A rare and attractive Maori reed skirt, the reeds sewn onto a plaited raffia waist band, each hollow reed stem notched and the outer hard layer partly removed to reveal the dark brown string like interior, thus giving the skirt both a greater visual appeal and greater pliability. New Zealand, probably 19th century, length approx 22in. 56cm., width approx. 37in. 94cm. The skirt is extremely fragile and delicate, several of the reed stems having come loose; these are preserved with the skirt for possible restoration but it is likely that the original complement of stems is not now complete.
Fragmented Kurdish `eye-dazzler` ghileem, north west Persia about 1900 11ft.8in. x 3ft.6in. 3.55m. x 1.07m. Reduced in length by cut across lower end with original lower end rejoined, small loss to left edge, small reweaves and repairs in places. Despite its fragmented condition, this remains a handsome example of a now quite rare type.
Good Kurdish ghileem, north west Persia late 19th century, 15ft.3in. x 5ft. 4.64m. x 1.53m. Uneven corrosion to the dark brown bands, heavy in the central area, slight damage to the sides in places. An impressive ghileem with a rare design seldom encountered in the literature; the superb wool has acquired a beautiful patina which complements the rich and vibrant palette. An exceptional example of its kind.

A rare early painted Tunbridge ware cottage needlecase of cylinder form, line painted, the screw top in the form of a circular cottage, 6cm. * Although this type of needlecase is normally found as a fitting for a sewing clamp, this example shows no marks below the cottage associated with clamp examples. See illustration inside front cover
A rare James Fenton silver bicycle thimble, the bicycle with broad undotted tyres amid leafy flowers and with a bird, Birmingham, 1886, maker’s mark J.F., 2.3cm, apparently with its original blue cardboard box. * The thimble appears to have been little if at all used, although there is a single hole to the apex, suggesting that this may be a casting fault rather then wear. See illustration plate 8
