 572 rather than his migration from Mecca to Medina in AD 622. The gold 'Haidar' control mark or 'H' in Arabic which appears at the back of the breech on all three upper barrel flats signifies that the gun was produced in one of Tipu's workshops. According to Wigington, control marks inlaid with gold en suite with the decoration of the gun, such as on the present lot, only appear on Tipu's personal firearms. Those in munition quality arms would have been filled with brass or left plain (see Wigington, 1992, p. 15).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 329

An extremely rare and fine example of the Order of the Propitious Star of the Punjab (Kaukab-i-Iqbal-i-Punjab), INSTITUTED BY MAHARAJA RANJIT SINGH, SECOND CLASS, AWARDED BY THE SIKH COURT TO IMPORTANT COURTIERS, DIPLOMATS OR ENVOYS Lahore, dated [VS] 1894/AD 1837in the form of a radiating star in gold, in the centre a circular portrait of Maharajah Ranjit Singh seated on a chair holding a flower, in gouache and gold on paper under glass, the radiating arms consisting of five broad arms ending in a crescent shape and each inlaid with free-formed sectional tablecut diamonds, these interspersed with five narrower curved arms each inlaid with a principal tablecut diamond and tipped with a brilliant green cabochon emerald, the upper broad arm with small gold suspension loop below a gilded and enamelled bell- or parasol-shaped suspension, topped by a larger gold suspension ring, the reverse with a central roundel containing three lines of Punjabi text in nasta'liq script and the date in gold on a green ground, the broad arms with stylised floral motifs in gold on a green ground, the narrow arms cross-hatched in red enamel, in modern fitted case 9.4 cm. high overall; width 5.2 cm.; painting 20 mm. diam.; weight 57.8g.Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Spink & Son Ltd., London, 1965 (see below).Private collection, USA, acquired from Spink in 1965.Private collection, UK. PublishedSpink & Son Ltd., Numismatic Circular, 73 (September 1965), no. 5442 (illustrated). The inscription on the reverse reads:sri maharajah dehraj maharajah ranjit singh bahadur sat sri akal sahai 1894. 'Sri Maharajah Dehraj Maharajah Ranjit Singh Bahadur, may the Eternal Lord help him, [VS] 1894'.The date is Vikram Samwat 1894, which is equivalent to AD 1837.It is suggested in some sources that this Order, the Propitious Star of the Punjab (Kaukab-i-Iqbal-i-Punjab), was instituted in commemoration of the marriage of Ranjit Singh's grandson, Nau Nihal Singh. What is clear, however, is that in a more general sense, Ranjit Singh had become fascinated by the idea of European medals and orders, as a result of the well-known profusion of British and French officers and other figures at Lahore and in the Punjab more widely. Sir Henry Fane's medals had attracted the Maharajah's curiosity when he arrived at the court in 1837 for the marriage of Nau Nihal Singh (quoted in S. Stronge (ed.), The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, London 1999, p.229). General Allard, the French General in Ranjit Singh's service, also wore the Legion d'Honneur (instituted by Napoleon). In some accounts it was Fane who then suggested that medals be introduced at court. Other sources say that it was Captain C. M. Wade, Political Agent at Lodhiana, who developed the rules for granting the awards. But it was decided to make three fixed awards - the highest for Princes, the second class (as seen in our example) for 'relatives and brotherhood' of the Maharajah and the third for high dignitaries, colonels, and those providing honourable service. These would be differentiated by the quality of the stones: respectively, diamonds, diamonds and emeralds, or emeralds only. The recipient of our Order is unknown but its quality is of that intended for presentation to courtiers, sardars, governors of provinces, General officers, diplomats and envoys (see T. McClenaghan, Indian Princely Medals: a Record of the Orders, Decorations and Medals of the Indian Princely States, pp. 11-18; also discussed in Maharaja Ranjit Singh: First Death Centenary Memorial, Amritsar 1939, pp. 94-96).The portrait depicts Maharajah Ranjit Singh holding a flower, seated in one of the characteristic European-style chairs often seen in Sikh portraits (and here with the distinctive loop in the arm where it meets the backrest, as noted by Toor (for a painting of circa 1830-32 depicting Ranjit Singh with Hira Singh, in a similar pose and in such a chair, see D. Toor, In Pursuit of Empire: Treasures from the Toor Collection of Sikh Art, London 2018, pp. 80-81; see also another in the Kapany Collection, illustrated in S. Stronge, op. cit., p. 74, fig. 79). The present depiction seems to be unique amongst the known Orders (for which see below) in portraying the Maharajah full-length.Examples of these orders are very rare. A very similar medal, of the second class, which was presented to Lord Auckland in 1838, is now in the Sheesh Mahal Museum and Medal Gallery in Patiala (illustrated in S. Stronge (ed.), op. cit., p. 82, fig. 90). This has floral decoration on the reverse rather than an inscription.Another, of the third class, said to have been formerly owned by Duleep Singh, and which was sold at Christie's in 1981, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv.no.IS.92-1981; illustrated in J. Guy, D. Swallow (edd.), Arts of India: 1550-1900, London 1990, p. 191, fig. 166).Two, of the third class, presented to the Political Agent General Henry Charles van Corlandt, are also in the Sheesh Mahal Gallery, Patiala. One, presented to Sir Frederick Currie, Bt. (1798-1875), who drew up the peace treaty after the First Anglo-Sikh War, appeared at Christie's, Islamic Art, Indian Miniatures, Rugs and Carpets, 28th & 30th April 1992, lot 138 (illustrated in the catalogue), and now in the collection of Gurshuran and Elvira Sidhu, San Francisco: illustrated in S. Stronge, op. cit., p. 187, fig. 215; see also note, p. 230). This had a miniature portrait in a more European style, after Emily Eden's portrayal), had fish and floral motifs on the reverse, and was lacking the bell and suspension loops.Another, one of a group of medals and swords presented to Colonel Sir Claude Martine Wade (1794-1861), was offered at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 28th October 2020, lot 86, also dated VS 189[4]/AD 1838, but with the painting defaced or damaged, and with a cream and red ribbon. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The final colophon says that it was commissioned by Aqa Muhammad Sadiq Shirazi with supervision by Haji Mirza Mutallib in the workshop of Aqa Mirza Muhammad Baqir and copied by Mirza Muhammad son of Aqa Mirza 'Abdullah known as Tabib (physician) and pen-named Shahid Shirazi in Safar 1275 (September-October 1858).
