Lot 73

A Medieval Nottingham alabaster relief carved rectangular panel depicting 'The Assumption of the Virgin'Late 15th centuryThe crowned Virgin clad in a draped robe and cloak, her hands open and slightly raised, standing within a mandorla flanked to the sides by a series of figures, angels to the upper half and saints to the lower, God the father looking down from above, the panel with traces of possibly refreshed polychrome and gilding, mounted on a later metal plate fixing, the panel, 40cm high x 25.5cm wideFootnotes:ProvenanceThe collection of Sir Michael and Lady Oppenheimer DD (3rd Baronet, British, 1924-2020), Jersey, thence by family descent. Sir Michael Oppenheimer's maternal grandparents were Sir Robert Grenville Harvey, 2nd Baronet (1856-1931) and Lady Emily Blanche Harvey (1872-1935) of Langley Park, Buckinghamshire which was the Harvey Baronet's main family seat from 1788 until 1945.Sir Michael's paternal family wealth was derived from mining interests in South Africa and his father Bernard Oppenheimer, as Chairman of the South African Diamond Corporation, received a baronetcy from George V in 1921 for setting up diamond sorting factories to employ wounded ex-servicemen after the First World War. The Oppenheimer family was involved with the prestigious De Beers brand over the subsequent decades of the 20th century and Lady Oppenheimer DD (1926-2022) was a distinguished moral and philosophical theologian, with a particular interest in the ethics pertaining to personal relationships. From the late 1300s up until the Reformation alabaster carving was a major production in the Midlands -specifically in Nottingham. Altarpieces and smaller panels were produced for the market at home, but a great number were exported -there are even some surviving examples in Iceland. They were usually painted and gilded and had a distinctive iconographic style. During the Reformation such works were hidden in England or completely destroyed. It is largely thanks to the preserved European examples that historians and academics have able to uncover the history behind these fascinating objectsTwo comparables of similar panels depicting 'The Assumption of the Virgin are illustrated in Francis Cheetham's 2005 catalogue of 'English Medieval Alabasters' at the Victorian & Albert Museum. One panel is illustrated within the Swansea altarpiece in the collection of the museum. The altarpiece, a rare survivor of a Medieval English carved alabaster and painted and carved wood multi-panelled church or chapel altarpiece was given by Lord Swansea. The panel featuring the Virgin within a similar mandorla arch differs in that it lacks the head of God the Father looking down on the scene. The second comparable panel, the gift of Sir Wilmot Herringham, depicts the Virgin again standing in a mandorla with the head of God the Father looking down from above, but to the left of the Virgin and with a kneeling figure of St Thomas who holds up the Virgin's belt with buckle and clasp similar to the present lot. This panel is also very similar to another example of the subject in Seville in the Museuo Provincial de Bellas Artes. In Cheetham's 2001 book, 'Alabaster Images of Medieval England', a further closely related 'Assumption of the Virgin' is illustrated therein. This particular panel features the Virgin wearing a fillet on her head with God the Father holding an orb above. Also, just as on the offered lot, it has a greater degree of polychrome colouring to the surface including a similar triangular border pattern to the mandorla. It is interesting to note that there are also some examples of both the two scenes of 'The Assumption of the Virgin' and 'The Coronation of the Virgin' being depicting together within one field.Comparable LiteratureF. (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceSold Bonhams 12th October 2004, lot 128.Gerald Benney decided that his home at Beenham House in Berkshire was the place to develop the use of enamels. The first steps were to travel to Zurich to find an enameller who worked for Burch Korrodi. By chance he came across the Norwegian Berger Bergensen who had worked for the House of Bolin as well as Burch. Bergensen was persuaded to come to Beenham House and taught the Benney workforce all he knew about enamelling. Alan Evans and Robert Winter became notable master enamellers for Benney. It took several years to master the craft. He refined and mastered this art, enamelling larger surface areas than Fabergé.ADRIAN GERALD SALLIS BENNEY CBE RDI (1930 – 2008)Gerald Benney was one of the most outstanding goldsmiths of the 20th century, with works being continuously produced for over fifty years, from private commissions to mass production.Born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1930. His mother Aileen was a talented silversmith and his father, Ernest, was Principal of Brighton College of Art. It was at Brighton College of Art between 1946-1948 that he trained as a silversmith under Dunstan Pruden. After two years national service with the Royal Army Service Corps he went to the Royal College of Art under Professor Robert Goodden. In his first year he was awarded a Prince of Wales scholarship. As well as designs in silver, in his early years Benney also used other material to design a range of products including clocks, lamps and prams.Benney found his first workshop at Suffolk House, Whitfield Place, off the Tottenham Court Road in London during his last term at the RCA. It was at the RCA that Benney met fellow silversmiths David Mellor and Robert Welch; between them they were to revolutionise post war silver design. At this time he also met the jeweller, John Donald.Early in his career Benney discovered, by accident, the distinctive surface texturing of silver that was to become his signature. He inadvertently used a hammer with a damaged head while producing a cup, and liked the effect. This surface texturing soon became known as 'Benney Bark Finish'. The finish was widely imitated and dominated contemporary silver design for almost two decades. Its success was, not only, for its new contemporary look but also for the practical reasons, that it almost eliminated tarnish and fingerprints. In 1963, Benney moved to Beenham House near Reading. It was here that he decided to develop the use of enamels. Starting in 1968 he revived the almost-lost art of enamelling, he went on to be one of the world's foremost modern enamellers. In 1969, he moved his London studio to Falcon Wharf, Bankside where he eventually employed 22 people. In 1973 Benney moved his workshop to warehouses in Bear Lane, Southwark. Also in this year Goldsmith's Hall held a major retrospective of his work.In 1974 he received his first Royal Warrant granted by The Queen, followed by another in 1975 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. In 1980 a fourth Royal Warrant was granted from HRH The Prince of Wales. Becoming the first craftsman to hold four Royal Warrants simultaneously.Benney's work can be seen in many collections worldwide, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Goldsmiths' Company. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A rare Dutch mother of pearl inlaid panel depicting a vase of garden flowers in the manner of Dirck Van Rijswijck (1596-1679)Probably 18th centuryThe classical twin handled pedestal urn containing an arrangement of blooms including roses, carnations, pansies and tulips on a black ground, the mother of pearl inlay with finely engraved detail, the plinth base of the vase appearing to rest on a rosewood ledge, the panel mounted in a later moulded rectangular gilt frame, the panel 26cm high x 21cm wide, the frame 34cm wide x 40cm high Footnotes:Although originally training as a goldsmith, Dirck Van Rijswijck developed his own characteristic style whilst working as a silversmith in Antwerp experimenting with the effects that could be created by the processes of engraving. This led him to perfect an idiosyncratic technique using engraved mother of pearl inlay to represent floral still life subjects using the natural variations of colour apparent in the shell to suggest the colours and surface textures of the various flowers. In terms of creative output, Rijswijck is recorded as producing a number of these mother of pearl inlaid panels depicting vases of flowers some also incorporating a chained monkey. The fine and detailed engraved decoration to the panel in the present lot demonstrates a similarly high degree of technical skill very reminiscent of Rijswijck's work. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
