Ω AN ITALIAN SCULPTED TRAVERTINE MARBLE GROUP, THE ABDUCTION OF PROSERPINA LATE 20TH CENTURY, AFTER GIAN LORENZO BERNINI (1598-1680) The demi-god held aloft in the arms of Pluto, with Cerberus crouched at his feet 205cm high On a rectangular section travertine base, 50cm high, 83cm wide, 77.5cm deep Overall height 304cm Ω UK import VAT at the standard rate (currently 20%) As with many of Bernini's early works, the original was commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, and executed between 1621 and 1622. Bernini was only 23 years old at its completion. Soon after its completion the statue was given by Scipione to Cardinal Ludovisi, who transported it to the Villa Ludovisi. After later having been purchased by the Italian State, the work was returned to the Villa Borghese in 1908Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions, various chips and losses, signs of filled and plugged repairs utilising donor stone as well as composition and resin. This is notably but not exhaustively to the right arm, her stomach, left knee, areas of the back of the model. Band is slightly misshapen and some thinning to the back of band. Stones are bright and catch the light very well. No appearance of yellowing to stones, no chips or cracks to the stones.
