Lot 113

Robert Race, b. 1943, Scottish Dancer, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted wood, driftwood, wire, cotton, feather, approx. 25.5cm high excluding feather, 39cm wide, 14cm deep; together with another by the same artist, The Pirate Skipper, a hand-operated automaton, painted wood, driftwood, wire, cord, painted The Pirate Skipper to front of base, approx. 27.5cm high, 28.5cm wide, 12cm deep (a/f) (2)Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Scottish Dancer: The kilted skeleton is an agile dancer despite being dead, his footwork very similar to frenzied Scottish dancers, and he stands after dancing in a range of poses, sometimes drooping with exhaustion, sometimes in the most elegant of poses with one foot behind the other. Robert Race is a master of animated movement. In this case the movement is created by a square cam on the drive shaft jerkily turning the top section of the dead tree so that the cotton attached to each side of the dancer jerks it into dancing. It is rare to meet such an exuberant skeleton, but then he is Scottish. The Pirate Skipper: The skipping rope rotates with the pirate’s arms and the pirate never trips. The pirate can do forward and reverse swings of the skipping rope and makes quite a clatter when his legs touch down. The parrot remains settled throughout and says nothing.Provenance: Scottish Dancer: Purchased, Robert Race, June 1993.The Pirate Skipper: Purchased, Robert Race, exhibition ‘Robert Race: Moving Toys and Automata’, Quaker Gallery, London WC2, January 1994. Note: Robert Race, b.1943, exhibits his moving toys, automata, and kinetic sculpture in Britain and internationally. He is a member and past Chairman of the British Toymakers Guild. His work often incorporates a wide range of natural, re-used, and recycled material to make objects which move in simple but interesting ways.Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.

Lot 121

Neil Hardy, Myopic Frog, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted and carved wood, plywood, wire, nylon thread, approx. 21cm high, 17.5cm wide, 12cm deep; together with three other pieces by the same artist from the Evolutionary Blunders series, comprising: Clown Penguins, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted wood, brass, wire, nylon thread, signed and dated Neil Hardy ’94 to underside, approx. 19.5cm high, 17cm wide, 9.5cm deep; Vampire Bat, a hand-operated automaton, wood, leather, wire, brass, approx. 22cm high, 15cm wide, 7cm deep; and Bat, wood, leather, wire, nylon, approx. 14cm high (4)Sir Nicholas Goodison noted:Myopic Frog: The fly hovers around, by no means static. At regular intervals the frog opens his mouth and lunges at the fly with his long tongue, before retracting it again unsuccessful. This is one of Hardy’s series of ‘Evolutionary Blunders’. Like all his movements it depends on the carefully timed motions of levers and wires. The text reads ‘The rare Myopic Frog soon became an endangered species due to its inability to focus on moving objects.’ Clown Penguins: This is one of Hardy’s ‘Evolutionary Blunders’. The right-hand penguin raises his wings, revealing some colourful plumage underneath, and his companion, the one with the down-turned beak, passes out before recovering and starting again. A ‘Pengometer, mounted below has an arrow pointing in turn to ‘Intrigue, Aprehension (sic), Horror, Coma’, the last coinciding with the left-hand penguin’s collapse. As with many of Hardy’s movements the action is controlled by a stars wheel, with kidney-shaped cam. The frame inscribed ‘Evolutionary Blunders’ and ‘The new species of Clown Penguin was short lived as his traumatised mother never layed another egg.’Vampire Bat: The ingenious use of a star wheel, its teeth collected in turn by the turning handle, opens and closes the bat’s wings and sticks his tongue out. The frame inscribed ‘Evolutionary Blunders’ and ‘Before developing fangs and branching out into movies The Vampire Bat had a hard time scaring anybody.’Bat: The bat hangs upside down by his wire feet. Pulling on the nylon thread attached to the wooden plaque weight opens and closes his wings. The plaque is inscribed ‘New ecologically friendly fly-scarer. Pull one string to open the bat wings and watch those flies run for cover.’Provenance:Myopic Frog: Purchased, Neil Hardy, Crafts Council Chelsea Crafts Fair, October 1994.Clown Penguins: Gift, 1994.Vampire Bat: Purchased, Neil Hardy, at British Toymakers’ Guild Fair, January 1994.Bat: Purchased, Frivoli, Chiswick, London, November 1995.Note: Neil Hardy worked as an architect for 13 years before becoming an automatist. His creations have been exhibited internationally, including in Japan, Australia, and Germany. His work is imbued with a sense of fun and whimsy, and he always uses animals to create amusing sculpture.Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.

There is something poignant about the limp winding handle of the grave.Three Physical Jerks: The three Anubis figures stretch their arms and legs in unison, as in a gym class. The written paper on the end reads These three lithe beings represent part of the large force of well-trimmed slaves employed by female Pharoahs (sic). Before commencing their duties, they must work up a light sweat in order to develop the full fragrance of the rare unguents with which their bodies have been anointed (sic).Provenance:Life, Love, Death: Purchased, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, London, December 2002. Exhibited: Out of the Box, Air Gallery, London, December 2002.Three Physical Jerks: Purchased, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, London, 2002. Exhibited: A Collectors Collection, Strawberry Hill, June-November 2014.Note: Paul Spooner, b.1948, went to art school and taught before becoming an automatist in his early thirties when he moved to Cornwell and met Peter Markey.Sue Jacksons shop, Cabaret, which specialised in mechanical toys, provided the perfect place for him to create and sell his humorous moving sculptures.Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
