Lot 644

A rare and possibly unique Middlesbrough circa.1886-1890 match worn jersey, with button up collar and front with embroidered badge inscribed "M.F.C" ERIMUS, the cuffs are polka dot similar to the collar, heavy, white wool, manufactured by E. Banks, shirt maker Middlesboro.    There is a little evidence of age related wear, the shirt shows areas of brown spotting all over, one L-shaped tear on right breast which has been repaired, no other holes or moth damage is apparent. Overall, for the age of the shirt it is in excellent condition.     We would imagine that this is the oldest Middlesboro shirt that survives and possibly the oldest example of a shirt from a League club still in one piece. We believe that it dates from between 1886 and 1890, when they changed to a blue shirt, before another change back to white up to 1899 which is when they finally turned professional permanently and adopted more or less the red that they are famed for today. Born originally in 1876, the Northeast Club had tried three other fetching colour combinations before this fine piece saw the light if day. I find it fascinating that this actually bears a badge beautifully embroidered on the breast pocket with the MFC logo, so I would also imagine that the shirt could have held some special significance to either Club or player. The trim is exceptional, a blue and white polka dot round the collar and buttons to complement the light blue needlework on the badge and made from flannelette like some Victorian dress shirt which, without the badge it could well be mistaken for.

A rare and important plaque presented to Jules Rimet, 1931 by the French Football Association,  presented to the 'Father of the World Cup' Jules Rimet by the French Football Federation in July 1931, the plaque inscribed FFFA, En Témoignage Affectueux, á Son Président, Monsieur Jules Rimet, Officier De La Légion D'Honneur, Juillet 1931, VIS ANIMI CVM CORPORE CRESCIT, the plaque, cast with a scene of a football match above a pedestal supporting a football flanked by Laurel and oak leaves, signed by the artist Abel Le Fleur, inset with a leather easel frame, 15 3/4 by 11 3/4 in. (40 by 27.8cm) The award was presented in recognition of the work of Jules Rimet as President of the French Football Federation (FFF) and his 10th anniversary as President of FIFA. Rimet worked tirelessly to being about the inaugural World Cup held in Uruguay in 1930, the year before this presentation. This plaque was designed by the Abel La Fleur who had also been responsible for the design of the World Cup trophy, which was later to become known as the Jules Rimet Trophy. Jules Rimet (1873-1956) became President of the FFF in 1919 and President of FIFA in 1921. Rimet has been described as a diplomat, persuader, sometimes intransigent, but always devoted to the game of football. He remained President of the world governing body until 1954. In 1928 at the Amsterdam Olympic Games, where Uruguay retained their Olympic title in the football competition, it was agreed that a World Cup Tournament should take place. Being double Olympic champions - and effectively World Champions - Uruguay offered to host the event which in 1930 also coincided with the celebration of their 100th year of independence as a nation. Uruguay even paid the travelling expenses of the teams who made the journey to South America to take part. A new stadium was built in Montevideo (constructed in just 8 months!) and perhaps, fittingly, the host nation was crowned the first World Champions, defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final. This plaque is a poignant piece of memorabilia relating to the 'Father of the World Cup' an his remarkable legacy.

A rare white-metal Breitling Foot Ball Chronograph presented to 1954 World Cup Final referee William Ling, the case inscribed W. LING, ENGLAND, WORLD CUP 1954, inoperable It is believed the stopwatch was presented by F.I.F.A. to English referee William Ling to commemorate the Englishman taking charge of the 1954 World Cup Final. In the match played on 4th July 1954 at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, West Germany defeated the pre-match favorites Hungary 3-2   The case is marked and scuffed he watch movements have corroded and the watch is not functioning. It has been looked at by the watchmakers at Breitling in Bern Switzerland, and vendor was informed that it could not be restored  The 1954 World Cup final played between Hungary and West Germany, known as "the Miracle of Bern", is undoubtedly one of the most notable and historically significant football matches of all time. It was full of drama and, even to this day, the controversy persists with accusations of match-fixing, continued claims of multiple errors by officials.  In the middle of the pitch was the English FIFA referee William (Bill) Ling. After he retired in 1955, he and his wife moved to Canada which at that time certainly would not be mistaken as a footballing nation. Settling in a small town in the province of New Brunswick and spending some time at a second property in Nova Scotia meant that global footballing lore, legend, and infamy would be unlikely to ever follow them. So William, his wife, and this watch -- a beautiful piece of one of football's most significant moments -- slipped into obscurity. In fact, it wouldn't be until now, nearly 70 years later, that this item would ever be seen by the public. After William's death in 1984 in New Brunswick, he was survived by his wife, who would live for a couple of decades longer. It was upon her passing that their estate went to the highest bidder at auction in a small town in Nova Scotia. There, a pair of local antique shop owners would be blown away by the items they found amongst the Lings' possessions. The current owner of this watch visited the antique dealers to buy the watch from them.

Abstract studio glass sculpture with multicolor sommerso technique and organic form, by David Goldhagen (American, 20th C). Etch-signed near base and dated 1(?)/99. David Goldhagen’s sculptural forms and massive hand blown glass platters are distinguished by his unique style. His painterly approach to art glass marries bold colors to brilliant, clear crystal in a clean, modern style. Using traditional glassblowing methods thousands of years old, David Goldhagen creates each piece individually, working with molten glass at temperatures in excess of 2000°F. His pieces capture a palette that moves from subtle to bold by the incorporation of bits of colored glass made from various mixtures of metallic oxides and rare earth elements, such as silver, cobalt, gold, copper, dichroics and others. Each piece begins as a gathering of molten clear glass on the end of a five foot blowpipe. Colors are then meticulously layered and manipulated on the surface, creating intricate patterns and movement within the sculpture. Size: 13 x 3 1/2 x 9 1/4 in.

1986 Nissan 300ZX Z31Reg. no. E660 CNLChassis no. JN10HGZ31U0030368Engine no. VG30-071737Transmission: ManualMileage: 69,913MOT: Expired For a period of time the world forgot about 1980s Japanese sports cars, but these are now coming back with a bang onto the classic car market. The first generation of 300ZX, the Z31, was built from 1983 - 1989, offering buyers that typical retro sports car wedge shape with iconic pop-up headlights. With a drag coefficient of just 0.31 and Nissan’s first mass produced V6, the VG30, the car had good performance for the era. The 2+2 Coupe in 1986 featured some pre facelift parts but also some older parts as the model evolved, making it a unique year for these cars. This version of the Z car featured cruise control, electric mirrors and electric windows. This example with the 3-litre V6 NA engine, features a manual gearbox and glass T-top. It has been stored in a barn for a number of years whilst having sporadic work carried out. The paintwork has taken sun damage over the years, quite typical with a red car, but the underside looks to be solid having had some recent welding and the bodywork is quite straight. It has done very little mileage since 2018. The car runs and drives with the engine running smoothly and the gearbox selecting all gears. The interior also remains in good order aside from the driver’s bolster. The only aftermarket parts that appear to be fitted are a stainless exhaust system, cone air filter, radio and a Nardi steering wheel (original included). It has been sat for some time so the car will require some restoration, but it is a great base for what is now a very rare vehicle. The sale includes a number of spares, a V5C logbook as well as a large folder of history including old servicing and parts receipts. Previous work includes replacement of an outer sill, inner arch and section of the floor in 2021. It also received a timing belt in 2017 and an alternator in 2019 but appears to have very little use if any during current ownership. There seem to a number of parts receipts from Japan which suggests that many items are still available to buy.Estimate: £4,000 – 6,000To be auctioned along with a fantastic selection of other vehicles on March 5th at our Showell Farm site, SN15 2NU.
