To raise funds for Manchester Charities, since the city was suffering as a result of the depressed state of the cotton trade, the music hall entertainer George Robey (1869-1954) organised a special charity match. One side was made up of City's 1904 FA cup winners, with Robey himself playing instead of striker Billy Gillespie, and the other of the 1907 team, including Norgrove, which won 4-3. The player's last first-team match was against Aston Villa on 16 September 1911, which is presumably the reason the 'Blue & White' programme for the day was retained with the other items. ++++

A George III mahogany apothecary's shop sign, lettered in gilt Hathway APOTHECARY Sells all sorts of Drugs Wholesale and Retail as Cheap as in LONDON in rococo border, 69 x 131.5cm A very rare example of an 18th century tradesman's shop sign. It owes its survival to having been re-used as a table-top until its serendipitous re- discovery in situ. It is almost certainly the sign of a Hereford apothecary, Robert Hathway. He is mentioned in the 1781 will of Martha Noble (Herefordshire Record Office, F35/RC/MII/133). An Edmund Hathway was apprenticed to John Gwillim, apothecary of Hereford, for five years, on 25 March 1791, but on stylistic grounds a post 1796 dating seems less likely than one of, say, the 1770s or '80s. We are grateful for the assistance of Mrs Dee Cook, Archivist of The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in the cataloguing of this lot. ++Reduced slightly in size when presumably early in the 19th c adapted as the centre leaf of a dining table (lot 1010) in the present Sale. Some surface wear and accretion of grime. An approx 1.5 inch brown stain around the edges in consequence of being mounted on a table frame. Clusters of four small holes in the corners where brass table clip -brackets were fitted and now removed without damage. Attractive and unusual.
