A rare 17th century and later Welsh oak hutch coffer, with a hinged lid and clamped front. For a very similar example see Victor Chennery, Oak Furniture page 111, described as circa 15th century124w x 54d x 72h cmCondition report:Looks to be clean, solid and usable. Has been restored, so it is difficult to tell the later elements, although the main body looks original. Quite a few splits and wear as expected with age. The lid looks later.

Working mechanics. Long, wooden stock with remains of Liege stamp on the butt side, the 'VL' stamp is repeated several times under the fleur-de-lis. Iron mounts; Barrel bracket, muzzle ring and ramrod probably replaced. It preserves the rare 'a tige' system inside the breech. This type of rifle was initially equipped with the 'a tige' system invented by M. Thouvenin and applied to rifled weapons from 1846 onwards. As early as 1859-1860, most of the weapons equipped with this system were converted by removing it. This is a rare example that survived the conversion. See 'Armes a Feu Francaises Modeles Reglementaires' by J. Boudriot, chapter 'LES ARMES A TIGE'. length 121 cm.

The hilt decorated with knots with surface carved with floral and geometrical motifs. The pommel worked as a bog vajra. Rare in such big dimensions. The vajra sword (ray khri in Tibetan, khadga in sanscrit) is one of the two main symbolic implements of Manjushri, the trascendent buddha of wisdom. Originally an instrument of death, the vajra sword symbolizes wisdom's capacity to kill ignorance, independent existence of the self which is the root of all the negative emotions. This unusual large sword was perhaps originally part of a statuary group in Tibet or Nepal. length 56,7 cm.

Inside the barrel visible groove and pitting areas. A little play of the barrel. Trigger guard with finger support. Ivory grips. Ring for the strap. Grip dated '1874' and with four-digit serial number '65xx', the same serial number can be found on the barrel, on the latch and on the cylinder. Arrow engravings on the receiver. Possible traces of a mark on the bottom of the grip. A total of 9000 examples were produced with the inscription 'REISSUE', numbered separately from 1 to 9000. This special series included both Second Model Russians and Third Model Russians, made mainly for Turkish and Japanese contracts and for civilian markets. This could be a very rare Japanese Third Model (1000 produced in all) for the civilian market, given the lack of military marks and the 44 Russian cal. which was not used in Turkey. See: 'Standard Catalog of Smith & WESSON' by Supica/Nahas, pp. 95-97. length 29,5 cm.

Lock with external wheel, flat lock plate, the hammer and the plate on the spring are finely engraved with dragons, engraved pan cover provided with sliding pan cover. Beautiful fruitwood stock decorated with butt-plate, plaques, dark horn bands and flowers, a cracking under a spiral which can easily be restored. Patchbox. Iron trigger guard pierced with a heart and a support ball. Set trigger. Bicolour horn-tipped wooden ramrod, iron cartridge extractors. For Gabriel Dorn see 'Der Neue Stöckel', vol. I, pg. 302.The beauty of this rare firearm does not come from the precious gilded and silver decorations but from the simple play between the yellow coming from the fruitwood and the contrast of the dark horn of the inlay-works. A technique also used by other famous gunsmiths, for example by G. Muller and Hieronymus Borstorffer in Munich, who used ivory and ebony to create a beautiful wheel shotgun found in the Rothschild Collection in Waddenson Manor, illustrated by Claude Blair figure 11 and 112 cat. n. 105, pg. 270-273. length 104.5 cm.

One band with different finishing. Walnut fore-end and butt, the former with checkering. Curved butt plate (nickel-plated again?). Saddle ring on the left side. This is probably the rare, so-called 'Baby Carbine' variant (actual weight 2.47 kg), lighter than the standard model. See Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition, p. 123 (5B-275). length 94 cm.
dating: 1878 provenance: Greece, Round, rifled, 11 mm cal. barrel at the nozzle (bore clean, visible grooves on the inside), with clutch for the bayonet and foresight, foldaway and adjustable rear sight, various marks including the Liege bench mark and date '1873'. dating: Third quarter of the 19th Century provenance: USA, Round, rifled, 24', 56 cal. barrel, with foresight, clutch for the bayonet (later assembled?), octagonal base with a three heights leaf-shaped rear sight. Bore with signs of use, visible groove. Five-shot cylinder (acid cleaned?). External hammer. The dorsal tang of the frame marked 'COLTS PATENT', the lower one marked '4xx'. Wooden butt and fore-end, the former with signs of use and time, restorations and a dowel replaced. The fore-end with brass stripe. Various dents on the iron surfaces. Working mechanics. Iron ramrod. According to the owner's information, this may be one of the very rare Colt Revolving Rifles used by Garibaldi and the Thousand: of the 59 purchased by Garibaldi, 48 were sent to Bologna to be modified. The model presented here bears commercial markings and no military inscription, the fore-end has been clearly modified by lowering it on one side, suggesting that the clutch for the bayonet was added after the purchase, just like it was done with Garibaldi's rifles. The known serial numbers of these rifles range from 265 to 570. See also 'Le Colt di Garibaldi' by E. Arrigoni. length 108,3 cm.
