ISLAMIC COINS, Abbasid, al-Radi, Gold Dinar, al-Kurr 3(2)5h, 3.83g (A 254.1). Crude uneven strike, weak in parts, otherwise very fine, extremely rare. Al-Kurr was the name given by the Arabs to the Nahr al-Kurr river, which formed the northern boundary of the province of Arran. Although it was unusual to name a mintplace after a river, it is possible that this was an emergency mint set up to pay the army at a camp beside the river. Despite the crudeness of its dies, the coin contains an attractive ornament in the lower obverse field and handsome braided Kufi in the word muhammad in the reverse field.
ISLAMIC COINS, Abbasid, Silver Dirhams (16): Isbahan 243h, 249h, 318h, Surra man Ra’a 228h, Shiraz 309h, 321h, Fars 219h (plugged), 248h, 254h, Mah al-Basra 288h (pierced), Madinat Mah al-Kufa 24xh, al-Muhammadiya 249h, Marw 246h, Nasibin 28xh, 295h, mint unclear 250h. Fine to good very fine, many scarce or rare. -16
