A RARE FAMILLE-ROSE PORCELAIN SCONCE, QIANLONG PERIOD Size: 15.9 cm (D)The branch is in the form of an arm, with the hand clutching the candle-holder, issuing from a teardrop-shaped bracket decorated with cloud scrolls in bright enamels. The arm is glazed white with a gilt bracelet and a gilt base to the candle-holder. A RARE BLUE AND WHITE CUPSTAND?PERIOD OF HONGWU Size: 19.5 cm (D) With shallow rounded sides divided into twelve bracket foliations, rising to a barbed everted rim, exquisitely painted in shades of grayish blue with ‘heaping and pilling’ depicting blossoms and foliage, encircled around the sides by detached sprays of peony and chrysanthemum, all framed by a border of cresting waves emitting white foam.

A rare pair of 19th century Minton porcelain twin-handled wine coolers, impressed marks, one hand painted with frieze of rural life, the other with marine scene, within borders, footed bases, 16.5cm high First example with hairline crack to rim, approximately 3cm, slight rubbing to the gilt lining. From the evidence of the interior glazing there also appears to be some restoration but it is difficult to identify exactly where. Second example with rubbing to the gilt lining and overall crazing to the blue ground. Interior with hairline crack across base, considerable scratching and similar evidence of possible restoration.

An important archive of personal papers relating to Admiral Sir George Augustus Westphal (1785-1875), from the Battle of Trafalgar and after, containing interesting and rare correspondence from many of the greatest naval heroes of the day, as well as a most complete account of Westphal’s services, composed by himself, signatories to correspondence include Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane, Prime Minister George Canning, The Duke of Kent and his wife, Princess Victoria (parents of Queen Victoria), Admiral Sir Thomas Troubridge, Admiral Sir George Cockburn, Admiral Sir Edward Pellew (First Viscount Exmouth), General De Lacy Evans, The Marquis of Anglesey and others, the collection includes approximately sixty original contemporary orders, letters, commissions and other documents, plus other sundry documents to include three further copies of Westphall’s petitions/statements of service; The Duchess of Wellington, printed invitation, with ms. details, to a soiree: ‘La Duchesse de Wellington prie Le capitaine Wesptphal R.N. de lui faire l’honneur de venir passer la Soiree chez elle le Jeudi prochain, le 2nd November 1815.’; a hand-coloured printed map of the Battle of Trafalgar labelled on reverse: ‘For Model Plan of Trafalgar Fight... (13 items of contemporary correspondence.), plus two Government Bonds (1829 and 1830) of Westphal’s, an Income Tax statement for 1842, Admiralty circular re Statements of Service, the collection arranged with a catalogue in eleven stiff blue paper folders with gilt-titled headings, the whole in a bespoke drop-back cloth book box, gilt titled spine and upper cover, 36.5 x 24.5 x 10 cm (Qty: an archive)NOTESThe important Napoleonic era naval archive relating to Captain Sir George Augustus Westphal (later an Admiral on the Retired List) – one of the heroes of the Battle of Trafalgar where he was a Midshipman aboard Nelson’s Flag Ship, HMS Victory , and upon whom command of the Main Deck devolved at about 3pm, until he himself was severely wounded in the head, taken below and laid by Admiral Nelson: Nelson’s tunic was rolled up beneath his head as a pillow and when it came to treating his wounds it had adhered to the dried blood on his head such that part of it had to be cut away. Westphal long treasured this memento of his sponsor and commander. Westphal saw much more distinguished service in Home Waters and in the North Americas, notably during the battle of New Orleans, where he was one of few senior officers to emerge with credit. He was ‘under fire against the Enemy, it is no exaggeration to say, upwards of One Hundred Times. His conduct upon all occasions has merited the approbation of his superiors’. Upon his death in 1875, aged ninety, he was the last surviving Royal Navy officer to have fought at Trafalgar on board HMS Victory . ', contemporary initialled pencil note in an unidentified hand at head of sheet, 'N.B. He is best known for his film work, spanning more than thirty years, from Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes to Star Wars and Superman. Prior to his being called up at the end of 1940, and then serving with the Royal Signal Corps, Beddoes had been working at the Windmill Theatre in London's West End. In an autobiographical made some written shortly before his death, Beddoes wrote: 'one night in 1940 I walked off the stage to become a stretcher-bearer in the blitz on London. Then I went into the army. I never went back into the profession.' In a letter to the Artist's Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Information, (dated 10 October 1940), Beddoes explains how he came to make these remarkable drawings: '… [I] submit to you the accompanying sketches in the hope that they might be of use as documentary evidence or, in any other way that you might think useful. I am a scenic designer, and happened to be watching the raid last Saturday afternoon from the roof of a building in Piccadilly Circus. I was able to make a quick sketch of the effects of fires caused by the bombs dropped on South London, and again, later in the evening I made two sketches with colour notes of the fire, and added the colour afterwards. Should the sketches be of any use to you, I should be pleased if you would accept them and perhaps any future sketches I may make when I join the army in the very near future.'In 1999 Maggs Bros., London, issued Catalogue 1271, in which they offered the Ivor Beddoes El Alamein archive of 108 works on paper and noted, in reference to Beddoes' blitz drawings, that 'sadly, the sketches of that raid were not accepted and their whereabouts are unknown'. A copy of this catalogue is included with the lot, with Bob Wyatt's added manuscript footnote indicating that he now has these blitz drawings in his collection. NB. ARR will not apply to this lot.

Poole Pottery Rare Stoneware Fawn. Small seated fawn by Poole Pottery. A very appealing Poole Pottery stoneware sculpture of a fawn. It stands approximately 3.9'' tall and is about 5'' long. It is in excellent condition without damage or repair. This gorgeous little Poole Pottery fawn was designed by Barbara Linley-Adams and produced from 1979 to 1989, please see photographs.

John Williams signed it in 1998 at the LSO concert at the Barbican in London and Steven Spielberg signed it at the 2008 War Horse Premiere in London. It has been in storage and only came out for the signings so it is in incredible condition andwould look sensational framed.

A very fine ivory netsuke by Masanao of Kyoto, carved as an acolyte, or other figure, seated on the back of a recumbent water buffalo, 6cm long, signed in a wavy reserve beneath the right haunch, Masanao. Edo Period, late 18th Century.Provenance: The Property of a Lady. From a Private Collection, acquired by her Great-Grandfather, and all collected prior to his death in 1944. This rare subject for Masanao is thought to be both the only example of its type, and unrecorded hitherto. For another example of Masanao's late 18th Century water buffalos, compare Lot 119 from the Harriet Szechenyi sale at Bonham's on 8th November, 2011.PLEASE NOTE: THIS ITEM CONTAINS OR IS MADE OF IVORY.
