H.M.S. Beagle: a very rare painted and printed pressed card bottle coaster, c. 1830, gilt-painted to the well "H.M.S. Beagle", the sides with two printed images of ships at full sail, painted (collection?) no. 851 to the base and vestiges of old paper label (losses). Diameter 11.75cm. Provenance: Lieut. John Clements Wickham R.N. and thence by descent. Note: John Clements Wickham (1798-1864) was First Lieutenant on H.M.S. Beagle during it's second survey mission carrying Charles Darwin and captained by Robert FitzRoy. Wickham was born in Scotland (Leith, near Edinburgh) and, after leaving the Navy, spent considerable time in the Colonial service in Australia before retiring to the South of France. This coaster has descended through his family to a naval family based in Scotland. The coaster, in paper and card, was presumably never intended to be used by the officers on board but was perhaps a presentation or souvenir piece. A similar coaster relating to H.M.S. Neptune is the subject of the following lot.

Spencer Julian Wilfred Railston was born on the 8th of January 1889 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The son of Colonel Henry Edward Railston and Magdalene Railston. Spencer was educated at Radley College, where he excelled at sports. He represented the school at Boxing and was a Champion Gymnast. Railston played in the first Cricket XI at Radley and at Sandhurst, to which he gained direct entry at age 17. Coming tenth in his class when he passed out in 1907, he was gazetted as Second Lieutenant. He was placed on the unattached list of the Indian Army and spent a year with his father's regiment, the Cameroonians. While with the regiment in India, he took part in the Lightweight Boxing Championship of India and won the title, despite having not trained. In 1908 he joined the 18th King George's Own Lancers, playing Polo for his Bn and participating in Steeplechasing. Railston was a keen 'Big Game' hunter and said to be a very good shot. He undertook a cavalry course and, on the 17th of November 1909, was promoted to Lieutenant. In 1914 he was granted leave in London, where he played with Count De Madre's Polo team 'The Tigers'. As soon as the Great War broke out, Railston volunteered for active service at the front. He was attached to the 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish) and disembarked on the 16th of August 1914. He fought at Mons and was killed in action at Messines. He died while trying to rescue a female Belgian civilian lying wounded between the British and German Lines. The CWGC gives his date of death as the 31st of October, while other sources state the 1st of November. The Major General Commanding the 1st Cavalry Division wrote the following letter to his father: 'I am deeply grieved at the death of your gallant boy, who on every occasion of this war has so distinguished himself. He is a great loss to his regt. He lost his life by a gallant act. His regt was holding one-half of the village of Messines, south of Ypres, and the Germans the other half for 24 hours. In front of his troop, a poor woman was lying wounded, and your boy left his cover to bring her in. He was struck by many bullets and killed. Had he lived, he would certainly have been Mentioned in Despatches' Spencer is mentioned in volume II of 'Deeds That Thrill The Empire' on page 810. The story of how his brother Henry George Moreton Pleydell - Railston, won the DSO is featured on pages 798 to 810. His DSO group is in this sale.

A RARE SECOND WORLD WAR COMMANDO DAGGER with tapering blade, metal oval crossguard and brass reeded grip, in the original leather sheath, with brass tip, 29cm long(1943 Mk.III)Provenance: Belonged to Sgt. Arthur Herbert Harrison MM of no. 6 Army Commando at Onsbrook 4th April 1945.Lt. Sgt. Harrison and his sub-section were ordered to enter a large factory and clear it of enemy snipers. Harrison entered one doorway of a large machine workshop and as he did so a group of five enemy soldiers fired a Panzerfaust at him from the other end of the workshop. Lt. Sgt. Harrison was wounded in the leg, however completely undaunted he carried on doing the best his wound would allow, firing his carbine at the enemy. He killed one and drove the remainder of the group which included a Spandau team out of the building where he killed another, leading his sub-section onto where the enemy had taken cover. He drove them out once again and was responsible for wounding yet another before the remaining enemy soldiers surrendered. Up to this moment, the unit had been held up as the factory overlooked the route which the unit had to take with several casualties caused by the Spandau. Lt Sgt. Harrison, by his gallant and dashing action in which he showed complete disregard for his own personal safety, enabled the advance unit to continue without further casualties.

With previous MOT certificates from 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2018. Further vendor written notes available by request regarding the work carried out on the car.The GT Allegerita was Alfa Romeo’s reworking of its glorious Giulia coupé into a lightweight race car, using a combination of exotic materials and highly-developed engine modifications. The most significant changes involved the use of Peraluman 25 (a mix of aluminium and magnesium) body panels on a lightened steel base unit and a new cylinder head design incorporating dual ignition circuits. The gearbox incorporated a close-ratio gearset undercut and drilled for lightness, and a host of magnesium and aluminium parts replaced the heavier steel or alloy components of the standard Giulia coupé. The attention to detail was considerable: even the window winding mechanism was reworked in aluminium. The net result was a car weighing some 25% less than its standard sibling, with a powerful drivetrain making it a formidable – and beautiful – machine. The GTA achieved legendary status. It won the European Touring Car Championship in 1967, 1968 and 1969 in 1600cc form, and in 1971 and 1972 in 1300cc form, with countless other victories in national races and championships all over Europe, USA and Australia. Such was its success that fifty years later Alfa Romeo is still using the GTA appellation to signify its ultimate performance variants of its current model range. One aspect of its history remains obscure, however: how many were made? Ostensibly 1000 were produced to meet homologation requirements, but the chassis records are kept a closely-guarded secret by the firm. It seems that many chassis numbers were skipped, a pretty much universal practice among manufacturers until the FIA clamped down in the 1980s. Best estimate? Perhaps 500 were made in total. Subtract those lost to time and racing accidents, and what you have left is a very rare car.Chassis *105.59*775811* has its original 1300cc engine; a development of the 1600cc twin-ignition motor with a very short-throw crank to enable competition in another race class. The result is well over-square (78 x 67.5mm), and revs extremely freely. With the higher rpm limit compensating for the reduced capacity, the performance output was practically the same as the 1600; in fact, in later fuel-injected form the 1290cc motor produced 164bhp., the same as a full-race 1600 on carburettors. This car retains its Weber 45 DCOE 18s and Autodelta airbox, along with C&B 10.6mm lift camshafts and big-valves, a full stainless steel exhaust manifold and system, magnesium bellhousing, the light-weight GTA close ratio gearset and limited slip differential. Unfortunately the Campagnolo race wheels were beginning to fail, so have been replaced with a modern set of Technomagnesio replicas. It’s a sparkling road car, and a short step away from a full-blown historic racer for anyone who wants to put it back on the trackThe early history of the car is unclear. It seems it was initially raced in Italy - the base unit retains evidence of race preparation, having the dished inner wing to increase carburettor clearance and the mounting holes for a sliding-block rear suspension, features both shared with Autodelta’s championship contender, *775813* (the next car on the production line). However, it was later converted back to road use, and after being used as a getaway car, it ended up in the Police pound in Rome, where it was spotted by GTA specialist Richard Banks in 1987. Richard acquired the car on behalf of the present owner, who has since restored and maintained it regardless of cost.Click to view VIDEO CONDITION REPORT

Photo frame containing postal documents sent to The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios by Mark Ross a friend of the Manson family in 1970 - Provenance: It was given to the vendor by a friend who worked at Abbey Road Studios in the 60s/70s - Cult Collectables researched the item and said the following: 'So doing a little more research this is what I’ve been able to figure out. This album was sent while Manson was in prison. It was mailed by Mark Ross who was afriend of the Manson Family. My assumption would be this was a copy of Lie: The Love and Terror Cult which came out in 1970. So, the album was sent on behalf of Manson by a friend. The handwriting is all Mark’s not Manson’s so that makes it a bit less rare. However, it’s still a cool piece of history.' (1 in lot)
