Alexander Aikman was the brother of William Aikman, a bookseller and printer in Annapolis, Maryland, originally from Scotland. Due to the upheavals of the American Revolution, William Aikman left for the West Indies in September 1775, and in partnership with David Douglass (founder of the Old America Company, a theatrical company) first published the Jamaica Mercury between May 1779 and April 1780, after which time its name was changed to The Royal Gazette. Alexander took over the editorship of the newspaper after the death of his brother in 1784. This rare newspaper contains important information on the trading economy of Jamaica and its colonial administration, and includes regular and extensive advertisements of slaves for sale, and lists of runaway slaves, with their names and owners. We have been unable to trace another copy of this newspaper for the year 1788. (1)

*Kennedy (Jacqueline Bouvier, 1929-1994). President John F. Kennedy and children John Junior and Caroline, circa 1962, original gouache painting heightened with silver and gold pen, showing the President and children in Indian dress with turbans, J.F. Kennedy at the front dragging a dead tiger by its tail, the children on white and black horses following on behind, painted on a silver ground on blue card, 14 x 26 cm, mounted on plain card, framed and glazed Provenance: The family of Maud Shaw, the White House nanny to the Kennedys, and by family descent. It is understood to have been painted by Jackie Kennedy after her visit as First Lady to India and Pakistan with her sister Lee in March 1962. Maud Shaw used to explain it as a metaphor of John F. Kennedy bringing home the family bacon. A watercolour by Jackie Kennedy titled 'The White House Long Ago' painted at a similar time, and showing similar artistic style, was given to her husband as a gift. The President chose to hang this painting in his Oval Office at the White House, and now is held in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point, Boston. Jackie Kennedy also painted watercolours to be used as original designs for Christmas cards in 1963 which were used commercially by Hallmark, the originals now held by the Smithsonian Institution. A rare item of Kennedy memorabilia at auction. See Mary Evans Seeley, 'Season's Greetings from the White House: The Collection of Presidential Christmas Cards', 1996. (1)

Dostoyevsky (Fyodor). Crime and Punishment. A Russian Realistic Novel, 1st edition in English, published Vizetelly & Co. (Vizetelly's One-Volume Novels series, XIII.), 1886, list of other one-volume novels to half-title verso, 24 pp. publisher's illustrated catalogue at rear (dated November 1885), a little spotting, mostly to first and last leaves, floral patterned endpapers (partly browned), contemporary book label of J.J. Dyson to front free endpaper (name struck through in ink) and evidence of ownership name effaced from facing pastedown, inner hinges a little cracked, original blue cloth lettered in red and black and with 4 rules at head and foot of upper cover and spine, slightly rubbed and marked, spine slightly darkened and frayed at head and foot, 8vo Overall, an excellent copy of an exceedingly rare book. The translation is presented anonymously but is generally believed to have been by the Russian-born British novelist Frederick Whishaw. There appears to be no established priority between this and the first American edition (Crowell, New York) which carries the same translation and is printed from the same setting. Both the English and American first editions are mysteriously scarce, COPAC identifying just three copies of the first English edition (British Library, Trinity College Dublin and Leeds Brotherton Library), while WorldCat identifies only six copies, all in USA institutions. Even more mysteriously for such a rare book, for which only one other copy has been traced at auction in the last fifty years (Swann, 10 January 1991, lot 141), equally scarce second and third editions were published by Vizetelly in the same year. These editions carry the same pagination and are believed to be identical except for edition statements. Provenance: J.J. Dyson is believed to have been John James Dyson (1851-1921), a classicist (Gonville and Caius, Cambridge) and clergyman. At the time of publication he was curate of St Silas, Sheffield, moving to Ranmoor in 1887. He became headmaster of Alcester Grammar School in 1889, but took the school from bad to worse. He resigned in 1893, having been appointed to the living of Barnby and Mutford in Suffolk, where he remained until his death in 1921. Line, Ettlinger & Gladstone, Bibliography of Russian Literature in English Translation to 1945, p. 17; Hubin, Crime Fiction, 1749-1980, p. 121. (1)

Cinturino in pelle nera e fibbia in oro originali Rolex. - GENTLEMAN’S WRISTWATCH ROLEX OYSTER CHRONOGRAPHE, REF. 6034, CIRCA 1953 Tonneau-shaped two body 18K gold case, water-resistant, n. 944115, concave lugs, pump push button for the chronograph, screwed crown and case back, inside stamped with Rolex trademark and punches. Original black leather strap and Rolex gold buckle.  Matte silvered dial, signed "Rolex Oyster Chronographe” with applied Rolex crown, straight "Anti-Magnetique” writing, diamond-shaped indexes side by side with tritium dots, minute/seconds division at 1/5th seconds and 5-minute Arabic markers, sunk subsidiary dials for the seconds, the 30-min and 12-hour registers, outer tachymeter scale. Skeletonized alpha hands. Manual winding movement signed "Rolex Geneve”, base Valjoux, cal. 72, rhodium-plated, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance with screws, self-compensating Breguet hairspring, Monobloc shock-absorber, hairspring guard. Accompanied by a Rolex box. Diameter Ø: 36 mm   Elegant and exquisite example of Rolex Oyster Chronographe, Reference 6034, considered by some to be one of the Pre-Daytonas as ultimately subsequent developments that led to the birth of the first Cosmograph. Heir, and itself evolution of the previous reference 5034, the present watch mounts an Oyster case that, thanks to its proportions, has established itself from the beginning among the high quality chronograph models, quickly becoming not only a sport watch, but a cult item. The production lasted for over twenty years providing predominantly stainless-steel cases and leaving little space for the exemplars which today, in yellow gold and pink gold, are more rare than ever. The appeal of this watches is enhanced by the strong customization of the same through the dials which, over the years and various requests may display some varying features such as color, the indexes, the scales and the size of the registers ensuring that each watch can be "unique" and one-of-a-kind.   This watch, even after all these years, remains elegant and in impeccable condition, both outside and inside, with the Valjoux 72 caliber that appears to have been subjected to a few efficient revisions, as can also be seen by the hairspring guard applied to prevent the overlap. Such service is offered only by the best support centers.   More details and some of the various versions of the Reference 6034 are described in the book written by Paolo Gobbi I Cronografi Rolex, La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore. € 40000
