Interesting Collection to RAF Flight Lieut, later Squadron Leader, J.T.Hutton. Includes Log Book, Photograph Album and documents including two Mention in Despatches certificates. After training at O.C No 2 Squadron Cranwell & 21 O.U.T. Squadron he joins 36 Squadron Flying Wellingtons August 1942. In one of his first flights in the Mediterranean the Wellington he is piloted is forced down near the coast in the Spanish Sahara ( 25th August 1942). After a worrying few days they are rescued by a destroyer HMS Laforey and destroy the damaged aircraft. Amazingly all the events are captured in photographs and very comprehensively captioned in Hutton's Photograph Album. Later after a short period in the Arakan/Indian theatre he engages in Anti-Submarine operations with at least two U-Boat attacks. Interesting he is involved in Special Operations dropping supplies in presumably occupied France in July 1944. His two Mention in Despatches (1943 and January 1945) are included as is a very rare original Pilots notes for the Wellington III (1942). Along with some unusual ephemera including air dropped leaflet printed in Japanese and a two page diarised summary of his service career. A letter in the collection show that Hutton later worked for BEA. A most desirable collection with an excellent log book supported by photographs and ephemera.

A rare, large and documented, oak and mahogany gateleg dining table,c.1675-1700, the oval drop-leaf top of exceptionally thick mahogany boards, the oak base with a single end-frieze drawer and spiral-turned legs joined by similar peripheral and central cross-bracing stretchers, the gates also formed from spiral-turnings, but of smaller section,171.8cm wide133.2cm deep77.5cm highIllustrated: Alan Bowett, 'Woods in British Furniture-Making 1400-1900', 2012 p.120, pl.M4.This table is believed to represent a very early use of mahogany in English furniture-making. It is noted ibid. p.121, that 'on stylistic grounds, (it) should predate 1700, but such examples are rare'. The first specific mention of mahogany in the English Customs returns occurs in 1700, when mahogany valued at £5 was imported. Other instances of it being recorded in shipments occur in the 1710s. Mahogany was sold as a prize after two captured Spanish vessels were sold in London in 1702/3. A rare pair of Chinese yangcai 'New Year Longevity' stem cups, Qianlong or Jiaqing period, each of inverted bell shape with moulded mask ring handles, finely painted to medallions with prunus, lingzhi and sacred bamboo (nandina) which form the rebus - May the fungus bestow longevity, the reverse inscribed 'xin nian ming bei' (New Year longevity cup) 'yu Kai fu ju' (an extract from a poem) and 'fu jiang zeng wan' (fujiang's pleasures), on a sgraffito ruby ground decorated with feathery leaves and flowers, the interiors with five red bats, symbolising the ‘Five Blessings’, there is a different diaper band below each rim and around each foot, the base with underglaze blue mark 'zhu lin tang' (Pearl Forest Hall), 11cm highCONDITION: One of the cups has been broken in half and reglued with some filler restoration and splintering to the immediate area on the inside. They don't appear to have any restoration or filling on the exterior, but there is also a small associated chip to the rim on one side. The second cup has a small V-shaped section of the rim broken and reglued, with some slight splinter losses around the immediate area on the exterior and a short hairline crack curving around from this, there is also some flaking to the enamel on the top of one of the mask handles and also both with some wear to the gilding on the rim.

A rare Derby single handled chocolate cup, cover and stand, c.1795-1800, painted in the manner of John Brewer to oval and canted rectangular reserves with hunting dogs, game birds, parrots, rabbits, a sheep and a squirrel, on a canary yellow ground, puce mark, 11 cm highCONDITION: All pieces with minor wear to the gilding and enamels, some occasional minor glaze imperfections. The inner sleeve of the cover has a splinter chip, the stand has small splinter chip to the upper edge and there is a 20mm long hairline crack to the right of the rabbits reserve.

A rare and important lead glass candlestick, attributed to George Ravenscroft, c.1680 semi-crizzled, the cylindrical nozzle above a stem with central segmented knop flanked by quatre-lobed knops, on a rib moulded spreading foot and three bun feet, 27.5cm highCONDITION: Andrew Rudebeck collection.Condition - noticeable crizzling and a small splinter chip to the nozzle. There is very fine and thin layer of surface crizzling to the stem which can only be seen with an eye glass. There are small patches of white crizzling between the ribs of the base visible on top and on the underside to the actual ribs. Wear to the bun feet consistent with age.

A rare documentary Irish wheel engraved lead glass goblet, dated 1697, attributed to Odaccio's Glasshouse, Dublin,the rounded funnel bowl engraved with numerous 'M' family member's initials within laurel wreaths, possibly for the Martin family, and the inscription 'I : PRAY TO GOD ' BLESS THEM : ALL', above a merese and angular inverted baluster stem, on an incomplete conical foot, 17.5cm high, with a Victorian fitted rosewood & pewter inlaid boxCONDITION: Andrew Rudebeck collection.Condition - The foot is broken and large sections are lacking. A museum style fitted perspex base has been made so that the goblet can be displayed standing up. There are visible striations to the glass bowl and some impurities in the stem.

Tara als Nothelferin in allen Lebenslagen SINO-TIBETISCH, entsprechend dem Situ-Kayiü-Stil, 18./19.Jh. 63,5 x 46 cm R. Obwohl Tara Millionen von Manifestationen hat, erscheint sie meist in grüner Form, wie in dem blassem Grün des hier vorgestellten Thangka. In den Preishymnen an Tara wird sie als Retterin -"Befreierin" - angerufen, die mit unerschöpflichem Mut jegliche Angst vertreibt, die schlimmsten Dämonen besiegt, und alles was man wünscht und erfleht, gewährt. Sie entfernt Vergiftung und ansteckende Krankheiten, und schützt die Menschheit vor den acht großen und sechzehn kleineren Schrecken, z. B.: Angst vor Feinden, Angst vor Löwen, Elefanten und Giftschlangen, Angst vor Feuer; vor Räubern, Angst vor Gefangenschaft, vor Überschwemmung, Angst vor Menschenfressern, Angst vor Lepra, Angst vor Bösem das von Indras Boten geschickt wurde, Angst vor königlicher Strafe, vor Meteroriten und Unglück jeglicher Art. Tara, die am unteren Bildrand, in Gestalt der Parna Shabari, die mit einem grünen Röckchen aus grünen Blättern bekleidet ist, befreit im Moment einen Verängstigten aus seiner Not. Diese Malerei ist ein Teilstück einer Serie, denn die Tara ist seitlich von einem zentralen Bild abgebildet, und war ihrer Ausrichtung zufolge, links von dem Hauptbild positioniert. Hier ist Tara im Zentrum der Malerei in seitlicher Sitzweise dargestellt, ihren rechten Fuß hat sie auf ihrem Gewandsaum ausgestellt um jeden Augenblick zu Hilfe eilen zu können. Dieses Thangka, zeigt einige Szenen Tara's Hilfeleistungen, beispielsweise Not vor Gefahren vor Löwen, Elefanten und Dieben. Andere Gefahren sind auf den verbliebenen Bildern dargestellt. Die rechte Hand hält die Tara hier in argumentierender Geste, und mit der linken Hand den Stängel einer Päonienblüte, der aus einer goldenen Vase emporragt. Zwei Begleiterinnen stehen der Nothelferin zur Seite. Tempera und Gold auf Baumwollgewebe, unter Glas gerahmt. Provenienz: Aus einer alten süddeutschen Privatsammlung, zwischen 1968 und 1972 bei Schoettle Ostasiatica erworben - Altersspuren, berieben A RARE THANGKA DEPICTING TARA, Sino-Tibetan, according he Situ-Kagyü-Stlye, 18th/19th ct., framed and glazed. Sehr seltener Schultertopf mit kupferrotem Dekor von Weinlaub und Trauben KOREA, 18.Jh. H.21/D. 26,5 cm Auf kurzem weiten Fuß, gebauchte Wandung mit zylindrischem 2,2cm hohem, weitem Hals. Das fein getöpferte Gefäß ist ganz mit einer weißlich-grau-grünen, glänzenden Glasur bedeckt. Auf beiden Seiten ist die Laibung bedeckt mit einem lebendig skizzierten Traubenzweig mit Weinreben. Provenienz: Aus einer bedeutenden süddeutschen Privatsammlung, erworben bei Klefisch Köln, 30.11.2002 Lot 368 - Vgl. für ein sehr ähnliches Stück Slg. Dr. Breuer, Versteigerungskatalog Berlin 1929, Kat. Nr. 36, abgebildet auf Tafel 1 und dazu den Kommentar im Vorwort von Otto Kümmel: ..und die koreanische Töpferei, unter der das merkwürdige Gefäß mit Purpurdekor Nr. 36, eine Seltenheit ersten Ranges, auffällt. Bemerkenswert ist die fast identische Höhe. Übrigens datiert Kümmel dieses von Grosse stammende Stück ist das 14. Bis 15. Jh. Heute ist dieses Stück im Westendorp Legat unter Nr. AK-NAK-551 im Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. G.ST.G.N. Gompertz datiert in seinem Buch 'Korean Pottery & Porcelain of the Yi Period' unter Nr. 78B einen sehr ähnlichen Topf (Folk Art Museum Tokyo) in das 16./17. Jh. Dasselbe Stück wird von Akaboshi, G. und Nakamaru, H. in ihrem Buch 'Five Centuries of Korean Ceramics' Pottery and Porcelain oft he Yi Dynasty' unter Nr. 6 publiziert und ist innen und auf dem Umschlag Rücken abgebildet. Ein weiteres ähnliches Stück, das dem National Museum in Korea gehört, publizierte d'Argencé, in seinem Katalog '5000 Years of Korean Art' zu der Wander-Ausstellung durch die USA von 1979-1981. Für ein formal ebenfalls sehr ähnliches Stück jedoch mit Bambus-Motiv sieh 'The Art of the Korean Potter', Asia House Gallery, New York, 1968, Nr. 97 und schließlich noch einen Topf in Meiping Form aber mit einem sehr ähnlichen Trauben-Motiv, Nr. 415 in Eckhardt, A. 'Geschichte der koreanischen Kunst', Leipzig 1929 - Wenige kurze Brandrisse A RARE COPPER-RED GLAZED GRAPEVINE JAR, Korea, Yi dynasty, 18th ct., like blossoms and bamboo, grapes and grapevines were popular subjects in Joseon ceramics and ink paintings. Segment eines dreidimensionalen Mandalas mit Darstellung eines Leichenackers TIBET, ca.13.Jh. 60x6,5 cm o.S. Repoussée, Kupferblech, feuervergoldet. Bei Mandalas mit zornvollen Gottheiten im Zentrum findet man einen sogenannten Leichenacker-Ring als äußerster oder vorletzter Kreis einer Mandalastruktur. Er besteht aus acht fortlaufenden Feldern mit Darstellungen von Leichenplätzen. Diese Leichenstätten werden sehr drastisch als höchst furchterregende Orte beschrieben, auf der das Blut von Teufeln (oder Feinden, Gegnern) vergossen ist und deren Fleisch und Gehirne zerhackt in kleine Stücke rundum verstreut liegen. Schwarze Wolken, vermischt mit dem Qualm verbrannten Fleisches, ballen sich dort zusammen, und schwarze wieder belebte Körper, deren höllisches Gelächter rundherum erschallt, vollführen dort ihren Tanz. Cakrasamvara und Vajravarahi TIBET, 2.Hälfte 17.Jh. 32 x 22 cm Dieses kleine kostbare Meditationsthangka kann als eine Art Wegweiser und Lehrpfad für den Besitzer oder Auftraggeber verstanden werden. Es beinhaltet einen Prozeß dessen Ausgangspunkt eine Diagnose voraussetzt, die auf einer gefühlten inneren Unstimmigkeit basiert, einen Heilungsplan einschließt, der auf dem Willen beruht die innere Ordnung wieder herzustellen, und zu dem spirituellen Ziel zu gelangen die Buddhaschaft zu . erreichen oder ihr so nahe wie möglich zu kommen. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Meditationsthangkas, steht die komplexe Darstellung der tantrischen Gottheit Cakrasamvara in "liebender" Vereinigung mit der Weisheitspartnerin Vajravarahi. Diese Vereinigung beinhaltet symbolisch die "geschickten Mittel" als männliches, und "vollkommene Einsicht" als weibliches Prinzip. Geschickte Mittel werden als Erbarmen gekennzeichnet, und vollkommene Weisheit und Einsicht in die Leerheit aller Phänomene. Elf sehr seltene Thangka aus einer Serie mit Szenen aus dem Leben des Bön-Begründers TIBET, spätes 18./ frühes 19. Jahrhundert je 61 x 48 cm Elf Thangkas mit den Darstellungen der Lebensgeschichte des Begründers der Bön-Religion, in der Art der Jataka-Darstellungen des Lebens des Buddha. Serie von großer Seltenheit und religionshistorischer Bedeutung. Die Serie bestand ursprünglich aus 12 Thangkas, nummeriert von 1-12 auf der Rückseite, und mit Titeln versehen. Die Hängung erfolgt, entgegen der sonst üblichen Praxis bei Jataka-Thangkas, von links nach rechts. Thangka No. 2 fehlt. Tempera und Gold aus Baumwollgewebe; originale Einfassungen unterschiedlicher Seidenstoffe und Brokate, wobei die unmittelbare zweifarbige Einfassung immer gleich beschaffen ist. Die Malereien sind wohl von verschiedenen Händen gefertigt wohl aber aus der gleichen Werkstatt. Dies kann man aus dem Duktus der rückseitigen Inschriften erkennen die wohl von ein und derselben Hand geschrieben wurden. Die Inschriften, rückseitig am oberen Rand, beinhalten die Reihenfolge und die kurze Angabe zur Thematik der jeweiligen Malerei. Die Inschriften auf dem Rücken der Gottheiten positioniert, sind Weihesilben und Mantras, die nicht übersetzbar sind. (enthält 5 von urspünglich 12 Thangkas). Da es sich bei der Gestalt Tonpa Shenrabs eher um eine legendäre Erscheinung handelt, sind entweder keine zeitlichen Zuordnungen vorhanden oder man stützt sich auf die Tradition des "Ewigen Bön" und geht von einer Geburt vor etwa 1800 Jahren aus.Die Thangkas der hier vorliegenden Serie sind Szene für Szene mit Inschriften in goldenen tibetischen Lettern versehen. Dies macht eine genaue Analyse der einzelnen Stationen und Begebenheiten in der Biographie Tonpa Shenrabs möglich, im Gegensatz zu den oben erwähnten Bilderfolgen die gänzlich ohne Inschriften sind. Drei verschiedene Biographien des Religionsstifters sind bekannt. Eine dieser Lebensbeschreibungen diente wohl als Vorlage für diese Bilderfolge. Bemerkenswert ist dass die zentralen Darstellungen der vorliegenden Reihe nicht den Buddha Shakyamuni darstellt sondern immer Tonpa Shenrab Miwo, in Gestalt des Buddha. Die beiden oben erwähnten Thangka-Versionen beschränken sich nur auf die Szenen seines Wirkens, ohne zentrale Darstellungen. In den Lehren, sowohl der buddhistischen als auch des Bön, tauchen viele Parallelen auf. Auch in den Darstellungen des Lebens von Shenrab sind viele Ähnlichkeiten zu den Jatakas von Buddhas Leben zu erkennen, z. B: die Geburtszene im ersten Thangka oder auch auf dem letzten Thangka (12) das Eingehen in's Paranirvana, und die Einäscherung. Dennoch gibt es wesentliche Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Schulen und deren Darstellungen. Bezeichnend ist dass an Stelle des Diamantszepters (Vajra) im Bön die "linksläufige" Swastika tritt - ein Beispiel hierzu sind die linksläufigen, swastikaförmigen Wolken in Thangka No. 9 (obere rechte Ecke), um nur eine bildhafte Besonderheit hervorzuheben. Auch die Umschreitung der Heiligtümer gegen den Uhrzeigersinn ist ein Gegensatz. Umgekehrt hat der Bön Einfluss auf die Praktiken und Lehren des Padmasabhava ausgeübt. Diese Bildfolge der Historie des Großen "Lehrmeisters" (Tönpa) gibt einen für die Forschung unschätzbaren und umfassenden Einblick in die Tradition.
