Lot 620

Oglaigh na hEireann (Irish Republican Army). Special Communique issued by the Army Council, dated 10 September 1941. Tall narrow folio, 4 pp (single folded sheet), one corner frayed without loss. A remarkable document, stating that Stephen Hayes, Chief of Staff of the Irish Republican Army, has been arrested [by the IRA itself], charged with treachery and conspiracy to betray the Republic, imprisoned and sentenced to death, and that he has 'expressed a desire to make a complete confession'. The remainder of the document is taken up with his alleged confession, which states that he had discussions with Dr. James Ryan, Minister for Agriculture, [Garda] Chief Superintendent Martin Lynch and others about IRA plans and activities. It claims that Dr. Ryan incited the IRA to carry out the arms raid on the Magazine Fort, so that the Government could move against certain Irish Army officers whom it wished to remove, that he encouraged the IRA to raid banks for funds, and much else. * Hayes escaped from IRA custody and issued his own account of these events (published in full in 'The Bell'), alleging that his 'confession' was secured by torture. The truth of the whole affair was never fully cleared up, but it seems likely that there was some contact between Hayes and Dr. Ryan and others, in the general context of divisions within the IRA about Sean Russell's bombing campaign in England. This IRA statement was suppressed and is rare. (1)

Republican: Militaria, A rare 1919-21 War of Independence Mauser 'Peter the Painter' Pistol, with wooden holster (converting to stock) marked 'Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf A. Neckar', serial number: 172760. (1) Provenance: Joe Kelly (O'Kelly) Ballaghaderren, Adjutant of 4th Battalion East Mayo Brigade (which incorporated several companies in West Roscommon), a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. O'Kelly and Alec McCabe stole a car out of a garage in Ballaghaderreen Easter Monday night and headed toward Tubbercurry in Sligo in order to muster men and gather them together for show of force. The attempt proved futile as they had gotten only a few miles out of town when the car broke down. Seeing headlights on the road and assuming it was British transport, the two parted company, each making his way to his own home turf. O'Kelly was arrested after the Rising for his Sinn Féin sympathies and sent to Her Majesty's Prison at Lewes on the 20th of May. He was later sent to "The Irish University", Frongoch. As part of Lloyd George's appeal to American sympathies (he needed their support in World War I), Kelly was released seven months after arrest. It was a decision the Crown was soon to regret. In 1917 O'Kelly was again arrested after his return from County Longford, where he had helped with the Joe McGuinness election. While walking down the street in Ballaghaderreen, two Constables grabbed him and announced they were taking him to the barracks. He drew his pistol and in the ensuing scuffle, the two policemen were shot---although not seriously. Joe was sent to Dublin for trial and from thence to Dundalk where, at the time, hunger strikes were taking place. After three weeks on hunger strike, Joe was released and returned "back to his old post as secretary of the Sinn Féin Club and Volunteer organiser."   Joe sailed across the Irish Sea and became active as a gun-runner in Liverpool: purchasing, storing and shipping arms to Ireland. He also participated in the burning of the Liverpool docks on 28 November 1920. Kelly took the Anti-Treaty side during the Civil War and was arrested near Ballaghaderreen by troops under Alec McCabe on 25 August 1922. He was taken to Sligo gaol from which he escaped in mid-October. In late October he was named O/C of the Flying Column because Seamus Mulrennan had been killed. His leadership was short-lived. He was recaptured at Markree Castle on 14 November 1922. Four decades later he was elected chairman of the Commemorative Committee that erected the monumental Elphin IRA statue. Kelly died in 1966 *The Western People, "Service in Ballaghaderreen" by John McPhillips, 19 September 1964.

Lot 638

An original Army Issued 'Blueshirt' Tunic, in blue canvas with double pleated pockets, black buttons, and scrimped end, some wear, a rare survivor. (1) Provenance:  Co. Waterford Family by descent. Note: The 'Blueshirt' uniform was seen as associating the movement with European shirted movements. Because of the ambiguous reputation of the 'Blueshirts' not many of these outfits have been preserved. Under Gen. Eoin O'Duffy's leadership its direction became increasingly erratic. The remnants of the organisation went to Spain with O'Duffy in 1936. * A historical item of enormous interest.

Illustrated. A photo-certificate issued by the Wildenstein Institute, Paris was issued for this work.Private Collection Guernsey. The primitive style of this Expressionist painter is perhaps best epitomised by the many portraits he painted of Hanka (Anka). These hang in the major art galleries, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art and the London Tate. In this sketch, as with Klimpt, it has been drawn with a very light pencil, so the positioning of the frame to avoid too much reflection, is critical for easy viewing.Madame Zberwoska was the daughter of a Polish aristocrat who, with her husband, arrived in Paris on 1914 with both becoming very close to the artist, her husband Leo was his main agent whilst she remained his primary model, until his early death aged only 35. It is likely therefore that this drawing was executed only a few years before his death. Other artists who painted her include Utrillo, Derain and Fujita. Modigliani drawings are both uncommon and expensive, so given its excellent Provenance and Literary references this is a rare chance to acquire a work by an artist now eagerly sought.***CONDITION REPORT***Paper evenly discoloured with further darker damp spots, looks very flat so thought to be laid down, signature lower right corner, housed in a later card mount and modern glazed gilt frame, various Exhibition labels verso.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. PEDRO, D. (Conde de Barcelos).- NOBILIARIO | DE D. PEDRO | CONDE DE BARCELOS | HIJO DEL REY D. DIONIS | DE PORTVGAL. | ORDENADO Y ILVSTRADO | COM NOTAS Y INDICES | POR IVAN BAVTISTA LAVAÑA | CORONISTA MAYOR DEL REINO | DE PORTVGAL.- En Roma: Por Estevan Paolinio, 1640.- [14 (i. e. 12)], 402, [36], 46, [7, 1 br.] p.: 1 frontispício gravado; 40 cm.- E., D. Pedro, Count of Barcelos (1287-1354), natural son of King D. Dinis I, a prominent figure in peninsular medieval culture. We owe him the compilation of the songs of the Galician-Portuguese troubadours, the “General Chronicle of Spain”, from 1344 and the “Book of Lineages” whose Quarto or Nobiliário Book we find here in its rare original edition (the second was published in Madrid, in 1646). The four parts of the “Book of Lineages” (only fragments of the second and third books have reached us) were only published in the 19th century, by Alexandre Herculano, in the collection “Portugaliae Monumenta Historica, Série Scriptores”. The structure of the copy develops as follows:. 1 - Allegorical frontispiece engraved in copperplate print (with some restorations); 2 - Title page (with old ownership erased); 3 - Text «Al lector», signed by printer Estevan Paolinio (1 f.); 4 - Prologue by Count D. Pedro (1 f.); 5 - Index of titles I, II and III (1 f., wrongly bound before the dedication); 6 - Dedication to Manuel de Moura Corte-Real, 2nd Marquis of Castel Rodrigo, signed by Juan Baptista Lavanha (2 f., last with blank back); 6 - Prologue by Count D. Pedro (f. +5); 7 - Text, starting in paragraph 16 of title III (p. 1 to 402); 8 - Pequena nota sobre a continuação do Nobiliário (1 f., with blank verso); 9 - Indice de los apellidos [e títulos] deste nobiliario (4 f.); 10 - Indice dos nomes propios dos varoes deste nobiliario (13 f.); 11 - Notas del Marques de Montebello al Nobiliario del Conde D. Pedro (p. 1 to 46); 12 - Tabla de los apellidos, y solares... (4 f.). Carefully washed copy, with some restorations on the final pages, occasional slight stains, missing the half-title, but preserving the “Notas del Marqves de Montebelo” and the final “Tablas” that are missing in most known copies. Interesting handwritten note at the bottom of the last printed page: It cost 4:500 rs. in Jan. from 1693. Recent binding, full natural sheepskin, with blind tooling on the covers and gold florets between the sectionss of the spine. Samodães, 2366. Palau, 133210.

S . in Christo Patrem & | Dñm nostrum Dñm Leonem . X. | Pont. Maximum. | [gravura xilográfica com as armas de Portugal].- Romæ: impressa per Iacobum Mazochium, [9 de Agosto do] 1513.- [6] f.; 21 cm.- E., Very rare original edition of an important letter addressed by King D. Manuel I to Pope Leo proudly announcing the recent successes of Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) in India and the East Indies, with particular emphasis on the conquest of Malacca in 1511. The small leaflet consists of a single section with six leaves (A6 signatures), with 11 printed pages (the last one blank) and the following colophon at the end: Romæ printed per Iacobum Mazochium .9. Augusti. A second edition of this same epistle was published in Vienna, Austria, on September 16th (just 36 days after the first), by the printers Hieronymus Vietor & Johannes Singriener. The copy, slightly cropped, but very clean, has a small central flaw on the title page, repaired on the back, without loss of support; the same flaw, with less extension, is repeated in the next leaf. Full blue morocco binding, probably from the 20th century, signed: Bound by Zaehnsdorf. London. England. (workshop active between 1842 and 1947). Covers with triple square fillet and the Manueline coat of arms, in the centre, gold engraved; gold stipple on the thickness of the boards and gilt edges. The rear board has a pocket, possibly for storing a document, but it is empty. We are not aware of the existence of any copy in mainland Portuguese libraries (public or private), having only found two copies of the same edition in the Public Library and Regional Archive of Ponta Delgada (quotas: Safe 110 RES and JC/ AR.2 A/390 RES), the second of which belongs to the José do Canto Collection. Library of Congress (for the only copy referenced outside Portugal), DP605. M357 1513.
