Lithograph, 1916/1917, on thin wove, signed and dated 1917 Image 33.5 x 45.5cm. Provenance: London, The Antique Lovers' Coterie at Ingram Warwick (label on backboard, priced at £70, no date) This rare lithograph, issued in an edition of fifty but very rarely seen on the market, is amongst the first three subjects by Nevinson in this medium (the others are recorded as `Loading the Ship` and `La Villette` but the precise order of their creation is not known). This subject was exhibited at The Senefelder Club, Leicester Galleries, London in late January 1917 and a related work was shown at The Allied Artist's Association in July 1913, no.301. This rediscovery in a private collection shows the artist's facility with lithography, acquired in 1912 under the guidance of Ernest Jackson (1872-1945) at The London County Council School (off Southampton Row). Nevinson was inspired by the Futurist theories of Filippo Marinetti (1876-1944) but he disdained the Futurists' glorification of war. His concentration upon the medium declined after the early 1920s when he focused more upon drypoints and etchings (which were also more lucrative for him during the remarkable boom for subjects in that medium). Nevinson was much encouraged by the eminent American printmaker Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) in his pursuit of this medium and the subject caught the eye of Campbell Dodgson (1867-1948) who admired it for `ranking as amongst the best of recent lithographs` (`British Artists at the Front`, Country Life, 1918). The subject, which could have been so commonplace in the hands of a less inventive artist, is invested here with bold angularity of line, a sure command of depth, a fine balance of tones and a disquieting mood. "During the latter part of the War [Nevinson's] most powerful statements in black and white were in lithography [...]. The rare works [...] recall the early prints in his Cubist manner." (Gordon Cooke, "C.R.W. Nevinson As a Printmaker," in C.R.W. Nevinson: The Twentieth Century, ed. Richard Ingleby et al. (London, 1999)). *CR The full sheet; mat-staining and light-staining; repaired tear at very edge of image upper right corner; repaired tear in margin at left; repaired tear upper centre extending slightly into image; smaller tear within top margin; surface nicks and light grazes towards right of image;.
