Lot 671

An interesting and rare 19th century iron/steel whaling harpoon marked 'Harmony 1821' and R. Black G. to the head, 118.5 cm long. The brig harmony is recorded as sailing from Barra in 1821 with 350 Scottish settlers bound for Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Provenance: Collected by Sir James Wordie, C.B.E., Chairman of the Scott Polar Research Institute, 1937-1955, and thence by direct family descent to the present owner. Possibly acquired by Wordie when he served as geologist on the Endurance during the 1914-15 Expedition to Antarctica with Ernest Shackleton. James Wordie was photographed with Third Officer Alfred Cheetham and Ship's Surgeon Alexander Macklin, washing the gallery floor of the Endurance; this photograph is illustrated on page 321 of the Royal Geographical Society Book of Explorers (ISBN 978-1-4053-9353-9). See also the photograph of Wordie's safe arrival on Elephant Island, where Wordie stands between Thomas Orde Lees and Robert Clark in the group with Shackleton (see page 328 of Michael Smith's biography, Shackleton/By Endurance We Conquer/ISBN 978-1-78074-572-5). According to Michael Smith (op.cit. above, refers), the Endurance left Buenos Aires on 26th October, 1914, arriving in King Edward Cove, South Georgia on 5th November. The large island here, between 54 and 55 degrees South, provided Endurance with a home for the next month whilst Shackleton re-provisioned his vessel. Perhaps it was at this moment that Wordie acquired the harpoon from one of the seven whaling stations, located across South Georgia's northern coast. We cannot be certain, however. Whatever the case, the whalers appear to have reported to Shackleton that the pack ice on the Weddell Sea would make a crossing both slow and dangerous. Endurance duly entered the ice on December 7th. By January 19th, 1915, Endurance was firmly entombed by the ice at 76 Degrees south, 1500 miles from the nearest assistance, back at South Georgia. Endurance was to drift randomly, reaching nearly 77 degrees on 22nd February; she was not to escape the ice. Shackleton and his men abandoned the Endurance on October 27th; they were now stranded on ice 10 feet thick with 1876 fathoms of freezing water beneath them. Although a march across the ice in the direction of Paulet Island proved impossible, the party were finally able to launch their lifeboats on 9th April, six months after Endurance had been lost. Shackleton's safe arrival on Elephant Island, and his subsequent journey to South Georgia has become the great Epic of Antarctic travel. On his third attempt, Shackleton finally rescued his 22 companions who had been left on Elephant Island. Wordie, thus, came home safely, doubtless agreeing with Sir Raymond Priestleys's summary that: '...when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems to be no way out, get on your knees and pray for Shackleton'. Condition Report Damage includes areas of loss, rust, and metal deterioration or fatigue

BURNS STEPHEN: (1921-1943) British Flight Sergeant, Rear Gunner of Lancaster ED936/G AJ-H of 617 Squadron on the Dambusters Raid, 16th May 1943. Rare ink signature, service number and rank ('1217692 Sgt Burns') on an oblong 12mo piece torn from the head of an A.L.S. [to his mother], the signature being part of Burns' address and with the blue printed emblem of the Royal Air Force at the head. Four lines of holograph text appear to the verso, stating '….happens to me see he gets it the registered number is Raleigh 554 remember this as otherwize (sic) it might get…'. Autographs of Burns are rare in any form due to his tragically early death at the age of 22 when he was killed in action on 20th December 1943 as a result of the aircraft, on which he was Rear Gunner, and being piloted by Geoffrey Rice, was shot down above Merbes-Le Chateau in Belgium. Some light age wear, G The holograph text to the verso of the present fragment evidently refers to Burns' bicycle which he kept with him whilst stationed at RAF Scampton. Indeed, it is mentioned in his RAF will (a copy of which is included in the present lot) and it was evidently his wish that the bicycle be given to his brother (undoubtedly his younger brother, Freddie, to whom he had also earlier given his flying gauntlets and other keepsakes).

The history file contains a BMID certificate stating that the Land Rover had a build date of 30th October 1957 and was despatched on the 1st November 1957 to Rossleigh Limited, Edinburgh, Scotland (the supplying dealer). The Land Rover is now only for sale due the vendor needing the space so he can concentrate on his next restoration project a 1949 Land Rover Series I. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustrations

Ray Bolger signed 10x8 movie still from Where's Charley. Rare autograph of the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz. Ray Bolger began his career in vaudeville. He was half of a team called "Sanford and Bolger" and also did numerous Broadway shows on his own. He, like Gene Kelly, was a song-and-dance man as well as an actor. He was signed to a contract with MGM in 1936 and his first role was as himself in The Great Ziegfeld (1936). This was soon followed by a role opposite Eleanor Powell in Rosalie (1937). His first dancing and singing role was in Sweethearts (1938), where he did the "wooden shoes" number with red-headed soprano/actress Jeanette MacDonald. This got him noticed by MGM producers and resulted in his being cast in his most famous role, that of the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Surprisingly, even though the film was a success, Bolger's contract with MGM ended. He went to RKO to make Four Jacks and a Jill (1942). After this, Bolger went to Broadway, where he received his greatest satisfaction. In 1953 he turned to television and got his own sitcom, "Where's Raymond?" (1953), later changed to "The Ray Bolger Show". After his series ended, Bolger made frequent guest appearances on TV and had some small roles in movies. In 1985 he co-hosted That's Dancing! (1985) with Liza Minnelli. Bolger died in 1987 at the age of 83. Good condition. All signed items come with Certificate of Authenticity. Can be shipped worldwide.
