AMENDMENT TO CATALOGUE A pair of oils on board by William Havell (1782-1857) Both signed W.Havell and dated 1822. The reverse of both boards has the names J E Godolphin & R Godolphin indistinctly penciled. 35.5 x 22.8cm. William Havell came from a well-known Reading family of artists and engravers. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1804 and at the British Institution from 1806. He was one of the first members of the Water colour Society. In 1816 he accompanied Lord Amherst's mission to China on board 'The Alceste' as artist to the expedition. The venture was not a success for Havell and in 1817 he sailed for India. He spent nine years in India painting portraits before returning to England in 1826 after a bout of cholera. The first painting shows a young uniformed staff officer of the Honourable East India Company. He is resplendent in his double breasted scarlet tunic with dark blue facings and gold braided epaulettes. His dress sword is casually looped under his arm and he holds a bicorn hat with a red and white plume in his right hand. He stands in front of a large stone column. The background shows a palm tree, a ships mast and a large white colonial building. Note: This portrait is very similar to another portrait of Havell's in the British Library's East India Company archive, showing General Sir John Withington Adams in India. The second portrait shows a finely dressed young lady (possibly the officer's wife) in a lush garden of holly-hocks, a minaretted Indian tower in the distance. She is billowing in a confection of directoire style, embroidered white muslin, decorated with pink silk ribbons
