Bechuanaland British Bechuanaland Original "carte de visite" photograph, by Elliott & Fry of Baker St., of Rev. Robert Moffat (1795-1883, Scottish Congregationalist missionary to Africa and father-in-law of David Livingstone), signed by him with his date of birth and marked "Recd. from Dr. Moffatt 19th. Feby 1874" on reverse, and a further autographed card on which he has written "Fifty four years Missionary to the Bechuanas S Africa. Provisional "One/Half /Penny" on 3d. pale reddish lilac and black block of six (3x2), [43-45, 55-57] within the surcharge setting; two very faint miniscule perf. stains, otherwise fresh lightly mounted mint, the lower row of three unmounted mint. Bechuanaland British Bechuanaland 1891 (Nov.) Cape of Good Hope Overprinted "British/Bechuanaland" Reading Up 1d. carmine-red reconstructed marginal block of six formed by three horizontal pairs, the top pair, marginal with plate number "7", variety one without overprint, the centre pair variety "Bechuanaland" omitted and the pair at foot with almost all of "Bechuanaland" omitted, all three pairs showing part albino impressions of the overprint, the upper pair with the stamps remaining unmounted, the two other pairs with large part original gum; the varieties caused by a folding under of part of the upper right corner with some resultant creasing which should not be considered a caveat. A remarkable accomplishment to bring these three pairs together, which were last offered together in 1900. Undoubtedly one of the most important items of Bechuanaland philately. B.P.A. Certificates for the top pair (2008) and for the middle pair (2003) which is also represented by a Philatelic Foundation Certificate (1991). S.G. 31a, 31c. Photo Note: In the Tamsen sale of May 1900 lot 196 comprised a block of twelve of the 1d. value described as "on two only the surcharge "British" appears, and one is entirely without surcharge, rare". The marginal pair without overprint has not appeared at auction since that time. The crease only affected a vertical strip of four stamps from the upper right corner of the pane. "6 de" inverted) and with manuscript signature "Dion Solomon/P.M." of the postmaster below; first two lines of the address inked over though extremely rare with only four example of the Kanye bisect recorded, two of which are in institutional collections leaving only this and one other in private hands. Bechuanaland Covers and Cancellations 1929 (23 Nov.) envelope to Cape Town carried on the Oldsmobile Expedition from Ghanzi, bearing 1925-27 1d. (2), one cancelled by the special "oldsmobile/kalahari mail." datestamp with a further strike alongside, the other cancelled at Gaberones on 29 November; a few small faults though very rare. The few other covers known from the expedition were posted from South or South West Africa, this being the sole known cover from the expedition bearing Bechuanaland stamps. (8.10) on reverse; crease at top crosses the embossed stamp where folded prior to use.
