Seven railway holiday guides, comprising G.W.R. Holiday Haunts for 1935, 1940 and 1947; Holidays by L.M.S. for 1938, 1939 (part edition - illustrations only) and 1940; and a British Railways Holiday Guide for 1949, each with soft covers and illustrations, each octavo. Albert Goodwin RWS (1845-1932), 'Sunset, Blakeney, Norfolk', oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 1919 in arched top frame decorated by the artist, 64 cm x 81.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, by descent through the artist's family. The influence of J M W Turner on Albert Goodwin is clearly evident in this atmospheric work. The use of subtle transparent glazes combined with glowing oranges and heavy impasto of the sinking sun, brilliantly capture the last minutes before nightfall. Goodwin was particularly adept at capturing fleeting atmospheric effects both in watercolour and oil, and was constantly experimenting with new techniques. The Connoisseur described Goodwin as 'one of the few artists for whom some measure of Old Mastership can be reasonably predicted in their lifetimes. A landscape painter of rare delicacy and imagination, he possessed the art of capturing effects so ethereal as to make them almost impossible of attainment by ordinary means. There are not many artists who have this facility, but Goodwin was one of them'
