RARE REGENCY MAHOGANY SLIPPER-MAKER'S WORK TABLE EARLY 19TH CENTURY the removable lift-off tray top revealing a three quarter gallery and compartmented interior, above frieze drawers to both short sides, raised on tapered end supports and downscrolling legs ending in brass caps and castors and united by a turned stretcher, with neoclassical gilt metal mounts throughout; containing a quantity of 19th century slipper-making tools and materials, leather soles, and wood lasts some stamped I THORPE/ STAFFORD and F. MACKIEDimensions:59cm wide, 87cm high, 42cm deepProvenance:Provenance: John George Joicey Bequest CollectionNote: Note: Women in the 18th and 19th centuries were expected to exhibit their needleworking skills in a variety of ways by making both decorative as well as useful items. The embroidery of slipper uppers became a widespread domestic pastime for the upper and middle classes, as slippers were usually worn by ladies at home. Patterns could be purchased or taken from magazines, and when the embroidered uppers were completed, they would be taken to a shoemaker for finishing. In 1847 the cost of making up a pair of worked slippers was 14 shillings, about the same price as a pair of ready-made French slippers. Not many people would have had the skill or equipment to undertake the whole process from start to finish, making the present work table so rare. The present table would appear to be a one-off, made and outfitted for an accomplished amateur slipper maker.

The clay envelopes contain a number of pre-baked accounting tokens, which were used in commercial and stock-taking transactions. Placing the tokens inside the bulla greatly enhanced the honesty of the transaction, as the bulla would have to be broken or crushed to reveal its contents.

Lot 113

A GEORGE III FIGURED MAHOGANY AND CROSSBANDED SERPENTINE CHEST ALMOST CERTAINLY BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE OR JOHN COBB, CIRCA 1770 With solid mahogany drawer linings 89cm high, 109cm wide, 61cm deep overall Fitted with 'S' pattern escutcheons, this fine quality chest has a rare constructional element that points to Chippendale's authorship, the use of S-pattern keyholes, this detail is almost unique to him. In his 1768 account to Lady Shelburne, Chippendale mentioned that a commode table has 'very good spring and tumbler locks and S-bitted keys' (Gilbert, op. cit., vol. I, p. 253, and vol. II, p. 147, fig. 267). The intriguing asymmetry of the S-shaped brass escutcheon would have been Chippendale's primary objective, though the encumbrance would also have minimally increased the level of security of the lock. This keyhole pattern has very occasionally been recorded on furniture attributed to Chippendale's competitor John Cobb, for example on the commode sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 19 April 2001, lot 148. However, nearly all occurrences are on furniture attributed to Chippendale.

Lot 22

It has both cross-banding and feather-banded decoration and retains its original Vauxhall mercury silvered bevelled and decorated mirror plates. The handles and metalwork are all original. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, abrasions and repairs consistent with age and use. There is a small scorch mark to the side edge of the left door. Some old repairs, replacement to veneer and moulding in sections as expected, with some overpainting to some veneers including to construction cracks on the mirrored doors and around the brass handles. Drawer runners have variously been tended to over time to operate well as expected for age. An additional lock/ catch fitting to the door remains in position, the catch is not operating. Where there was a previous keyhole/ escutcheon for it this has been neatly veneered over to match. It appears to be of the same or very similar date to the operating door lock. Each of the interior drawers has two small central holes to the underside, perhaps from their construction. There are two keys that operate the door and the drawers. There is some small evidence of old worm as expected for a piece of this age. There are no visible additional holes to the drawers to suggest the current handles are replacements.
