Lot 201

1901 CUP FINAL Official programme, matchcard, 1901 Cup Final, Tottenham Hotspurs( sic) v Sheffield United, 20/4/1901 at The Crystal Palace. The game ended in a 2-2 draw in front of 110, 820 spectators although the replay a week later had only 20, 470 spectators at Bolton to see Spurs win 3-1. This matchcard measures just under 5" x 7" and has Official Programme at the top, English Cup Final Tie below that, Tottenham Hotspurs v Sheffield United below that with Crystal Palace and Saturday April 20th 1901 Kick off 3-30pm being in lines below. The bottom half of the matchcard has the teams listed in 1-2-3-5 formation with the three match officials below the teams. The colour of the card is light blue and we have had the card tested by a leading forensic analyst who has stated that the card is definitely from that period, to the extent that under extreme magnification a piece of wood chipping can be seen under the surface. He further stated that it was a top quality item and had to have been produced by a commercial printer as at least ten different typefaces had been used including an ornate , rare typeface for "English Cup". We feel that it is likely to have been produced for the VIP guests and officials attending the Final as there is no price on the card but it was illegal to use the wording "Official Programme " if it was not. It was certainly not unusual in those days for Tottenham to be called Hotspurs with the additional "s". This was the first time that Spurs won the FA Cup and they were members of the Southern League at the time. The reverse side is blank and there is a tape mark across the card close to the top edge where it has been laid down at some time , perhaps in a scrapbook. Minor crease with slight tear and the vendors family bought it at a leading auction house a number of years ago for a five figure sum. Generally good

Bound in red cloth (spine faded) and lacking the dust jacket. About VG Cohen's life story is an interesting one - he arrived in China in 1922 and trained Sun Yat-sen's small armed forces to box and shoot, and he soon became one of Sun's main protectors, accompanying the Chinese leader to war zones and conferences. Cohen carried two guns with him and the western community were intrigued by Sun's gun-toting protector and began calling him 'Two-Gun Cohen', a name which stuck, hence the title of the present biography. When the Japanese invaded China in 1937 Cohen joined the fight and undertook some tasks for the British Intelligence Agency, Special Operations Executive (SOE). Cohen was in Hong Kong when the Japanese attacked in December 1941 and, on the fall of Hong Kong, the Japanese imprisoned Cohen in Stanley Prison Camp. He was not released until late 1943 as part of a rare prisoner exchange.

Some light overall age wear, otherwise VG 'One of the most amusing events of my life occurred when I took the chair for a private celebration of Belloc's sixtieth birthday. There were about forty people assembled, nearly all of them were what is called important in the public sense, and the rest were even more important in the private sense, as being his nearest intimates and connections……It was to be, and was, a very jolly evening……' (from G. K. Chesterton's The Autobiography, 1936) 'On July 27, 1930, Belloc celebrated his sixtieth birthday. A dinner was organised at the Adelphi Hotel by A. D. Peters, and the occasion has already passed into the legends of immortal feasts…..An Horatian Ode, composed by Ronald Knox, was printed on the back of the menu, and this was recited by Maurice Baring, standing with a glass of Burgundy balanced on his bald head. Certain irreverent guests threw pellets of bread in a vain attempt to dislodge it……The mere list of the people present at this dinner is a tribute to the variety, and also to the quality, of Belloc's friends' (from The Life of Hilaire Belloc by Robert Speaight, 1957)

The manuscript draft, with various corrections, is marked Secret and informs the recipient that a letter from Kruger has been intercepted, explaining that it was 'evidently intended to reach Boer leader through Colonies as it was abstracted from secret agent going to Durban', adding that he is endeavouring to trace the intended recipient and continuing to provide a literal translation of Kruger's letter, in part, 'This is briefly to show you the principle on which the war has been conducted by us, namely to do as much damage as possible to the enemy by taking his convoys and impeding transport of provisions and ammunition. Seeing that ordinary destruction of railways and even blowing up of bridges does not effectually stop communications, other plans to effect more serious damage must be employed. This can only be achieved by blowing up the Watervalboven tunnel, and I therefore beg you to give your serious attention and power to this end and thus try your utmost to carry this plan into execution. I do not need to tell you how very important it is that your operations should be crowned with success…..you have to go at once with your forces in a westerly direction and try to join Generals de Wet and de la Rey in order to be able to stand up with all your forces as soon as I have ascertained and communicated to you from Europe how far Germany and France will take up our part…..I shall await your reports and statements in the direction arranged. Tomorrow, the 19th October, I leave by the Dutch Man of War Gelderland'. An unusual contemporary document relating to the Boer War. Some light age wear, VG Kruger left the Transvaal by rail on 11th September 1900 and crossed into Mozambique planning to board the first outgoing steamer, however he was prevented from doing so when the Portuguese Governor, at the request of the local British Consul, insisted that Kruger stay in port under house arrest. GRAHAM MARTHA: (1894-1991) American Modern Dancer & Choreographer. A fine, long A.L.S., Martha, six pages, 4to, Tel Aviv, 11th November 1964, to Vera [Maxwell], on stationery printed in Hebrew and English. Graham commences her letter by asking 'How do you contrive the time to create such rare and beautiful clothes, sustain an industry in such a tumultuous area, and yet still have time to make lovely gestures, such as you made to me before I left?' and continues 'The dresses are so lovely. I kept the fabulous linen…..These dresses are exactly what I needed. London and Zurich where we touched down meant a fur coat and then Tel Aviv was 80 degrees. It is a late summer. The weather is dulcet - like Santa Barbara with the same flowers and prodigality of color. Also it is cool in the evening and can be quite treacherous in late afternoon when the sun drops into the sea with tropical fashion. I have your white coat here. It is a basket weave like wool, lined and piped in satin with one button and no pockets', further remarking 'I wish I could have seen your showings. I was engulfed at the time in a labyrinth of an idea and I felt and I felt almost about to lose my thread to show me the way out. I am not sure I am not still in that twilight interior Gide describes in his “Theseus” with its secret intoxications of color and sound and scent and the high pitched vibration of approaching events. I suppose I hate to leave it as we all do - that secret, lonely, miserable time. But I have to kick myself out of it pretty soon' and also adding 'I hope the beautiful clothes you sent me to wear at Lincoln Center are safe & on view in a museum…..I…..showed it to all the company and knew it was too powerful for me to wear that night, much as I longed to. It was a wonderful, hellish experience, in contemplation before, and I was terribly afraid of the title of the evening, the vastness of the hall and of myself. You were wonderful to have thought I could have worn any of those lovely things. It is a gesture of faith from you that I treasure'. Graham also writes of her current activities, 'I am at work here in a new area, advising, coaching, supervising costumes, make-up…..of course there is the baffling subject of “style” because to most who are new and some not so new it is confused with “stylish”' and concludes 'Please understand, Vera, as I know you will, it is such a privilege to wear any of your things which have an eternal……beauty about them' before remarking in a postscript 'This is Bethsabee's paper as you know. I have no Hebrew except thank you, be quiet and phone numbers'. A letter of good content and interesting association. Annotated in ink in an unidentified hand with Graham's name to the lower edge of the final page. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG Vera Maxwell (1901-1995) American Fashion Designer who designed for Martha Graham and other famous individuals including Lillian Gish, Rosalynn Carter and Pat Nixon. Graham had become close friends with one of her students, Bethsabee de Rothschild, and when the heiress moved to Israel she established the Batsheva Dance Company in 1965. WHALE JAMES: (1889-1957) English Film Director of Frankenstein (1931) and other horror films. An excellent, rare original pencil and watercolour drawing signed (‘J. Whale’) by Whale, one page, small 4to, n.p., 1920. Whale has drawn a fine costume image of the actor Dirk Daniell wearing a tweed checked suit and purple cravat and waistcoat as he lumbers forwards with his long arms hanging before him, the sleeves of his suit jacket evidently too short. Annotated in pencil by Whale at the side ‘Dirk Daniell as “Mr. Hawkins”’ and signed and dated in pencil at the foot of the sketch. Autographs of James Whale are extremely rare in any form and this is a particularly desirable example. One minor crease to the upper left corner and with some extremely minor traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG Dirk Daniell (d.1926) English Actor, son of Frank Daniell (1868-1932) English Portrait Painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1889-1921. Following the end of World War I, Whale returned to England (having been a Prisoner of War) and tried to find work as a cartoonist. Unable to secure a permanent position, in 1919 he embarked on a stage career, working as an actor, set designer and stage director and it is from this period of Whale’s career that the present drawing dates.  It has long been debated as to whether it was James Whale or make-up artist Jack P. Pierce who created actor Boris Karloff’s familiar on-screen appearance as Frankenstein’s monster, with his shortened coat sleeves and awkward, lumbering gait. These characteristics are certainly evident in the present drawing and would certainly indicate that it was in fact Whale who devised the monster’s look for his 1931 movie.

HOGARTH WILLIAM: (1697-1764) English Painter, Printmaker and Pictorial Satirist. A good, rare D.S., Wm. Hogarth, one page, folio, n.p., 13th April 1744. The partially printed document is illustrated with a fine series of caricatures of men's heads, each in profile and at the base appears a number of slightly larger caricatures, a printed caption beneath explaining '3 Characters 4 Caricatures' and adding 'For a farther explanation of the Difference Betwixt Character & Caricature see ye. Preface to Jon. Andrews'. The printed base serves as a receipt issued by Hogarth acknowledging the sum of half a guinea received from the Rt. Hon. Lord Andover, 'being the first payment for six prints called Marriage a la Mode which I promise to deliver when finish'd on Receiving half a guinea more'. Signed by Hogarth at the conclusion (his signature a little light in places although perfectly legible) alongside the remnants of a small red wax seal. Neatly mounted and with slight wear to folds. A most attractive form of Hogarth's autograph. G. In 1743-45 Hogarth painted the six pictures of Marriage a la Mode which are now housed in the National Gallery, London. They showed a pointed skewering of upper class 18th century society and Hogarth's moralistic warning shows the miserable tragedy of an ill considered marriage for money. They are regarded by many as his finest project and certainly the best example of his serially planned short cycles. These admirable pictures were at first poorly received by the public to the great disappointment of Hogarth. William Howard, Lord Andover (1714-1756)
