An English delft Plate, c.1700, possibly Bristol, painted in blue yellow and manganese with a warrior on horseback, a quiver by his leg, cracks and chips, 26.5cm. For a similar plate, see Britton, Frank, English Delftware in the Bristol Collection, 1982, p.300, no. 19.29 where he describes it as extraordinary. This lead glazed back piece is rather better painted than the Stone Hodges piece illustrated.
Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) ILES FARM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Oil on canvas 76.5 x 101.5cm. Provenance: The estate of the artist; thence by descent. Rothenstein bought Iles Farm in 1912, along with fifty-five acres of land at Far Oakridge, near Stroud, overlooking the Golden Valley. He renovated it and settled there, keeping a house in the area until his death. He produced many pictures of the farm and neighbouring villages and wrote, "Stone buildings always move me - austere in grey weather, pale, livid even, against a stormy sky, they are warm and sparkling in the sunlight".
