LMS smokebox numberplate 99 with the additional M prefix that was used for a short while after nationalisation. Ex LMS Stanier 3P 2-6-2 T built at Derby in 1935 and numbered 99. Renumbered to 40099 in BR days and withdrawn from 24D Lower Darwen in 1962 and scrapped. In lightly restored condition, a rare survivor.

Worksplate BUILT BY AND ON LOAN TO LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY 1945 DARLINGTON WORKS. Ex LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 numbered LMS 8546 and BR 48546. Allocated to Royston, Staveley, Patricroft, Heaton Mersey and 10D Lostock Hall from where it was withdrawn in July 1968 and scrapped. Oval engraved brass lightly face cleaned measures 13.5in x 8in. Rare to find one of these with the full And on Loan to not filled in.

Smokebox Numberplate 393 ex Stanier LMS  8F 2-8-0, built by North British in 1941 as works No 24701, for the Ministry of Supply and numbered 393. This engine was sent to Persia in 1941 and later renumbered WD no 70393 which was applied on transfer to Egypt in 1944. Renumbered again to 505 in 1952 and finally Egyptian State Railways 836 in 1956. In restored condition a rare survivor.

Shedplate 32D Yarmouth South Town 1948 to November 1959. This ex GER shed had quite an eclectic allocation in the 1950s of around 20 locos covering eleven classes. Most notable were 7 B17s including the two former streamlined examples and 3 Britannias that only stayed for around a month. In face restored condition, a rare code that's only appeared four times at auction before.

Worksplate LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY REBUILT STRATFORD WORKS 1888 31 ex Holden J66 0-6-0 T built at Stratford and originally numbered GER 313, LNER 7313, 8362, BR 68382 and lastly BR DEPARTMENTAL 31. Allocations included Stavely GC for a short while and Stratford Works where it saw out its life. Oval cast brass measuring 9in x 5in. Face restored and very rare to see a departmental number on a 9x5 plate.

Worksplate ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & CO LTD KILMARNOCK CALEDONIA WORKS No 396 1956 ex British Railways Diesel Class 01 0-4-0 numbered 11504 and D2954 and 01001 in 1974. The locomotive spent most of its working life at Holyhead working on the breakwater and was withdrawn in September 1979 and scrapped. Oval cast aluminium, face restored, measures 9.75in x 7.25in. A rare plate from a Class of 5 and one of only two to receive a BR Tops number.

Allocated to 71I Southampton Docks from where it was withdrawn from in October 1962. Circular cast iron in restored condition, measures 9.25in diameter. 30070 was preserved and has returned to service in Longmoor Military Railway Lined Blue as No. 300 Frank S. Ross. A rare plate.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) a golden Triwizard tournament egg with pewter Chinese Fireball dragon, promotional competition prize from Warner Brothers to mark the launch of the film, complete with matching purple velvet effect pouch, the egg approximately 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches overall. (3).This a rare promotional item created for the movie and given out at a private screening in London in 2005. It was never sold in stores or available to buy online. There were four different eggs, each containing a dragon. The four dragons featured in the film. This egg contains the Chinese Fireball Dragon as a small pewter piece measuring approx 4cm long inside 2 halves of the egg which is held together with a magnet. The egg comes inside a purple velvet display bag with golden tassel fastening. The four dragons featured in the film and that were created for these collectible eggs are: the Common Welsh Green Dragon; the Hungarian Horntail Golden Dragon; the Swedish Short-Snout Dragon, and the Chinese Fireball Dragon.

Arabic printing in Malta.- Shidyaq (Ahmad Faris al) [Historical Sections from the Old Testament with Various Meditations], vignette title, ink manuscript notes to pastedown, some light spotting and staining at beginning and end, otherwise generally clean, hinges weak, contemporary cloth, faded with some staining, joints split, small loss to spine, 8vo, Malta, [Arabic Press of the Church Missionary Society], 1833.⁂ A rare early publication of the Arabic Press in Malta, which operated between 1825 and 1842. Shidyaq, a Maronite lexicographer, journalist and a poet, worked as a translator and editor at the press from the early 1830s.

Containing the choicest receipts in all the several branches of cookery, third edition, 40 engraved bills of fare, most folding, final advertisement f., a couple of folding plates little frayed (without loss), water-stained, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary speckled calf, gilt, sympathetically rebacked, corners repaired, some water-staining, rubbed, [Bitting p.271 (note) ; Maclean p.88; Oxford pp.52-53 (note) ; Simon BG 939], 8vo, Printed for E. and R. Nutt; and H. Lintot, at the Cross Keys, against St. Dunstan's Church in Fleet-Street, 1731.⁂ The rare reissue of the third edition (1726) with a new title page. Lamb was the most celebrated of the court-cooks of the seventeenth century and served five monarchs from Charles II to Queen Anne.

Methodism.- [Gibson (Edmund, Bishop of London)] Observations upon the conduct and behaviour of a certain sect, usually distinguished by the name of Methodists, first edition, title in half-title form, woodcut head-piece and decorative initial, title stained and repaired, without loss of text, A4 inner gutter strengthened, a few marginal repairs, some spotting or staining, lightly browned, modern half brown morocco, spine gilt, 4to, [?London], no printer, [c.1740].⁂ Rare in commerce. Gibson was an active opponent of dissenters of any sort, and in the late 1730s turned his attention to what he saw as a new threats to the established church in the rise of Methodism and the Moravians.

Murder.- Matchless villany [sic]: or, a full and authentic narrative of the robbery and murder of John Penny, Esq; in a letter from a gentleman in London, to his friend in Hampshire, first edition, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initial, price at foot of title altered by hand from 6d. to 1s. 6d, some spotting and staining, lightly browned, modern half calf over 19th century marbled boards, red morocco label to spine, 8vo, Printed for J. Huggonson, 1741.⁂ Rare. John Penny had chambers in Clement's Inn, and was murdered by his servant John Hall, who lived with him there. Hall got himself into financial difficulties, and resolved to kill Penny in order to steal from him. Having removed his clothes in order to avoid detection Hall struck Penny with a stick and then cut his throat. He then hid the body in a cesspit. A few days later he went to Penny's nephew, Mr. Wooton, on pretence of enquiring after his master. So persistent was Hall with his enquiries, returning to Wooton's house several times, that Wooton became suspicious, and had Hall arrested. He was hanged in September 1741 and his body afterwards hung on chains on a highway in Shepherd's Bush. A print at the British Museum shows a naked Hall trying to drain Penny's blood into a chamber pot.

Cooper at the Globe in Pater-Noster-Row, 1744.⁂ Rare in commerce. Cowley was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich between 1761 and 1773, and was appointed Cartographer Royal to George II. The chart of the Mediterranean here was available separately at the price of sixpence. The work was printed for the publisher and bookseller Mary Cooper.

Cooper in Pater-noster-Row, 1744.⁂ Translated from the 1704 edition of Traité de la preuve par comparaison d'écritures, with a 20-page preface added by the translator. 'The French lawyer, to whom we owe the following treatise, wrote it to assert the natural rights of mankind, and to oppose some attempts made in favour of a practice, which if once established, would have afforded corrupt Ministers an handle to pervert justice, and oppress innocents at their pleasure.' (translator's preface).

A proposal for the establishment of a company owned by its subscribers, thereby ensuring a reliable source of coal at lower prices. As per ESTC text begins on B2 with a drop-head title 'To the considerate public'.

To be performed at the opening of the organ in the parish church, Wakefield, title with small woodcut ornament, woodcut headpieces, [Wakefield], no printer, 1767, together 2 works in 1 vol., corners creased, staining and soiling, contemporary drab wrappers, hole to upper wrapper, creased, soiled, 8vo⁂ Both exceedingly rare, with only one copy of each located (York Minster (part of University of York catalogue)).

Northern earthquake.- Porteus (Beilby, Bishop of Chester) A Letter to the inhabitants of Manchester, Macclesfield, and the adjacent parts, on occasion of the late earthquake in those places, first edition, foxed, lightly browned, contemporary wrappers, foxed, 12mo, Chester, Printed by J. Poole, Foregate-Street, [1777].⁂ A rare little work. The earthquake is estimated to have reached 4.4 on the Richter scale, and was widely felt in Manchester, Macclesfield, Preston, Wigan, and Stockport. There was no loss of life and only minor structural damage. Provenance: Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (couple of small marginal ink stamps).

Trial.- Australiana.- Barrington (George) The Genuine life and trial of George Barrington, from his birth, in June 1755, to the time of his conviction at the Old-Bailey, in September, 1790, for robbing Henry Hare Townsend, Esq. of his gold Watch, Seals, &c., wood-engraved frontispiece, trimmed at outer margin, affecting some text, but without loss of sense, final f. lower margin cut away, some spotting and staining, including frontispiece, where stain has caused a very small hole, disbound, 8vo, Printed for Robert Barker, November, 1790.⁂ Rare, as with most printings of this account. Barrington was a notorious pickpocket, who was several times tried and imprisoned for various daring offences. Something of a celebrity, he was transported to Botany Bay in 1790, where he so impressed the governor that in 1792 he was granted the first ever warrant of emancipation. Within a few years he became chief constable at Parramatta, a post which he held for several years. He died in 1804.

Addressed to the governors, first edition, half-title (bound after title), occasional spotting, lightly browned, modern blue wrappers, Printed at the Philanthropic Reform, St. George's Fields, for R. Bickerstaff, 1798; and 3 others, 18th & early 19th century works on the same, 8vo (5)⁂ A very good group of works on this former residence of Henry VIII, which later became a hospital, prison and workhouse. It stood in Bridge Street on the banks of the River Fleet in the City of London. In 1700 it became the first prison to appoint a doctor. The name Bridewell was adopted by other prisons, and often refers to a city's main prison, usually close to a court.

The novel was published simultaneously in Birmingham and London; copies with the Birmingham imprint being extremely rare.

Cadell Jun. and W. Davies [Vol.3 Printed for J. Ginger], 1801-1804.⁂ Rare set of this window on to the scientific and artistic worlds of the dawning of the 19th century. Garnett was a chemist and physician, having graduated from the University of Edinburgh, where he attended Joseph Black's lectures on chemistry. He was appointed president of both the Royal Physical Society and the Natural History Society. Includes mineralogy, antiquities, medicine, poetry, and obituaries of notables. William Pitt.- Armstrong (Francis) The Triumph of Pitt, An Irregular Ode; Respectfully dedicated to the Friends of his Immortal Memory, The Members of the Pitt Club, first edition, bifolium, drophead title, 4pp., a few autograph corrections and insertions by the author, folds, some foxing and staining, with 3 additional manuscript stanzas in Armstrong's hand on another sheet, C. Collins, [c.1811]; and an autograph manuscript poem by Armstrong, Iberia War Song, 3pp., July 1808, both manuscripts laid down, folds, slightly browned, folio (3 pieces). ⁂ The first mentioned is rare, with only a Chapel Hill, NC, copy recorded by WorldCat. A poem on the virtues and achievements of William Pitt who died in 1806. At the end of this poem is a prospectus for an engraving made from a painting by Armstrong 'in commemoration of the Jubilee, Oct. 25, 1809.'. A note to say that the print will be published on the 25th October, 1811 has been crossed though, and amended with the manuscript note 'as soon as possible' in Armstrong's hand.

Bookseller's catalogue.- Spanish & Portuguese books.- Salvá (Vincent) A Catalogue of Spanish and Portuguese books, with occasional literary and bibliographical remarks, 2 parts in 2 vol., some spotting, part 1 original drab boards, original printed label to spine, a few small stains, part 2 modern similar drab boards, both rubbed and little marked, 8vo, M. Calero, Spanish printer, 1826 & 1829.⁂ Rare in commerce. 'probably the first catalogue of a copious and select Spanish library ever published in England.' (Salvá's preface). Complaining of the lack of Spanish bibliography, he says that rather than confine himself to observations on the rarity of the books, or 'the peculiarities of the edition', he has endeavoured to 'discover and correct' errors of previous Spanish historians of the book.

Yorkshire ballooning.- Brown (C.H.) A Letter to a Friend, descriptive of two excursions, with Mr. Coxwell's Balloon, which ascended from the Leeds Royal Gardens March 24th, and 25th, 1856, original light brown pictorial wrappers, chip to top corner of upper cover, lightly stained and creased, 12mo, Leeds, H. Buckley, 1856.⁂ Rare, with only a BL copy traced. Henry Tracey Coxwell (1819-1900), balloonist and surgeon-dentist. In 1845 he founded and edited the first periodical devoted to ballooning, The Balloon, or, Aerostatic Magazine, of which about twelve numbers appeared.
